    Hi. My name is ItsJabo and I speedrun games daily over at Twitch. The whole purpose of a speedrun is to playthrough a game as fast as you can, with a set of prerequisite rules. I enjoy speedrunning a variety of games and look to challenge myself in a huge amount of ways. It's an alternative way of discovering what's hidden and possible within the games you play, while also doing some pretty amazing tricks and glitches. Thanks for watching.

    While it doesn't answer the question of _why_ reload dashing works exactly, what I can tell you is that JE Sawyer has gone on record as saying that the looping reload mechanic was a problem throughout development, with them having to squash bugs with it all the time. In fact, at release there was an issue where you could get stuck in a infinite reload animation.
    While we don't exactly have specifics, we can probably assume the looping reload code is some real spaghetti.

    The science behind the reload dash- when the survivor reloads a weapon they enter the reloading animation, if u open up the pipboy during it u cancel the animation(well known), and when the survivor reloads while walking ur character moves forward while reloading (obviously), however when you enter the pipboy while reloading and moving forward the game thinks u should be moving forward cause of the reloading animation so ur hit box moves forward a lil but because u enter the pipboy it makes the character stay in place and the game teleports u to the location it thinks you should've gone based on ur hitbox as compensation, however, it overcompensates it by increasing your movement speed and shifting you in the desired direction which boosts u forward.
    But what about infinite dash? Well it mashes the character hit box teleportation breaking quicksave, the speed stacking of speedcripple and the initial push of reload dash into a superman dash! Atleast that's what I've pieced together

      Sorry to bump an old comment, but do you think that single shell reloads have to be used because it's an animation you can stop in order to pause your momentum?
      Like, if you do a magazined weapon then as soon as the animation is finished you're done - the gun is reloaded, there's no further animations so carry out.
      But with single shells you finish the animation, it considers whether it needs to do the animation again, which allows you to momentarily pause and "finish" the new animation further down like you suggested.
      I don't know enough about that animations and coding but it seems like a logical solution to me

  • @LightsPlayable
    @LightsPlayable Před 2 lety +7

    my best guess as to why infinite dash works is it could be compounding speed modifiers, akin to speed cripple, as gun in hand, reload, and pipboy exit all have independant mover speeds, plus the already enhanced base movespeed of spped cripple. It causes a loop of speed buffs, and when you clip it creates a false floor hit box, and since the game engine is coded that player moving faster than X speed will bounce off a hit box, it causes a constant flying preventing the speed modifier from resetting to speedcripple speed.

    I would think the reasoning behind the animation canceling would throw someone so far would be because let's say you did just, fully reload each bullet, when you start, you're at point A, when you're done reloading you are then at point B. Canceling the reload animation attempts to catch you up to where you would be if you did follow through with the whole reload in a linear launch. That's just my two cents though.

    I think it has something to do with the game setting "fmoverunmult" which you can change with console default being "4" but set it to "10" and you get the same result. As for reloading as a way to enable it combined with the animation of the pipboy going up being sped up I think it's similar with the slowdown and speedups of animations like how you reload at light speed in vats

    Such a great illustration of speed running technique and history. I was walking through the aisles of Home Depot and felt a sour pain in my stomach. The same dreadful pain of knowing that our days on Earth are numbered. I wondered if my job was good enough, if I saw my family and friends enough. My vision clouded as I tried to hide my burning red face and fight back tears. Counting the tiles on the floor, I made my way to the restroom. The cool water from the sink brought me back into focus like cleaning dirty eyeglass lenses. I took a deep breath and knew that no matter what happens, we are only as good as we feel and those feelings come from within. As my Father said, "No one is looking out for you, but you." I think about that all the time to keep on the righteous path. I will definitely be liking, subbing, and following on Twitch. Thank you.

    From my understanding of several games that have speedruns is that the reload dashing is most likely reserving the momentum you have when you pause and as you're holding it and the pipboy and unequipping and reloading animations cause the game to get confused so it just launches you. A lot of games have glitches just like this and it seems to always be that

      @@nathanclark2424 looks like that's caused by momentum being stored and the game consistently making you move faster instead of the game just being so buggy that it tries to make up for the stored momentum being held and released like in FNV. Because in FNV it's caused by the menu stopping everything at once and you holding down the walk button stores that momentum but in RE4 case it seems a bit different where it is stored but it doesn't cause the game to violently launch you forward but instead makes all of your movements faster so they're similar but the only real difference is how the game handles the stored momentum

    Is this perhaps related to the bug you get reloading single feed weapons where if you hold down a movement key throughout the reload animation, and continue to hold it at the end of the animation, your character seems to have a brain fart, they wont fire, VATS doesn't work, and they sort of jostle around for a good 10 seconds before everything "clears up" and you can keep shooting?

