- 2023 Honda Civic e:HEV hybrid is the Japanese answer to the Mercedes A-Class, BMW 1 Series and Audi A3, offering superb economy, hot-hatch performance and a high-quality cabin. Yep, it’s that good.

Please note the 2023 Honda Civic e:HEV's claimed CO2 emissions on the combined-cycle test is 96g/100km, not the 97g/100km mentioned at 13:21.
Hello Cars Guide - your vehicle seems to have grey leather seating. The Honda in our dealer is only black interior. Is Grey an option?
Do people actually give you schtick over 1g/100km???
On that e-CVT transmission. This is my understanding, so I apologise if I don't get all the technical details correct. It is not a CVT as we commonly know it. As explained by Honda Technical Advisor (Kotaro Yamamoto) the civic hybrid does not actually have a "gearbox". There is no mechanical changing of ratios, as is the case of a CVT gearbox. The Continuously Variable refers to continuously variable available torque by electronic modulation of amperage being sent to the two electric motors. That is why it appears to be "always in the right gear ratio" (remember, no gearbox, no mechanical ratios) and hence the immediate availability of torque. The electric motors aren't really "in the background" they appear to be working in the foreground for that torque delivery. Still think Honda could have come up with a less confusing transmission name than e-CVT.
True
Correct. Why do so many (expert) car reviewers get this so wrong?
@@markhjones100 It seems they are not an experts at all - views is what it counts, no time to even read the technical information - sad…
Good answer and as stated why Honda called it eCVT and object to the misunderstanding is unbelievable
Thank you for this excellent review. What I love about the latest generation Hondas is the timeless design, especially the interiors with clean lines and manually-operated knobs etc. Keep up the good work, Honda. Best greetings from Finland! ☀️🇫🇮
Great review mate 👍 I think I've found my FIRST ever brand NEW car. Excited and cannot wait to test drive one
Thanks for the great review!
I bought myself one in Europe, same Premium Crystal Blue colour with the 2.0 e:hev. I'm super happy with it, I've had the car 9 weeks today and put 9500km on the clock.
Great! Wish you a lot of fun with it. Queation: can you get a childs buggy in the trunk? Like, is it family friendly
@@milanoapfel1836 not an issue at all I don't think. I don't have children, so I couldn't confirm or not.
@@milanoapfel1836 you defenitely can get most child buggies in the trunk unless you have some really high one so you'd need to put one of the back seats down to fit
@@shivamarya5225 cheers mate. Very helpful
Just orderen mine, gotta wait a whole 8Months for it though 🥲
Waitng for mine to be delivered love Hondas👍
Have test driven this and it is genuinely excellent.
You probably haven't driven much else then
@@mharro88
You haven’t driven it have you?
@@mharro88 What a ridiculous reply and so constructive (Sarcasm just in case you were not aware).
@@oggyoggy1299 I've driven it. Laughed at the price and ordered a i30n sedan. Which is a better car in every way. For this price it's nudging EU luxury brand pricing. It's like 10k cheaper in the states. It's just not good value whatsoever for a economy car. Only rusted on Honda fans would consider it. It's no wonder they're dying in this country.
@@mharro88 also test drove a Mazda 3 Astina, Audi A3, Subaru XV, Kia GT and others. The Civic hybrid felt, drove and sounded better than them all. This hybrid system is also different than Toyota's. More torque and appears to have a longer EV only range.
Really hope we get this car in the states with the panoramic sunroof.
Do you have any info on when the CRV Hybrid will be released?
I'm genuinely interested to see sales numbers in the next year or two. Good car but high price and fixed price also. Who are they appealing to exctly?
Gorgeous car and drives beautifully. Shame it costs €44k for an Advance in blue in the Netherlands
Hello Cars Guide - your vehicle seems to have grey leather seating. The Honda in our dealer is only black interior. What's going on, Pl ?
That interior looks rather grey. It really could do with some contrast and texture to break it up especially on those seats.
