Captain Alfredsson Spezza Heatley C.A.S.H.
I remember in the 05-06 Eastern Semifinals series vs. Buffalo. Ottawa was on a power-play in overtime in Game 5 with Alfredsson playing the point. Jason Pominville of the then high-flying Sabres took the puck around 'Alfie' and stuffed a shorthanded goal in behind goaltender Ray Emery and Buffalo went on to win that series 4-1. The following spring, in the Eastern Conference Finals, the two rivals hooked up again, this time with Alfredsson playing the hero by scoring the GWG in overtime at Buffalo also in Game 5 to send Ottawa to the Cup Finals. I thought that was cool that he witnessed his team's demise one year and sent his team to the Stanley Cup Finals the next.
I think the Sabres would have won the Cup, but, the injury bug was just cruel.
It was the 2006-07 eastern semifinals. 05-06 was Carolina vs Buffalo.

I can remember him and Jason Spezza ruining my childhood as leafs fan in the mid 2000s. I know we tended to beat them in the playoffs but i can remember being in attendance for some 8-0, 8-2 beatdowns at the hands of those sens.
I remember being so distraught after one game that i wrote a letter and sent it to the leafs head office ( i was like 7 years old).
I got their address from the back of a book about NHL goalies written by Paul Romanuk that i stole from my school library.
I roasted them. Told them all my friends were becoming sens fans and that they were hot garbage.
Two weeks later I got a package full of free leafs nick-nacks (Mini Stanley Cup, Calendar, coasters) addressed from MLSE head office.
They bought themselves a fan for life that day.
Alfie definitely deserved a cup and deserves a hall of fame entry. lol I forgive him now just like i do Jason Spezza.
As a Sabres fan who loved the Buffalo/Ottawa rivalry in the mid 2000s, my feelings toward Alfredsson is akin to Anchorman: "I pure straight hate you..... but god*****it do I respect you."
I have to say, I don't see many people with the same spelling of Donaghue as me.... The fact that you respect Alfie tells me it's genuine :)

Daniel should be a hall of gamer based on his above average consistent output, his leadership longevity, and him being a great example of what kind of player kids should aspire to be on and off the ice.

Good god no.
Maybe the logo could be fixed, but these were beautiful jerseys. Also, somehow, the only Sens' jersey to ever feature gold details on it, which is weird considering how there's so much gold on both iterations of their main logo!

Thank you for doing this. Alfie is the reason why I starting watching hockey and learned how hockey works. He also wears my favourite number and I was born on the 11th of February.

I've missed his best years but even while I had so small hockey knowledge at this time I knew this player was special. I hope he'll be in HOF
I remember meeting him at a Starbucks a few years after he retired. He has definitely packed on a few pounds lol. I was also at the first game he returned to Ottawa as a Red Wing. He got a mixed reception. Also scored an empty net goal that game.

I miss having that feeling going into every game back during the Pizza Line days that we literally had the tools/chance to win every game. These days, it's the opposite, I worry every game is a potential loss.
Minus the Scooby Doo eyes, that jersey is honestly gorgeous. Should’ve been the base for Ottawa’s new ones imo
Daniel always stood in the shadows of swedish superstars like forsberg, sundin and lidström. Never really got the recognition in Sweden that he deserved but always highly respected as a leader and overall great guy on and off the ice.
The 100 points in 124 playoff games is impressive.
I think as well, that a big part of why I would put Alfie in the HoF is his work off the ice, being the face of the team for so long, and how much he meant to the city. A lot of players might have better stats, or more hardware, but don't have nearly the love this guy has in the city where he played. I think that counts for something.
If Sundin got in, so should Alfredsson. Mats Sundin won no individual awards, he didn't even get the a Cup final in his career, never mind as a captain.

I remember seeing Mark stone play and the knock was his skating so he was draft like 5th round but then saw him play at the world juniors and win bronze and the take away ability my God I thought he was our future.
I like to remember the line as, "the Pizza Line"
What was it? Ottawa won and scored 5 or 6 goals at home and you could get a free slice of pizza from Pizza Pizza the next day with your ticket.

To be fair on the Mark Stone point, he was recognized nationally in Vegas but his production wasn’t really any better. Chara was a sweetener to the Yashin trade, and suddenly turned into a beast in Ottawa. Boston made him a star, sure, but he became what he became in Ottawa.

