MARATHON Training 2.0: Week 2 RECAP
Week 2 of marathon training complete, and as usual, runs were moved and altered to get them done. No week of training is often straightforward for me, but I’m happy to alter plans and adapt where needed.
00:00- Intro
00:43- Week 2 Recap
06:49- Summary
07:30- Look Ahead
08:02- Wrap Up
This week I also deliberately moved my workouts around, to avoid running long and slow on consecutive days. Hopefully this change will work for me and allow my legs time to liven up between my longer runs.
Week 3 will be different again, as I’m pacing the Northwich 10k next weekend for RunThrough. If anyone is running that event, I’ll see you down there!
Follow along with my marathon training series and see how I get on…..
2 down, 14 to go……
Thanks as always for watching.

What marathon are you training for?
Hi Osian, I’m doing Chester. I ran it in 2022 as my first marathon and doing it again this year…..👍🏻
oh fantastic, good luck im sure you will smash it.. what time are you hoping to finish? i will also be doing same one. Will look out for you. Great to see you have a well scheduled training plan & thanks for sharing it.
@osianlewis1346 I’m training at around 3.20 pace but will likely set out at 3.30 pace and see. What about you? Do you have a goal time?
Excellent video, thanks for taking the time to review the shoe and mentioning what it's good for.
No problem Andy, thanks for watching!
Hello will you review the 680 v8?
Hi, I’ve no plans to buy v8 at the moment…..
Tip 6 - wear Reebok Floatride! 👍🏻 Can you expand on the first tip about Sustained Intervals? I want to get quicker but don't know how to use varied pace to achieve this.
Yes no problem. For the 10k the best workouts are 10x 1k and 5x 2k intervals. The avg pace you can run those reps (with 2mins walk rec in between) is a decent indicator of 10k fitness. Work on getting those intervals faster and your 10k time will improve 👍🏻
Lets goo!
💯 looking forward to getting into it, once my legs recover from the break!
@@LARKRunningUK 💯💪💯
I will see you at Chester this year (1st marathon attempt)
Yes you will! You’ll love it James, nothing like being on the start line for your first marathon. Chester was my first too. All the best with your training….! 👍🏻
Greay review. Love my V1s. Used for marathon training and Parkruns/tempos, but not racing! Currently at 800km, no loss of life in the foam, a very hardy foam, a lot like Lightstroke Pro. Excited to see what V3 is like for a full racing shoe from Puma 👍
Thanks for the feedback Mike, good to know they will last longer than my prediction. I’ve liked them so far and hopefully they’ll propel me round the marathon in Oct…..👍🏻
Congrats Adam. Brilliant time that! Sub 1:30 soon... I ran the Aj Bell half as my 2nd ever half mara back end of last month. Surprised myself hitting a 1:31:26. Just went for it on the day, felt comfortable at 6:50 -7:00 /mi pace without really doing an 8-10 mile test run. Keep up the vids. Love em
Yeh happy with that after less than ideal training. Well done on your Half 👏🏼 Is that the Salford one? It’s the best when you just feel good and surprise yourself. Videos will continue, I’m going into marathon training now so lots of content coming up….👍🏻
I've just ordered a pair on Sports Pursuit website for just under £50 Inc postage. Going to use them for everyday wear, walking, work (I run a coffee van) I might do the odd run in them although I have the ASICS Novablast 4 for my running.
You won’t be disappointed. They’re great and will be perfect for what you are planning on using them for! 👍🏻
cheap, light and good running shoe
My thoughts exactly!
Have a good trip! ☀
Will try my best! 😀
Great running. Cant beat a pb 👌
Thanks Stu! Wasn’t sure where I was fitness wise, but delighted with that 👍🏻
nice! what marathon are you doing?
I’m re-running Chester. It was my first back in 2022 so want to have another crack and see my progress…..you got any races on the horizon?
Well done mate 👏
Thanks Daz. Wasn’t sure how I’d get on but happy with a solid run 👍🏻
@@LARKRunningUK I definitely run better free running than I do at events. Puts you in gd shape to roll into marathon training looking forward to following your progress and im glad its not me 🤣
Yeh I’ve enjoyed no racing this year and just training and smashing out a time trial. Marathon training should be ‘fun’, and I’m miles ahead of where I was 2 years ago…..
