    As a Sabres fan he was my favorite player. That 76 goal season was incredible. LaFontaine at center, Mogilny at wing, Hawerchuk is your number two center. Oh man, those were the days.
    He scored on his first shift in his first game. He risked his life to play in the NHL. Every Russian who plays in the league now, owe him some gratitude.
    Moving to Buffalo is definitely some culture shock. As much as I love my home town, I can't imagine doing what he did.
    Funny thing was, he could absolutely fly but he wasn't good at breakaways. He'd get a ton of em, but the tried and true old school Russian way of handling breakaways (always go five hole with a backhander after you make the goalie move across the crease) didn't work well for him. Shooting and passing though, wow.
    Absolutely criminal that he isn't in the NHL's hall of fame.

    I honestly thought he was in not gonna lie. The Bure and Neely thing being that reason. For my money he's the best pure talent I've seen play with a leaf on his chest and he was on one leg at the time too (we'll see given the kids if he holds on to that honor when it's all said and done) 02-03 he broke Mats run on being the team leader in points (kurt angle voice) again on one freaking leg
    Love these

  • @taekwondotime
    @taekwondotime Před 5 lety +4

    I followed him throughout his career. One of my favourite players. The guy was a mixture of Bure and Fedorov. He was a better passer than Bure, and he had a more accurate shot than Bure. He simply chose not to shoot as much later on in his career. I think most people regard Bure as the more electrifying sniper, however, Mogilny had a higher peak. At his very best, he was better than Bure. Injuries played a major toll on him. Since he was the first Russian superstar player to defect, I think that alone warrants HOF consideration. Mogilny paved the way for the Ovechkin's of today.
    If you look at some of their seasons, Bure would have 400+ SOG in the seasons where he scored 50+ goals. Mogilny typically had seasons with around 200 SOG. He would be netting 35 goals (or whatever the figure was in his later years) and his shot total would be miniscule. It's also worth mentioning that Mogilny never played for a good team until he got to New Jersey. Fedorov was fortunate to land in Detroit and be part of that dynasty which no doubt helps his HOF value.

    Its a countrymen question.. Mogilny did more for russian hockey than any other player, he played with insane agility/speed yet still had the touch and made hockey fun to watch in buffalo where to be honest thats a rarity. Had he started his career in Toronto and those same seasons theres no question he'd be in.

    Loved Alex so much. Being from Toronto and a Leaf fan i knew he was nearing the end but i absolutely loved the guy. That was the era where the Leafs got all the legends that were past their prime which was annoying. But at least we got 2 good years out of him and yes he should have been a first ballod HOFer. Just for the fact that he was the first to defect from the Red Army. He changed the game. Federov came right after.

    Mogilny was my childhood idol growing up in Buffalo and how he is not in the HOF is beyond any NHL fans belief. The risks this guy and some of the Buffalo Sabres staff took just to get him here to the US speaks highly of itself. It pains me that he won a Stanley Cup elsewhere and he wore a Leafs jersey at one point but even Toronto loved him and he had an amazing career there as well. The NHL needs to get there shit together because this guy was one of the best I’ve seen in person at the good ole Aud downtown Buffalo. Wow your channel is not only awesome but just talking about Alexander the Great brings back so many memories..

  • @zenonelealainen3750
    @zenonelealainen3750 Před 4 lety +1

    Of my understanding the case with Mogilny being sent to AHL by the Devils in 05-06 was about the salary cap. You see the Devils would have had Patrik Elias - Scott Gomez - Brian Gionta as their top line otherwise, but Elias got ill of hepatitis before the season and was unable to play. At that time it seemed that Elias could miss the entire season, so the Devils added Alexander Mogilny as a replacement for Elias. Mogilny was placed in the second line of the team and he did farely well. At the time Mogilny had recovered from a hip surgery.
    But then something unexpected happened: Elias recovered from the illness sooner than expected and came back to the lineup. The only problem at this point was that there wasn't enough room in the salary cap for Elias to play unless someone highly enough payed player was removed from the lineup. At this situation they decided to sent Alexander Mogilny to the AHL to make room for Elias in the Salary cap.
    While Mogilny was in the AHL, he started to have some problems with his hip again. After the season it was rumoured that the Devils would trade Mogilny to the Washington Capitals, but that didn't take place. Caps didn't really needed another sniper as they already had Ovechkin and Semin was coming in. Mogilny wouldn't spent a full season in the AHL and the Devils wouldn't get him traded and therefore he did not dress up during 06-07. Then he retired.

    8:36 "He agrees to go to the Albany River Rats. That I respect him for."
    Weird, I just heard Adrian Aucoin (I think it was an audio-only Spittin Chiclets podcast) where he said the first thing Mogilny did was go to that team's coach and ask him, "Coach, what's the fine for missing practice?"
    Coach: "I don't know... $250?"
    The next game, he comes with a cheque for $250 for every practice the rest of the year so he didn't have to show up.
    I wonder if he was willing to go to the minor leagues only because he would still get his full NHL contract money. Adrian Aucoin said he loved life.