Alfredsson was my swedish player in the nhl growing up, all games during the night so never rly saw any games, but we would get highlights, and man every single week it felt like he had a sick slapper of the bar and in
Alfredsson was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022.
This guy was a great player, no doubt about it. It's a shame he is not in the hall of fame.
One of my favorite of all time. Class on and off the ice. I remember listening to the radio on July 1st and hearing he signed with the Wings... I was sure it was a joke. I feel he should be in the hall. Guess time will tell

What happened to Alfredsson in 06-07 is exactly why someone like Guy Charbonneau would never win a Selke in today's NHL. One of the greatest defensive forwards of all time and probably the best I've seen live, that Bergeron guy included, wouldn't win anything because he didn't put up enough points. So is it an award for the best 2-way forward? Because that's a little different than best defensive forward. A 2 way forward doesn't have to be as air tight defensively as someone like Charbonneau was, because, like Bergeron, they can make up for whatever, albeit rare, defensive errors by getting it back offensively. That wasn't necessarily an option for Guy.
Yeah, I miss the good old days when the Norris wasn't the Art Ross for defensemen.

And you can’t mention Alfie without that slapper after the buzzer in the SCF. Love the guy, still HOF material, but the whole series changed in that moment. CASH was one thing but the five-goal promotion at pizza pizza giving a free slice to ticket holders made sure we all called it the PIZZA line!

If any of the old Sens players deserves a number retired it is number 25. Chris Neil was the true heart and soul of the team. Had a better contact offer from the NYR and turned it down to stay in Ottawa. Rarely lost a fight even though he was smaller than most fighters and would always stick up for a teammate. And how can anyone forget that the NYR were all over the Sens in 2018 until big brother Neil came in and stuck it to the Rangers and handed their asses on a silver platter. After Neil, it’s a huge drop off but Fisher would be next. Spezza after that and followed by Patrick Lalime. I know he had his issues with some soft goals against the Leafs, especially in game 7 but man that guy was an amazing goaltender against all other teams in the playoffs…especially against the Philadelphia Flyers back to back years.

@Dave White In 3 of those 4 years I believe it was the Leafs who had home ice advantage versus the Sens in the playoffs, i.e., they finished higher up in the standings than the Sens during the year. Is that not right?

I wish he would have had more success with the Wings. I mean stats-wise he was ok that one year but that team had a lot of injuries and never really felt complete.
Alfredsson gave Buffalo a LOT of headaches in the early 2000s. Amazing player, and one of the better human beings on that team. Heaven knows it’s no horse race if you throw in people like Heatley and Neal.

As a lifelong Sens fan, I'm not objective about Alfredsson.
But in my view, he is a little like Derek Jeter. A very good but not excellent talent who through sheer work and passion became a franchise player on a perennial playoff team. A very reliable two-way player and leader.

I always thought it was odd how the wings scouts got a guy like Holmstrom in the 10th round of the 94 draft but missed out on Alf. Can you imagine how much more everyone would hate the redwings if he spent his entire career in detroit?

The Sens didn't miss the playoffs in 98-99. They finished second in the conference, but were swept by Buffalo in the first round.
A couple of what-ifs I think about: what if they had drafted Pronger or Kariya to add to Yashin and Alfredsson? What if the Yashin-for-Yzerman trade had materialized?
How about if Alexei Yashin hadn't been ruled against by an arbitrator, if there's another example of that, I'm unaware of it.
Never give it any thought. I only consider what benefit to Alfredsson having a stronger cast and for longer would have meant for him and his career numbers.

Honestly I feel they should tighten up criteria for the HOF. In my opinion it should be reserved for players who will be well known 100+ years from now. I doubt Alfredsson is one of those players. Having said that more goalies should get in.
Alfredsson when talking about the Sens will never be forgotten.
Hockey is a sport where the two leading scorers in the league can be swept in the first round of the play-offs. So I think team success while not unimportant, must be treated as a minor factor in measuring a players Hall of Fame-pedigree.

Hey if you want to get in to short videos like everybody else is doing (to please the almighty algorithm), you can do career videos of guys who only played 1 or 2 games. 15 seconds of fame videos, you can record like 52 in a single day and then schedule a release every week! A year's worth of work over a weekend! $$$
A video on guys who played only one NHL game and scored a goal in that game would be interesting. There were 3 or four players who did it.

The "underdog" Leafs were the higher seed in three of those four playoff series. It was no fluke that they won (except for the Patrick Lalime meltdown -- that felt like sinister forces were at work).
