Had the Kindle about a month and returned it. Tried to sit and read.. I would rather spend an hour listening to audible and get things done. Even if it’s just sewing. Inconvenient having audible on two devices. I listen to books while playing golf and would have to sync and it didn’t always work.
Zero point in a Kindle if you’re only using it for audible.

Great Review, I was Not much of a book reader before my Paperwhite, now i rread every nigh tbefore i go to sleep for about an hour. I think it was more for the convenience and the lighting, typically i read in bed with my wife sleeping so this made it really great for that, I keep my backlight on 4 and it's a perfect lighting level. Thanks for the awesome Reviews Linus. :D

I have the older, non-touch screen Kindle and I have no issues holding it one handed cos I can let my grip extend to the edge of the screen without bringing up a menu. The addition of a back light was nice, but the touch screen wasn't needed and possibly hinders functionality.

Regarding keeping your finger in the page of a real book and refering back, the paperwhite has a feature which lets you do this. Just bookmark the page you're reading, then swipe up from the bottom and a 'pop up' appears which allows you to flip through the book while staying on the page you're currently reading. If you really want to examine any page you find, tap on the pop up and it will expand to be full page. When finished looking at the map or whatever, touch the top of the screen and click the back button on the menu bar which will return you to the page you were reading (which you've bookmarked just in case).

I've got so many books at home I've actually started donating to libraries to save space. Once I realized you can just as well store all of them on Paperwhite, I got myself one and I can say when you really dive into the book, you kind of lose the idea that it's a screen, not paper. And the best thing is that it's only a reader, so no social media or youtube to distract you from your reading. And it made me read more. The free sample thing makes it even more good. Definitel one of better investments I made in years.

I just got my Kindle 2 days ago and I love it. I've only used my phone and Kindle app to read before that. There are a lot of pros and cons though. I love the feel & smell of a book and physically owning it but with Kindle, you can take so many books with you. Plus there are a lot of indie authors or exclusive titles only available for Kindle. And if you want to read a really thick and heavy book, I'm sure you can't read it while lying down on your bed. Oh the front light is a major plus. So I guess I love Kindle more, but I still buy real books for collection.

Shopping for some new books is as easy as it could be and most of the time the stuff that I'm reading costs almost nothing (for example, the H.P. Lovecraft collection was only 1,50€). The on top of that, if you have amazon prime you can read a book per month for free... This thing is just amazing

I love my kindle touch. It's my best purchase ever. Since I read about 50 books a year, having all those books around was a pain in the ass. Now I have all my books in one device that I can take with me everywhere. These days I only buy paper copies of books that I really want to have in my "collection" after I've read them on my kindle. A bit more money spent, but a whole lot more space in my shelf, that together with the convinces far outweighs some negatives.
Also, nowadays when I open a real book, it's an experience. It's hard to describe and it might sound silly, but now it's a special moment to read one of my paper books.

I think he will like the Kindle Paperwhite, especially the one-button feature and the backlight. I like both physical books and eBooks. I'm reading more eBooks now because it saves trees and I don't have the space anymore for physical books. But I still buy used books - I'm all for recycling used items rather than tossing them in a landfill. The only downside I see to eBooks is that when the electricity goes out and your eReader doesn't have a charge, you're stuck.

Loved the kindle, first ebook reader ever for me. Got it yesterday as a gift from a student and it works great for me cuz I can buy the books I'm lacking (luckily for us in Chile $10 for a book is still cheap - got the Shining for $1.99 which was awesome). I still do prefer paper books (sucks for the planet but what are you gonna do?) because of the classic feeling you get from reading one which is unique, seeing how little you have left when you're 3/4 done with one, the smell, editions, autographed books... the list goes on and on. Pros with the kindle, the space (specially travelling, saves a lot of hustle of carrying a real book), all those books in one device, battery life, the screen brightness, the feeling of touching the screen (IDK if it's just me but if feels a little like paper).

There are two big reasons e readers are great. When you have maxed out your storage space for bookshelves you can fill up the e reader with hundreds more. The ebook is light enough that holding one is much easier then a physical book when you have arthritis in your hands. This is my third e reader, I use the nook ones. The paperwhite readers are very limited in use so I have upgraded to a nook hd which is really a small tablet.

I never thought i would enjoy reading a book on kindle/tablet/phone. But after i read my first book from m ipad i actually liked it. It was convenient and it didnt demand a good reading light/outdoor light. Although i read it on my ipad mini (no retina) and the pixel density annoyed me and was irritating for my eyes so i bought a kindle paperwhite 2013. And omg what a screen technology the e-ink is. In daylight it looks just like real paper, amazing. So now i read all my book on my kindle paperwhite and i will never switch back to "normal" books. I think though that the price (as you said) should be lower on kindle then the actual book it self. But still, a great experience.