I've alot of pacing events coming up,I saw your pacing northwich 10k thats a new race and a small hill at the start 🤣 but u get a small down hill further in
@darrensankey7821 I’m only doing the 50 minute at Northwich, so should be a nice jog. Then I haven’t got another RT pacing event until September…..
Is it water repellent, during drizzly weather conditions? Thanks
Yes, mostly. It doesn’t absorb water as it’s a plastic based upper, but some does get through as it’s breathable. Is the only shoe I’ve owned where you see water spraying from the toes as you run…..
Great job on the run and the video! Keep up the good work. Dropped you a like.
Thanks for watching, and supporting!
Looking forward to the 100 miles review. Any idea how this is different from the Mizuno Wave Sky 6 or 7 is it less or more cushioned?
Hi Neil, 100 mile review coming soon. I’ve not ran in the Wave Sky but looking at the stats they look very similar. Wave Sky has slightly more midsole and stack. Thanks for watching….
Back of the pack runner, but Chester was my first ever half at the weekend - bit of an eye opener! Thanks for recording and sharing!
Well done on your first half John! It was mine last year, and yes half marathons and beyond, are some distance no matter how you spin it. Hope you enjoyed it….👍🏻
Well done bro . Currently I’m loosing weight to get into my first marathon. I’m 44 so I need to get in slowly lol
Yes just take it slow and build up gradually. It’s never too late to start running! All the best, let me know how you progress
@@LARKRunningUK I live in Wrexham so I’ve followed you on strava .
@serafettinkaya6012 you should do the Wrexham Half next year. I paced it this year and will be racing it next year….
Slow running is absolutely something I struggle with, I always hate that feeling of going so slow I could walk it, living in a City doesn't help as there are less routes to plod along I guess... Will keep working at it over the summer ⛱️
Yes I’m the same. I am working on my easy running, trying to deliberately run slower and reap the benefits. I usually put a podcast on and display my HR to try and remain slow……
Hi, love your videos! Have you ever tried Skechers GoRun shoes? How would NB 680 compared to Skechers GoRun? Thanks in advance.
Hi, glad you like the content! I’ve never actually ran in Skechers ever so can’t compare. Looking at the stats they are both comfy but I’d go for the NB if they are similarly priced. Thanks for watching….
@@LARKRunningUK Really appreciate your quick reply!! I'm genuinely in love with your content!! It's extremely detailed and comprehensive! Hope to see more from you! I'd appreciate it if you are interested in Skechers and give it a try one day (no force at all!) And if you don't mind, may I know what's your opinion on the brand Skechers? Compared to NB, Nike, Adidas, Asics etc. Thank you!
@aneshtkl I’ll likely give them a go in the future. Each year when I restock my running shoe rotation, I tend to experiment with different brands so I may grab a Skechers next year if I can. In terms of opinion, I don’t hold any brand in a higher esteem than any other really. They all have good and bad running shoes and some suit people better than others…..
Your 2/10 effort, easy run is at a pace that I'm working towards achieving on my 12/10 difficult runs lol.
It's all bits of progress. Not all that long ago I was running that pace as a max effort 5k, but with consistency and time, my fitness has improved. Stick with it, keep running and you'll be amazed how much you can achieve!
Thanks for the review! Still holding on to the quality?
No problem William. Yes shoes are still going strong, loving them for my long runs atm 👍🏻
how is the cushion?
Not as squishy as v3, it’s slightly firmer. I’d describe the midsole as a soft firmness. Not massively responsive compared to v3 but still fun at all paces….
