    Matti Nykänen is a legend, but wasn't first and foremost known for his style. The clip choosed here is symptomatic - long, yes, but rowdy, no ski control and with a bad landing. It's also quite funny that Funaki, possibly the jumper ever with the best style (tied with Toralf Engan), didn't pull off the perfect jump here. He really didn't. He's a bit unstable in the landing; the 5x20 should've never been given. Well, well, it's a great jump nonetheless, and Funaki is always, still, a joy to watch. He's is jumping to this day, just search for him on CZcams and you'll find videos of him pushing 50 while still jumping with excellent style. Truly a gift to the sport and to the world. Regards from Norway :---)

    • @bimbogiallo
      @bimbogiallo Před 5 lety +11

      1) tradition
      2) most importantly, since a pretty Landing requires to exit the aero position earlier, it gives an incentive to safer landings. A distance only based competition would end up on who dares leave the aero position the latest, which opens the door to huge safety concerns. The athletes themselves were recently asked about it and virtually unanimously were agreeing to keep things the way they are since they all know there would be that one random lunatic who would take massive risks and force them to follow.
      Furthermore, data shows that, provided you land "properly", distance and style are correlated quantitatively. So ultimately it already comes down to who jumps the farthest, as long as they follow a certain esthetic pattern.
