The U.K. Offshore Power Boat circus held an event in my home town years ago (think F1 on the water) and they all turned up towing their very expensive race boats being fancy American 4X4s. In the week that they were there one of the local farmers made a fair bit of cash towing the boats and the tow cars out of the water. The usual failure was to reverse the boat trailer down the steep slipway into the water to recover the boat leaving the tow-car with its rear wheels just in the water. They would then floor the throttle, the four wheels would spin on the aptly named ‘slip’way and the car and trailer slid downhill into the water. Chris turned up in his Series 1 Land Rover and calmly pulled them out. What was strange was that the other drivers did not seem to learn anything from the experience, they seemed to think that full power was the only way. The most interesting thing about the whole week was that Donald Campbell’s daughter was one of the competitors.

Honestly, what sort of idiot do you think I am?
Also, hydrolocked does not mean damaged.
Some of these cars being driven the way they are, there is very likely some damage and for at least one of the vehicles I watched, likely pretty severe damage.

I meant that starting without the plugs is to remove the water out of the combustion chambers, and after that, after checking the airbox, put the plugs back in and try to start it. Maybe one might be lucky. But a hydrolocked engine is almost certain pretty damaged (damaged valves, bent rods, things of that nature) so I don't think this BMW will ever run without a new or rebuilt engine. I think it will cost the owner about 10k Euro's. Price for stupidity

For anyone wondering repair costs for some: 2018 BMW 118d hydro locked and recovered via dragging not lifting is a £28,000 repair bill from BMW.
Hydro locking destroys compression components in the engine, conrods etc and dragging destroys the gearbox and diff.

    • @simontist

The gearbox / diff aren't going to be damaged by dragging it a few feet with wet tyres. However depending on the water level they are at risk of water getting inside and ruining the components.

Thanks to your videos, I now know what to expect when driving through a deeper than average puddle.
Since the extreme rain, Bristol has many roads which experience flooded roads which could so easily disable a car.
It's about time, all drivers learn the limitations of their vehicles, especially since most of us can't afford to lose our vehicles.

I did it in a transit van many moons ago, (got called out in the middle of the night - no water gauge showing the depth though). Ended up with a bent conrod. The company decided on a new engine. As you say costs ££££££. I'd always assumed on a big van the air intake would quite high. 😂 It turned out it was no higher than the top of the wheels. Needless to say, over the years, the first thing I find out on any new car I've had is where the air intake is.

CoPart is going to be full of Cat B flood damaged vehicles. I wonder how many insurance claims are refused for destroyed engines full of water.
I take it that it is the first time many of them have encountered a ford or a flood. In many cases they'd have got through albeit taking a risk if they had just gone steady.

My knowledge of car mechanics is from the 1970's so I guess I'm out of date, but why are so many cars towed with the rear wheels locked? I guess it is in transmission lock, i.e. Park, but why? Is there some sort of Artificial Stupidity in modern transmissions that says if the engine ain't running it must go into Park regardless of what the driver wants?
