Cutting up a giant tree trunk. The chainsaw is just big enough to do it.

  • Today I am going to cut up the huge tree trunk of the tree we cut down with a man lift. I need to cut it up so we can split it into firewood later. Also I will cut the stump into something the goats can climb on. I am using a Stihl 391 chainsaw with a 25" bar. It is just big enough to do the job.

I have had rounds 3/4 that size that are still too tough to manage even on level ground. So, I took the chainsaw and cut it into halves or quarters until they were in manageable sizes to move under the log splitter. I have done all that and after I am done, wonder how much that half cord of wood just cost me.

You can still peg the stump with mushroom inoculation pegs to turn it into a mushroom farm also. The goats can play on it for a few years as the fungi break it down and you get some mushrooms if you can get them before the goats do when it is fruiting.

A wedge cut on the side you wanted it to fall in would have let it fall by itself, but good job. Like your musical selection as well. I've been working on a 150+ year old water oak that fell with a base greater than 50" wide and branches that are 40" in diameter and 36" in diameter. Got 4 cords out of it so far, and a lot of wood left to cut.

those 2in1 sharpeners are the BEST !!!! maintains the proper gullet and depth gauge at the same time. i think it does better than a new chain that you buy from a store. i've been using these for several years now. Fast, easy and consistent from one cutter to the next. Just try to give each cutter the same number of strokes/cuts when filing.