    Yeah, agreed--the HOF should honor 'contributors to the game' and he qualifies, this was a defection, his family could have been harmed. Such talent, always hovering toward that 1.0 pt/GM. Some of the H OF arguments could be avoided if the H OF were more inclusive. Not many players get 1,000 points or avg pt/gm. Finishing w the Albany River Rats does it for me, class act fulfilling his contract and just playing hockey. He might have had a better career, but that highlights GMs and organizations- Bure and Mogilny are a dynamic duo. Cup contenders with goaltending and a solid third line. [I say that even knowing that I could not be a hockey GM, very tough job gettinfg that 'solid third line' (easy to say though(!] Nothing wrong with preserving their memories as part of the history of hockey.

    Mogilny is slightly before my time, but it's quite obvious he is criminally underrated and/or not talked about nearly enough.
    I have a nack for bold statements, but I feel he's the best Russian player of all time, while playing a good chunk of his career hurt. It's simple, look at his highlights, when he turned it on he was unstoppable-UNSTOPPABLE.
    The NHL needs to recognize this player and treat him better for what he went through to start playing Hockey in North America. He's a Hall Of Famer not currently in the Hall.

    Have you ever watched the movie "The Red Army"? Personnally I don't think it is a masterpiece, but I really like the story, it just needs a different format to be told... history of the Soviets in the NHL? Would you need a book for that?
    If I could - I'd make an anime out of it, Fetisov and the other 4 could have some cute talk in the locker room about how they only see their wives a few times a year, but that they still have each other.... and I'd love to see the scene when Fetisov goes back to his first coach and guru Tarasov after the Moscow team fired him :) That could start off season 3 or 4 or something...
    ok so I figurred it out... XD
    season 1 Tarasov invents Russian hockey - struggles for the Russian 5 (6 with Tretjak) to make the Moscow team, 72 summit series, 74 Tarasov gets fired, Tikhonov emerges as the bad guy coach
    season 2 1980 they lose to the US team, years of terror and success under Tikonov - the boys have troubles with the harsh system
    season 3 some russians defect, the pressure gets higher, Tikonov makes money offers to Fetisov, betrays him, Fetisov refuses to play for Moscow, will the friendship amongst the players hold when the system collapses?
    season 4 Fetisow is alone somewhere in Russia training with Tarasov all his friends are in the NHL already, then he goes over, but he ends up miserable, playing with his former best friend Kasatonov, but their friendship has cooled off because of the defection things, happy end when Fetisow gets traded to the Wings and they win a cup

    Mogilny was so good the Sabres traded Pierre Turgeon and Benoit Hogue for a guy fast enough to skate with him. That might be short-selling (just a little, right?) how good Pat LaFontaine was, especially 91-93, and also with how well Turgeon and Hogue played for the Isles… but I don’t think that trade ever happens without having someone as explosive as 89 driving the reasons why.

      Why? He inducts people who are almost Hall of Fame worthy or who he thinks should be in the Hall of Fame that aren't in yet. Whitney is THG HOF worthy, and Kozlov is almost there, but Gelinas is not even close haha he was mediocre at best

      Steve Ott Gelinas scored some big goals in his career. Mr. Eliminator. Pretty sure THG hinted at Gelinas going into the THG HOF in the future.

      A few big goals and one that got disallowed doesn't suddenly make someone with 600 points in 1300 games a hall of famer

    Mad respect for Mogilny. There's a video on youtube in documentary style about him defecting out of Russia. It was damn scary. He put up really good numbers. The only knock on the guy was his skating (which was why everyone complained about his compete level). The dip in production you see from 1996 is around when the dead puck era kicked in. Imagine playing against every team that plays the trap...neutral zone was bigger back then so it was way harder to gain the blue line. If you dump the puck in, there was no trapezoid that would prevent the goalie from just clearing it back out. Guys could use their stick to hook you from behind with literally no space to skate. AND to add on top of that.... Mogilny was playing on a Canucks team that had no scoring depth.

      Tonghale “THG Hall of Fame”. Not the real Hockey Hall of Fame. Shannon inducts players into his HOF who aren’t in the real one, but had notable careers and that he really liked and/or fit his criteria.

    As a Sabres fan, I feel lucky to have been cheering Alexander the Greatest on during those unbelieveable early years. Yet in his final year he had a ton of breakaways and missed almost all of them. In the past, he scored on almost all of them. I felt that he was missing on purpose and saw the handwriting on the wall that he was trying to force his way out. He did andPeca was a good return but not enough to push us to win the cup in '99.

      Steve Ott Him being Russian should be even MORE of a reason to put him in the hall though, even just as a builder. He was a pioneer for young Russians defecting over, and even though the iron curtain fell a couple years after he came over, who knows when we would've seen Bure or Fedorov or Hasek come over had he not paved the path?

    • @steveott9962
      @steveott9962 Před 5 lety +3

      Mogilny isn't going to get in as a builder lol. Defecting didn't make his career stats any better, and will not help him make the HOF. If he gets in the HOF it will be for his 1032 points in 990 games, not his defecting