For what it's worth, I read my Kindle on my way too and from work every day standing on the train and I almost always have to use it one-handed. The trick is you pretty much rest it on your hand and you only really use your thumb to for navigation and further stabilization, but mostly it's just your hand. I usually had my pinky along the bottom edge so... yeah. Never had a problem one-handing my Kindle.

depends on a number of factors for me...i really love books, but if the price is right or i'm not going to be jumping around in the book then ebook is nice due to the size vs hard back...i say if it gets you reading then thats the best!

I hate the idea of getting an ereader of any kind. I love my paper books but ive blown this months, last months budgets for entertainment and then some on books just in the last 2 weeks so everyone keeps telling me to get one of these. did you find that you read more/less with this or was it about the same?

I've had a kindle keyboard for a few years, and while it's not the easiest thing to hold, it's much better than a book for me. I've always had a lot of difficulty holding books and keeping my place and just generally being clumsy with books, getting food and greasy fingerprints on the pages, bending and tearing pages, etc. I can at least wipe my kindle off, it's a lot easier to keep my place, and not as easy to do small amounts of damage to, but if you're not careful you'd be surprised how little force is needed to crack the screen. I dunno if they're still making it with the glass filament, but there are more durable ones made with just plastic available elsewhere.

Enjoyed your review of the Kindle Paperwhite. You bring up good observations that I do not see anyone else bring up. In answer to your question do I like books or an e-reader better. Short answer is paper books. If it is a book that I treasure then I will have the paper book in hardback and have it on the Kindle. I consider my e-reader an excellent compliment to my paperbook library. What a pleasure to have a huge library of books in my bag when I travel. The content of what is read is more important than the medium. By the way my 13 year old daughter has a Kindle but prefers paper books. She likes to buy used books. So many that we have gotten her tall book case to hold them.

As much as I love the convenience of having a kindle, nothing beats a paperback book

I much prefer ebooks to physical ones. After I got my Nook Simple Touch, I have found it convenient enough to carry around and I am now ready far more than I was before. There are things I dislike about it, particularly the drm for books, but I live with my gripes for now because I truly appreciate ebooks.

Oh, another point, I agree about the pricing (though digital goods pricing tends to be insane by default) but if you're like me and like having both a physical copy for your shelf and a digital copy to carry around, a lot of books you can down get discounted if you buy the physical copy first. Then the digital is only a few bucks. This is a thing Amazon is doing, though not others.

someone said kindle paperwhite doesn't have SD expansion slot. What? waiting for mine to confirm. Also I heard you can't store your own converted books/pdfs (that you didn't buy from amazon) to the "cloud" (everyone is so into those clouds). So it would be nice to have either SD card expansion or cloud storage for ANY book format. But that's only what I heard from video reviews. I could have heard wrong.

I know its 2022, but still I recently wanted to try out a reader for cheap and I was considering that model. Fortunately I got the older one Kindle Keyboard. Not only it has a free 3G, but also it has a physical page turner buttons and all screen orientations, also although I have slightl tiny thicker bezels I dont have to care about them I can rest my thumb on the middle of the screen as I do on books, because the screen is not touch sensitive. It has a little less resolution and you can see a tiny text distortions if you look closely and have a small font set, and it does not have a backlight(you definetely have to invest in a small attachable led if you read after dark, and the internet browser is experimental and due to intenret changing security measures 60% of websites wont load), but I think despite all the caveats Kindle Keyboard is the best bang for a buck ebook reader still after 13 years.
(did I mention it has a physical keyboard for making notes and searching the net?)

I don't know about the books he has read, but most books I have bought in the Kindlestore have had a significant discount over their paper counterparts, from anywhere between 25-50% off. That might not be true for all titles though, but quite a few has discounts, in my experience.

I got my first kindle today as a birthday gift, and I could not believe this review after use. It is amazing! I totally agree the price of books is unreasonable but the idea it cant be used one handed is nonsense. I was on the train for 3 hours on the way home and held it in one hand reading the Sherlock Holmes collection with no discomfort at all (in portrait and I have really big thumbs). I have always found books to be a hassle to hold comfortably and I think kindle makes the whole experience so much more pleasurable. I do question the longevity of the device since my girlfriend, mother and father are all on their second or third kindle device, and I also don't like their new advertising on the background but am not willing to pay £10 to remove it.