Please compare it to Corolla hybrid
Why do the car companies tend to release these sorts of cars in Europe and Australia before the US?
At $44,999 driveaway it would be a winner.
Or $29,990.
cuz you are comparing it with Corolla hatch back? Try a test drive (like I did), you may not want to call it a hatch back. It is quite roomy, almost like sedan. So, it is a tricky one to compare since most people will try to compare it with most hatchback, but it interior size will be significantly bigger than all those hatchback car.
But yes, if it was priced at 44K, it will be surely a winner (and by a huge gap!).
Does it come with a spare tire?
No.
In shaithole called Ireland, it starts at 50k Euro.
If honda Australia has half a brain…this motor has to be available on the up coming CRV. Then it’s on!
what's the go with talking about practicality when you don't talk about accessibility into the back seats?
I see that carwow rated this above a Golf, Focus and Astra (Peugeot 308) in its recent comparo. It’s going to be pricey but it’s that good
But not above an Audi A3 Hatch or a BMW Hatch. Its true competitors.
I'd rather buy a i30n sedan for a few K more. This price is laughable
@@Mexxx65 it's better than an A3 already. A3 doesent drive nearly as good, it's based on the same platform as Jetta but with better suspension and interior
@@Mexxx65 I don't see why not. Maybe 20 years ago, but today they're nothing special. For sure they're not offering this advanced powertrain, and chassis refinement as well
@@mharro88 i30n sedan is not same quality interior.
They won’t sell many for that kind of money, nearly 50000€ for the civic, they are crazy
Honda makes amazing cars... overseas. We get overpriced models with less features. Honda isn't worth it in Australia.
Top 5 Honda comment
Ok ok ok...we've already heard from overseas reviews of this car, that you can't manually select EV only or Petrol only.
You've driven it in Australia now. "Around town" ev mode "Highway" petrol engine kicks in. But at what speeds? AU speeds? Around town you mean in 30/40/60/70 kmh limits? Or how about 80kmh? At 90/100/110kph the petrol motor kicks in?
It can go upto 110km/h using motors only as long as battery remains charged But engine will turn on at even 30kmph if bettery needs to be charged. It has an ev mode and you can drive select it but it'll drive on electric if battery is charged. Check Autogefuhl's review
It'll use the electric motor until it can't use them anymore, or you go above 110km/h roughly, so in short it'll just go until you're out of juice. Ev mode is pointless for a car like this except to creep quietly around a carpark, but the car is already super quiet and will do that kind of driving in EV mode by default anyway. Waste of a button to include it.
@@dsub1994 To be precise, the traction motor can pull the car on its own from 0 to top speed. It's designed just like any BEV. The only difference is the source of energy, as you said it will eventually run out of battery.
Parallel hybrid mode can be engaged at constant speeds between ~70 and 140 km/h, but that's done only because direct drive happens to be more efficient to cruise. In fact, in full acceleration, the electric motor will be again the one doing 100% of the work, at any given speed.
Nope.
There's NO CVT!!
i just don't get it. honda generally build more premium car than toyota. the reliability is on par with toyota as well. yes, toyota is cheaper than it but take a look the interior quality in the rev4 and it is easy to explain why it is cheap. why $55000 is expensive to australians while $70000 vw passat is a fair price? just because it is an asian brand? so where is holden? at least as an asian, i still own the commodore
The Passat is a class above in mid-size category.
@@zaamuro8408 In VW's mind, definitely... In terms of technical offering is a bigger Golf with nothing special. Good car but just like the next one.
This Civic is offering some tech that VAG is not providing.
@@zaamuro8408and yet civic has a much bigger boot space and only 2 inch shorter in rear legroom, and same in front space
@@shivamarya5225 Yes it does, but tell that to the average Australian consumer....like the reviewer said, they could've just called this the new Accord Euro.
@@zaamuro8408 Where is the Golf hybrid and what would it's price be ?