  • @kevkevplays5662

    When I did it in a less refined way the game lagged so I think the reason it gives you a speed burst is time dilation, it slows down time for you but it is still running it at the same speed in time or something so when you close your inventory it will put you on where you would be without the lag, so therefore it dialates time or something

    Could the reason for this glitch be:
    The pip-boy "stops" time, but the game still calculates where the player _should_ be as if the animation played out completely? Hence why direction/momentum MUST be applied before, during, and after the pip-boy. So the game speeds you up to where it thinks you should be. Which is why if you're on flat ground you only go so far. If uphill, you go to space because the game doesn't know what to do with that speed and impact (simply not coded for it, it's not supposed to happen). If downhill you fly straight ahead.
    As for why it's only single shell reload weapons? Maybe animation length, or improper coding, or both? Clip/magazine reloads could be too fast to where the game either can't or doesn't bother with running said calculation. Or they were coded not to, and single shell was forgotten about or overlooked during testing (game was "rushed" after all)

    Seems like an animation speed multiplier is kicking in to make two 1 second animation complete in the required 1 second, the problem seems to be that movement itself is considered one of these animations, so its added in and multiplied along with the weapon reloads that are trying to happen in the fraction of a second between the weapon reloading and the pip boy opening, must have been no way to separate hand movement (reloading) with leg movement (running) a good way to test that would be to stand still when doing it but jump (space bar) instead of forward (w) if that happens it means your whole character animations would be tied into it, like if you could throw something in that window of time like a grenade it would also carry that momentum f4om the arm swing

    This looks similar to the source momentum storing glitch.
    My guess by holding down a movement key whilst an animation plays (in this case looping animation) which is then cancelled by not only another animation, but the removal of the weapon, (which also stops the character moving forward) the "dash" could be playing/executing all movement frames that would have played whilst the pipboy is open with a multiplier.
    My guess is that the engine runs a lot faster for some reason with the pipboy open, and due to the engine speed being tied to frame rate, it creates a much larger than expected dash.

    Reload dash is as simple as this, your position and momentum are saved when you begin the reload animation, performing a second reload animation causes you to save that position again while it also tries to remember the beginning position all the while doing math to calculate where, then opening your pip boy causes a more solid position save to make sure your character stays moving upon exiting adding those together and then unequipping the original intended weapons causes the system to get confused and it most likely adds the totals together instead of just choosing the medium. However it could be multiplying the wrong totals and accidentally swapping the momentum speed with position and it causes your character to do a quick position readjustment which also multiplies the momentum a second time after causing you to be leveraged off of objects in game, hence flying in the air. i could be wrong but im also not good at explaining things

    The way reload dashing works probably the game guesses the distance you'd have finished the reload but once interrupted and holding a movement input but the games can't comprehend it so it just shoots forward to get the distance you'd have traveled but crazy fast.....(probably)

    Personally, i think this is caused because, somehow, everything in the game pasues, but not your character's location, it keeps moving foward, so when you pull out the pipboy, the game drags you all the way to where the new character location point is supposed to be, because of the momentum of being dragged to the new point, it sends you flying, it just an idea, i haven't play NV in a while nor do i have it installed.

    Also reload dash works on console now cause on series x new Vegas is 60

  • @doughyguy2663
    @doughyguy2663 Před 2 lety +4

    I have a theory (well partial theory) - the reload animation is somewhat dependent on gun condition and what type of weapon it is.. As in, a damaged weapon takes longer to reload from empty. But what you're doing here is swapping ammo types, which always takes the same amount of time for any weapon (almost instantaneously).
    Let's say you're reloading a 9mm pistol and it takes 4 seconds (just pulling a number out of thin air for this example), but the Ammo Swap always happens within 2 seconds. So in order to have the character move fast enough to complete an ammo swap quicker than the reload, the overall movement rate is increased. The longer the weapon reload time, the greater the discrepancy between Reloading and Ammo Swap. That's why the revolver seems to work the best here - it's trying to squeeze you loading in 6 rounds into the set time the Ammo Swap takes. And opening the PipBoy interrupts it, but leaves the lingering movement rate boost in play for a second or two. So that burst of speed is leftover from when the game momentarily sped up the character's movement rate, that's why if you're already running forward, your run speed gets increased for less than a second. So I think the engine is trying its best to squeeze an animation that had a time dependent on weapon type/condition into the set period of time an Ammo Swap takes. I suppose one way to test it would be to compare the degree of speed boost you get with a revolver at 100 percent condition versus a damaged one, and also compare it to something that takes a ton of time like Fat Man or Missile Launcher.
    Again, just a theory. I could completely wrong here...
