The Hunter is definitely a tad insane, given some of the entries in the hunter's journal. However, he is also a pretty nice guy. This split in personality makes him a cool character in my eyes.

It's possible that there may be a hunter's guild in the world of Hollow Knight. The Hunter does say things that imply a collective of various hunters. The hunter's mark may also imply a guild of sorts in the world of Hollow Knight.
Outlandish theory. But do you remember The Lake of Unn, which had those large eggs in the background. Unhatched. The hunter could come from these eggs, though deformed. Maybe by void. Or maybe by Unn's weakening does his leaves wilt and deform him.
I always thought the Hunter was a descendant of the original Void kingdom. He’s clearly been to the abyss and all sorts of places he shouldn’t be able to reach, and he has a passing resemblance to the various huge corpses found throughout the game of ancient bugs.
I know I’m a little late to this comment, but I came fresh off of mossbag’s video of the iceberg, where he mentions that the Hunter specifically is the one who wrote notes about the Radiance, meaning they had to have had some sort of interaction before. If the Hunter is somehow related to Void, that might explain more about how he was able to encounter and possibly even fight the Radiance.
I think he is a weaver by the six eyes and thin body, that got called by the infeccion and gone trough all way to Greenpath. Hopefully he will get a role in Silksong.
Thats just amazing, 5 years later i can't find anything more than this anywhere, and most threads are locked already ; seeing that seemingly no one else made those connection is kinda making me doubt my logic, but here goes The hunter is the black wyrm. I would not think it is the coliseum shell though, because it would prolly mention it in a way or another if it were the case ; but the fangs on its "hood" matches those of the said shell and give me the same impression than the pale king's horns when compared to the pale wyrm's ones ; That would explain how it is so totally unaffected by the infection (though the pale king did retreat in dreamland to escape radiance, and cut content does make him say "false one you cannot reach me here", but maybe that is related to him and the mothgod being both gods of light battling for the crown). He warns the knight, upon receiving the Hunter's mark, that it will imprint on it forever and become part of him, which can reasonnably be compared to the lightgods' impact of most bugs. (and if it was part of him from the beginning that could explain the behaviour of the bugs inside of the coliseum, just saying) He also mentions siblings, and hunting each other in the nest, so I think thats not too far-fetched to imagine that later on, after whity shed its shell and tried to build a whole civilisation from beasts and "enlightened" moths, blacky poped up for another brawl. As he claims to have tried to have a companion (when talking about god tamer) but was unable to refrein from fighting it to compare strengths, so would he with his kin (maybe even his sibling ? But thats a stickman with a bush on its head ! I hear you say. And the pale wyrm is a pointy dwarf, i answer. So my thoughts are, blacky comes around, finds the (not so) everlasting kingdom of hallownest ; for some reason(s) the knights of the pale wyrm (at least) fight with him (once again, the coliseum shell seem a perfect fit for this but given the lack of any hint on its part this is for everyone to decide for themselves i guess) ; he ends up defeated because hey, savage but not enough to take down the whole of hallownest's finest, yada yada, then he sheds its shell ! After all whity did shed and reduce drastically in size, and completely changed anatomically speaking, excepted pour the crown/horns/fangs/etc ; ans who's to say the fangs on his hood aren't his ? After all there is some... I think saliva... On the items he gives to the knight. And i don't recall seeing any external eye material on whity's oldest corpse we meet ingame ; no proof by itself, but no disproof either. So methink after the battle, he started hiding in this "second shape" either to reform or just to regain strength ; as nothing/no one ever tells us that a wyrm, once transformed, can revert to their former shape, or how long it takes/how it works if even possible. TLDR : Hunter is black wyrm, sibling of pale king, and went the same kind of transformation (if only the pale king was naked ! We could see if he had limbs in his new form...) There ! To my knowledge, The Hunter is likely some kind of Assassin Bug, some of these insects in real life will camouflage their bodies with the carcasses of dead ants in a similar way to how The Hunter disguises his form with the hood of leaves.
