    Relive the amazing moment Philip Boit became Kenya's first ever Winter Olympian, competing in the 10km cross country skiing event at the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympic Games.
    After training in Finland in preparation to the Games, Philip Boit won the slot to represent Kenya in the Nagano 1998 Olympic Games. In the 10km classic cross-country skiing, Boit came in 92nd and last place.
    As he arrived to the finish line, he had the newly crowned Olympic champion Bjørn Dæhlie waiting to greet him for his achievement as the first Kenyan Winter Olympic athlete.
    Philip Boit would still return to the Winter Olympics in two more editions at Salt Lake City 2002 and Torino 2006.

    This moment, more than most championships runs or big time showdowns is what exemplifies what the Olympics are about. The pursuit of excellence, whether personal, national, regional, or global and the unveiling of true character, class and sportsmanship that should go hand in hand with it. Congratulations to Philip Boit for finishing and another congratulations to Bjorn Daehlie for true sportsmanship. THIS is the Olympic Spirit. May we never forget it

    This calls to mind something an athlete said when asked why he refused to drop out of race he had no chance to win.He said "My country didn't send me 5,000 miles to start a race, they sent me 5,000 miles to finish it" Sometimes just completing a race is its own victory.

    I was just thinking about this. Kenyans own marathons. I thought hmmm, what if they decide to take up cross country skiing too.

    • @MotRi1986
      @MotRi1986 Před 6 lety +3

      Sorry I'm 4 years late, as it turns out cross country skiing is a surprisingly hard technical sport, you simply need to do some type of skiing from an early age to be able to compete. What I'm waiting for is cyclists from Kenya and Ethiopia, it is a much, much easier sport to learn than xc skiing, it is quite a few examples of world class cyclists that started up in their late teens or early 20th.

    • @HarbingerOfTruth1
      @HarbingerOfTruth1 Před 3 lety

      In addition to what Morten mentioned you'll need a good support team to get good skiis as well as having bad skiis will make winning nearly impossible. It will also be hard to adapt to the cold temperatures as oxygen intake when it's cold is quite different from when warm and if cold enough can actually damage your lungs. Also unlike marathons you need a lot of upper body strength for skiing, far more than believe. I think the sport skiing can be compared to the most is probably swimming as in how much you need to use your body.

    Mr. Boit was not a good skier, but a terrific athlete. Dæhlie himself said that Philip Boit ran 3000m steeplechase on the same time Dæhlie ran a flat 3000.

    • @charlesthorndike2702
      @charlesthorndike2702 Před 3 lety

      Well, if true, that's crazy! Dæhlie's PB in the 3000m is 8:18. 8:18 in the 3000m steeplechase is only a couple of seconds from being among the world's best. Also, Boit's PB in the 800m is 1:46.06.

    • @MotRi1986
      @MotRi1986 Před 6 lety

      They are allowed to get a new pole or ski if they break for example if they crash. You also have the event 30k duathlon that was on the Olympic program for the first time in 2006, there you race 15k classic style then you change skies and poles and do the rest of the race in skating. Around 10 years ago the international ski federation made a new rule in the longest distance 50k for men and 30k for women, they made it legal to get prepare new skis with fresh wax, the men are allowed to change skies two times and the women are allowed to change their skies one time during the race.

  • @BobSmith-dk8nw

    My understanding of this - is that the network wanted another human interest story like the Jamaican Bobsledding Team - so - they hired this guy via a Nike sponsorship, and had him train in Finland. They also staged the "friendship" between him and the Champion - thus the Champion waiting there for his "Friend" to finish. Some of the other networks got a hold of this and realized that it was really all about manufacturing a human interest story by the net work broadcasting the Olympics.
    Now - the guy had learned how to ski and really did finish the race but whether or not he'd have been there in the first place without a lot encouragement, in the form of money had not the network wanted their human interest story, is questionable.
    .

    • @raympet
      @raympet Před 3 lety +2

      Bullshit.... He was sponsored by Nike but why would that matter?? It is no secret ether... Bjørn and Boit is still friends and Bjørn was not sponsored by anyone to stand there waiting for him. He did becourse he is a nice guy and everyone was very surprised he was able to finish at all with those terribel skis and the wet snow. It was after this Philip and Bjørn made friends and he has been here to Norway many times after this. This was not hes last Olympics ether. Making up conspiracy theories about things like this makes you one very big loser...