@@LARKRunningUK thank you for the information
Great vid - I love trail running too. As you say, it can be almost meditative. Stick on some relaxing tunes (or even just listen to birdsong/sounds of nature) and you can almost feel like your in a movie. You did say it but on the injury front a couple of things to underline. Until you get used to trail running, try to keep them a little shorter than you would for a road run and carry more fule/hyrdration than you think you'll need. You'll use more energy and work muscles you don't normally so a bit like starting running for the first time it's easy to push your body too far too fast - just ease into it. Also, for more 'off piste' or longer runs it might be worth taking a small first aid kit (Harrier Trail Running sell a good one) and maybe even a small headtorch if setting off in the evenings in the later months of the year. Also, consider a wind breaker for the winter months as it can drop cold. You'll not need any of this 95% of the time - but if something goes wrong and you do roll an ankle or do something else which stops you in your tracks you'll really appeciate being 'over' prepared. Finally, be extra careful/a bit slower when you are towards the end of your run and / or tired. I've only managed to cause myself a major mischief a couple of times and both were when I was going too fast and was tired.
Great advice. I didn’t think about the first aid kit, as touch wood, I’ve never really had a mishap yet. And yes depending on the time of year extra layers would likely be useful! Thanks for watching….👍🏻
@@LARKRunningUK - a couple of years ago I fell and twisted my ankle pretty badly running along a river bank about a mile from home and had to hobble back. Wife didn't answer her phone till I was practically home 🙄😂. Could have really used something to make a splint from and a coat (evening so dropped cold really quick when I stopped running). I kept thinking that if I had been more isolated / further away it could have been far worse. I tend to think of the extra weight as 'good for training' and overpack now 😅
Hey Lark, good to check in again. I love a bit of cycling , most frequently as a commute but I'm keen to get my stamina back up over the warmer months. Its been a few years, probably since lockdowns that I've done more than say 90 mins cycling in a go. I was a competitive cyclist long ago, so I get into easily. Very similar recovery ideas, although never tried yoga. I'd add in ice packs, or rather bags of frozen peas or corn to help treat particularly sore muscles. After running, excuse the pun, into some stiff sore knee issues after the Cardiff half Marathon last autumn, I've been looking for a more sustainable routine for my veteran legs. I became intrigued by the approaches of a couple of injury prone elite runners, GB runner Elliot Giles and an an american collegiate champion, Parker Valby. Both run very limited miles but do a lot on the elliptical trainer and Giles cycles regularly. My target is 4-5 days running a week, cross train on top of that, walk or cycle the commute, etc.
Hey Aidan, good to hear from you. I need to probably do more cycling as CV wise it’ll be beneficial. Yeh it’s not rocket science, it’s best to listen to the body and adjust when needed. Touch wood, I’m managing my load well and avoiding injuries 👍🏻 You should try yoga, I thought I was flexible until I tried it. Now I think it’s probably the main thing helping me stave off niggles….
Personally I really enjoy running through mud baths in winter and spring, but safe to say my wife isn't best pleased when I come back home!
Haha yes you are probably right. The wetter it is the more fun you have, but the aftermath isn’t pleasant 😆
Does it feel heavy on foot?
No not at all. Really nice to run in and I was surprised how heavy it was on the scale as it doesn’t feel that heavy when running….
You are more organised than me. Ive never even thought about a publishing schedule 🙈 Good luck with it 👌
If I’m not organised nothing will happen! It’s a rough plan to stick to and get videos made….👍🏻
Used the Adizero Pros for the Manchester marathon at the weekend. Superb shoe that is a great balance of plush/comfort and speed
Yes Jack I believe they are a great marathon shoe. If it’s more of what the Takumi offers then it’ll be special……how did you get on in the Marathon?
@@LARKRunningUK yeah mate, they are well worth the money, even at the high price point of 220 😐. Got a PB at Manchester, 3:48:10. First sub 4 marathon so really happy! Got Windermere in 4 weeks 😳
@jackwentrunning nice work 👍🏻 exactly the same as my current marathon PB (from my only marathon back in 2022). Looking forward to having another crack at it again later this year…..
@@LARKRunningUKwhich are you going for? Chester?
@jackwentrunning yeh I’m re-running Chester to see the difference. Nearly did Leeds but Chester is just too convenient….
Really enjoyed the Sen 8s ended up picking up 2 on sale last sunmer in the green & the orange, although they arent the first shoe I reach for they always drive me forwards more than any other during speed work! Really well worth ⏩
Agree Kris. Love the response from them and will likely be grabbing more in the future…..