What is the price of a PHEV Passat ?
I have a 2004 hybrid Honda. Caused so much pain, a well designed HUGE LEMON I decided not in my present life and in the next few one going to make a mistake to own a Honda. They should just make a combustion engine car and after just retire from car making...
Wow 55k for a Honda even an electric petrol version
Where is wireless android auto?
Is it AU Dollar or USA Dollar
Australian Dollars.
For this proce you can get old m2 aupra and so many funny car . Why you must pay fo mich for hybrid car
Huh? ''Before the internet Hondas used to be a premium small car'' ?..if you go back a bit further the Civic was a tiny economy car.
Trunk, Hood and Windshield...lol
It's 10k too expensive.
What is the top speed ?
111 mph
I think the civic hatch design from the back doesn't look like a new car.
Agreed
Dont we have this is us yet ?
No spare tyre and tyre repair kits are not 100% reliable. What if I get a flat where there is no phone reception?
send your wife off on foot
not with the price they're asking for.
Ok badge slave
How can that be $55 grand, how much different is your currency to ours here in the United States to make it 55,000..lol
The civic is easily a Mercedes C class vehicle.
At this pricr - either this or a rav4 awd hybrid hmmmmmmm 😂
Honda "has" lost the plot
This one should be 47k and the 1.5T should be about 39k. Maximum. At 55k this thing is in over its head competing against some serious hot hatches....
Such as?
After honda screwed me, will NEVER come close to it. In fact, honda effectively ceased being Honda when the Old Man died (1999?). Now it's just yet another ford but with previous glory.
My last honda was a 1998 Civic that I sold a couple of years ago. It was the last good batch but with at least one REALLY weird "feature" - it had the charging warning indicator light on the same fuse as the alternator charging circuit so if (in my case - WHEN) the fuse blows, the very same warning light that is supposed to inform you about malfunction renders inoperative. What kind of moron would do that?!?
But that's not the main event that removed honda from my verizon.
Conclusion: TOYOTA ALL THE WAY!
These Civics are way too expensive. The 1.5 turbo is a joke at $47k and this is ridiculous at $55k. If this was 47 and the 1.5 was around 40, I would consider one.
That's the market Today. There is no hybrid bellow 40k. Even the shitiest ones are Like 40k, atleast Honda is Good.
Seems fantastic. But in this price range, a full electric seems a better option.
But you do not get such a fastback design with low CW value and that range. EVs = SUV why? Does not make any sense. That’s why Hyundai comes now with the „aerodynamical E-Limousine“
Full electric would not be in this price range other than cheap Chinese product
@@johngibson9463 if I was in the market, 65k for the model 3 would be in the same category in my view.
@@qufi1 Who makes a proven dependable and reliable EV at this point of time ?
No one does.
That's why i'm watcing this video only Japanese makers have the reputation of building cars that last for decades.
We only use 10% of our brains? How can you be so sure if you & the reaserchers who said that was only using 10% of your brains? 😂😂😂
No electric rear hatch at this price point is a joke.
Completely useless with a lid this light. Wasted weight and money, plus would have eaten up a sensible amount of boot volume on the sides
I don’t think anybody can put the shine back on the Honda brand. Honda has lost its way, overpriced and underwhelming.
This guy is trying to. Good advertisement
Have you driven it, if not your opinion is lightweight
@@johngibson9463 yes I have. I'd recommend it for 42-46 drive away but it's a laugh at over 50.
@@mharro88 Yet similarly specced /sized Octavia Limited Edition is mid $50's, and uses more fuel and higher service costs.
@@johngibson9463 but it's way more premium , more features like cooled seats 360 degree camera , nicer materials, bigger inside with the wagon , longer warranty 7 yrs , trusted engine, dsg and there's a decent dealer network unlike Honda and more fun to drive with a LSD I believe.
Also it's actually 50k drive away not mid 50s like this thing either.
