  • I have some gigantic rounds of wood that need split. Some are so big, I can't move them. But I need to split these into firewood. So let's see what it takes.

He's not going to burn it until it dries (next year). So he should have left it for the goats to play on and eat the bark off. When it's dry, it's easier to move. I have to do this in order to move them.

It helps if you can hit the same spot twice!!😄. My grandfather taught me to split wood with a single blade axe. He called me "Lightening" saying I never hit the same place twice!! He was the best I ever saw!! I can still see him in my mind using that axe. I miss him greatly. Good job, man. Good job.

One tip I can give is to try to handle the wood as few times as possible. so for example. when you have split the wood on the wood splitter. do not lay the wood on the ground, place it on a cart or in the bucket on the tractor. so you do not have to pick up the wood later. thanks for a very nice and inspiring channel.

The easiest way to split huge logs, is start from the side edges., and work your way around the log, towards the middle. It works like a charm.

Definitely. You're working against the entire weight of the piece doing it this way- it's like trying to eat a 1 pound burger by stuffing the whole thing in your mouth at once! Especially when trying to split by hand, you have to work smarter, not harder.

Attack at the weak spots. You have several splits in the wood. split them wider. Work from the outside in. Once you widen them you can cut slabs off the sides along the splits.
Even with your hydraulic splitter use the natural splits in the wood.

I love cutting, splitting, stacking, and burning wood. I have had 2 ruptured discs and have to be very mindful of what I do and how I do it. I cannot tackle big rounds like those anymore. I never had a log splitter, but kept a few steel wedges and cut a few wooden wedges when I was trying to split big stuff. You're right about the way the grain was in every which direction. Makes it almost impossible to split by hand without either a group of wedges or your splitter. Even with the splitter you had a time. Those rounds were more than 500lbs and moving them into position is the hardest part.

Those butt ends are a beast. I some times just let them rot. Maple is always easier to work green than dry. One suggestion I would try would be try splitting those large but tends from the outside in vice down the middle. If it doesn’t have knots this usually will work. Makes you think about the days gone bye: (tough men back then) and will give you some awesome cramps at night. Good job.

Almost painful to watch because I just went through the same thing last year on several trees. Same process until I got the chainsaw out and made it easy on myself. One day I would get it to a size I could lift and then finish splitting the next day. I thought the next day would go faster but each one of those "manageable pieces" is another 4 splits on the splitter. that adds up exponentially. To all those who buy your wood and think your wood guy is too expensive... Watch this video!!! It is insulting to ask for a discount.

When i was in highschool 35-36 yrs ago i made a coffee table out of silver maple and my neighbor seen it and wanted one also. So i made her one and she still has it to this day. She's been offered up to $1500.00 for it. But we had a agreement when i built it for her that when she passes on the coffee table comes back to me.

That maple tree could have been a super awesome piece for your log cabin, I actually make table tops out of large maple tree bases as I have a Alaskan sawmill. If you make cookie cuts with the wood chunks they make unique table tops. I'm currently working on 12 smaller ones for end tables which can be used indoors or outside as they are also poly coated.
FYI - if you think it wasn't worth it for some reason those are the ones you want for the table tops because they add unique character to the whole concept.

Nice video and admire your determination. A quick tip. When cutting those rounds with your chainsaw it’s much easier on your saw and quicker to cut with the grain(turn the log on end and cut from fresh cut to fresh cut or with the bark) than against the grain. You’ll get very long chip and much easier on your equipment.

I just worked up a huge pin oak. Had to buy a 24 inch chainsaw. I ended up having and quartering some rounds. I used the chainsaw to start a line and then wedged two on the same side. Two wedges on the same side prevents what happened to you in most cases. I have a third, wider wedge I use for finishing a split. Sometimes I get all three stuck and need the chainsaw. The 24 inch Husqvarna saved me on this one. LMAO

I would always rip the big logs with my chain saw sometimes three cuts then you can deal with the smaller logs .... nice pile of stacked wood I always enjoyed splitting with a maul

You should watch Chris .....In the wood yard.....his brother has big rounds and shows a lot of good info on how to handle em.....you have some of the best longest lasting fire wood and so never give up on em....

When I do something like that, my wife calls me hard-headed, foolhardy or some other terms I won't repeat here. I will just say that you are one determined individual. The joy and satisfaction of getting something like that done is so satisfying, it's worth every calorie burned. It's not about the wood, the axes or the splitter. It's about a man (or woman), setting a goal and completing it. Well done.

Use the splitting maul as a second wedge and strike it with a sledgehammer and also start from the outside edge of the log round and work your way in towards the center of the rounds that might help you out 🙂 nice video

It’s a lot a lot a lot of work for sure and a lot a lot of handling 😅. Grew up splitting logs and no such thing as a mechanical splitter then all by axe , wedges, chainsaw . I still cut firewood today but have a log splitter now 🤗 . Definitely a workout !!

Start at the outside edge, take smaller chunks. Love splitting wood by hand.

yeah, thats the way we always split big wood too (but can't say that i loved it, just had to do it)....you have to be careful handling these big pieces, they will destroy your back and put you down....be careful with them for sure
