- A full race vlog of my first ever marathon at Chester 2022. Goal time was sub 3hrs40m as a target for my first attempt after a successful training block.
See how I get on. Do I hit the infamous wall? Do I find the elusive runners high?
A thoroughly enjoyable day, at a well organised event with great support across the route and a general feel good, friendly city.

Looks quite tough course pal
You did great. Ive got my first marathon here in a few weeks shooting for 3.20
Gona be tough by looks of it like.
It’s only tough as you hit some pretty significant hills when you really don’t want to. They finished me off last year and I couldn’t get going again. Enjoy it, I’ll be down watching this year!
I'm the bald bloke in the dark blue polo shirt and black football shorts running away up the hill at 14:53 in your video. It was my 1st marathon too and that was f***in' hard mate, I was not expecting it to be as hard as it was.
Well done pal, we're legends now, sub 4 is a proper achievement! Big congrats dude!
You were one of many running away from me over the last 10k! Well done on your first marathon…..yes the ups and downs over the last few miles seemed to drain me. We are now members of the sub-4 club! 👍🏻
hi I did my frist chester marathon can't be live I done it loveley people still thinking about it amazing thing running is in my life I got park run to thank for my raceis
Well done on your first Marathon!
Hope you felt better once you got home. Be proud of yourself 🎉
I did thanks, and I am quite proud of my first marathon attempt. I was a bit down post race probably due to fatigue, but all in all I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and am keen to do more in future!
Well done Sir. It was my first marathon too. Should have been for Newport in a few weeks and a 16 week training block. Then they moved Newport to next year as I was already into the block. So, I managed to get in at Chester but now was only getting a 12 week block. Trained for a 3.30 finish with the aim of going sub 4 giving me a half hour leeway. Did 3.52 in the, so around 5 mins behind you. I was super impressed with everything about that race, except that brutal jump up at the end. Everything was screaming at me 20 miles in, as like you, I had not gone beyond there before. Had about 10 mins walking on and off in those last 10ks. But now we both know about beyond the 32km we have experience and can improve for our next one, I cannot wait and am already signed up for Brighton. Hope you are feeling better now, was a little worrying how you felt after. I just kept walking to my car which was on the Racecourse. Next day I did a tour of the walls both clock and anticlockwise and a few days later, I feel a lot better even stairs are no longer my enemy.
Great video too
Very similar to me. I aimed for 3:40, was running at 3:32 until nearly 30k then fell away. But yes the experience will help and can only improve next time. Well done on your first marathon (considering it was a shortened training block) and good luck for Brighton. Thanks for watching!
Well Done! I ran yesterday and found the course tougher than I anticipated. The hills around mile 22 and 24 are at a cruel point of the course and the headwind in also didn't help. Congratulations on completing your first marathon :-)
Thanks! Yes the hills in the second half seemed to sap my legs and I naturally slowed more than I would have liked. The first marathon of many hopefully…..
Great time for your first marathon, well done. Although you didn't meet your main goal you should be proud.
Thank you. I am proud, it took me a day or so for it to sink in, but I’m very happy with my first marathon attempt. It was a challenging route and I’m happy to finish and in a decent time. Thanks for watching!
Nice one. Dawn ran this race last year in 3:28. It brought back memories of the course. Different finish to last year. It seemed to go on forever!
Have subbed.
Yes, the finish moved from the park to down by the river. The length was probably due to my slow shuffle at the end! Thanks for watching!
Well done! I did the metric marathon that day and the finish line was like ' where the hell is the finish?? Too 😃
Yeh they changed it this year. I did the metric last year, and then stepped up to Marathon this year. That finish funnel seemed to go on forever…..
Brilliant mate, mega impressed 👏😀💪
I was pretty happy myself! I’d like those last 14k back though as I slowed massively…….
Well done, fantastic effort.
Thank you David. I will definitely be running more marathons in the future……
Well done! You were fantastic! Great effort - why do the organisers make the last few k so looong? 🤔😁
Great footage of the run.
Thanks, I didn’t feel fantastic at the time! Yeh that finish was never ending….maybe it’s cruel humour?! Thanks for the kind feedback.
Great motivating video!! That’s my goal time for. BQ!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it……good luck 👍🏻
Immense. Looks like such a scenic marathon! I’ve just watched this and booked on for this year.
Random Q. What’s the toilet situation like on course? Suffer with a bit of the runners trots on occasion…
Hi Jack, it is a nice marathon, with lots of countryside broken up with little villages. You’ll love it! Let me know how you get on….
There are toilets at every water station so every 3 miles or so….hopefully that will be enough….
@@LARKRunningUK brill, thanks for the info mate!
well done your so polite when running
I find it amazing how people stand out cheering strangers on. I always like to show my appreciation and say thank you…..
@@LARKRunningUK im in the ballot for next year im only 18
For London? Yeh I’ve entered the ballot for 2023 🤞🏻
@@LARKRunningUK yep 👍
Good luck with the ballot…
Very well done - looked like the longest last 400 metres ever!
Thanks! Felt like it too, people just kept saying nearly there……