HOW ABOUT CUSION?? SOFT OR HARD?
Midsole is nice. Not hard, I’d describe it as a nice squish, (so softish) with a bit of energy return….
People underestimate just how tough a sub 20 5k or sub 40 20k truly is, building the stamina & fitness is one thing but the mental gymnastics when you glance down at the watch & realise you're either close or behind where you should be pace wise is mentally crippling! Don't put too much pressure on yourself it'll absolutely come, enjoying supporting you here & on Strava 💪🏽
Thanks Kris. Yes, I think physically I’ve improved and adapted, but as you say, maybe I underestimated the mental aspect. I’m calmer now, I’m a work-in-progress and will remain that way…..thanks for the ongoing support 👍🏻
Hello just bought these shoes as a first timer runner, would you recommend to go half a size up from my regular shoes since I know Nike shoes sometimes run small
Hi, these New Balance fitted me true to size. Have you worn NB before? Different brands do fit slightly differently, but the sizing on these was pretty good 👍🏻
Like the trailer, Adam. So many places I recognise. We are blessed with a great variety of fab terrain to run through in this neck of the woods!
Yes Dave, plenty of variety locally. Although I do prefer quiet country lanes and trails.
You’re faster and fitter than ever. Keep smashing it and the rest will come 👍
Thanks Lee. I agree, just need to get it done. Fairly relaxed about it now, like you say it will come……
Was after a cushioned long distance shoe on a budget. Found these for £37 on SportsDirect and went looking for reviews to check they'd be suitable - seems like they are based on your review. Thanks 👍🏻 (new subscriber gained!)
I cant push myself on my own. I need people around me as part of a race. Its not a fail, its a learning opportunity 👌
Very true Stu. I always train alone and it’s not often an issue, I was just a little short of motivation that day. I’ll learn as you say and go again…..👍🏻
Relatively new distance runner here… stumbled onto these shoes at a big box store for $48 USD. They are clearly for runners a tier above me, but I did a faster workout today and they were very enjoyable. I’ll be saving them for heavy workouts as my running journey progresses. Just wanted to share that people might see these shoes at insane prices in the short term in the right spot!
Yes, they will likely be discounted and can be found in the right places. Thanks for the feedback Ryan. I’m keeping mine back as my marathon racer for this year…..
Good luck with the pb attempt 👌
Thanks Stu. Vlog out today, it didn’t go to plan…..
I bought a pair for a great price. I agree with everything you say. Shoe is trash.
Thought I was the only one! Everyone seems to love it…..I don’t get it. It’s not very good at anything…..
Triumph 20 are great cheap as well
Never ran in Saucony, nearly grabbed a few pairs this year (Shift 2, Speed 3, Kinvara etc), but settled on different brands instead…..
Nice! I was running in Under Armour. Infinite 5 models. No money for some better MAchina Breeze models for warm weather. Some discount placed my attention on MWSR3 J1GC220981 model. First time for me. I am little bit heavy , 108kg. I like firm, low stack running shoes that are really rare in all soft trends out there. Novablast for instance get me injured. Too much wobbly for my tendons. And also I have some abductor pain, that prevents me for full range motion. I like when frontfoot part is spacy and when middle foam is somewhat firmer. On foot Mizuno looks like a tank. Firm edges. But one can never tell, unless try runing in them. Because foot itself, runner himself must know that movement through space. Middle foam won't do the heavy lifting for runner. Idk what else I could say. I shall try this model. And I hope I' ll run 3 months in them. I usually take 10k or less every day. I leave a day or two when I feel my body needs it. I wish I could have 3 shoes in rotation. To break cycle, and pressure on legs. For now it is what it is. I need better job. Anyways I appreciate thoughts shared. All the best! Clear sky and good heath running bro! Have a lovely day!
I think you’ll like these. They are very good and even more so on discount. Comfortable, firmish foam, decent energy return and don’t feel that heavy on foot. The wider toe box and forefoot make them stable and they are nice to run in. Let me know how you get on…… Thanks for watching, all the best!
Hi! Did you mount with a stabilizer as well? Footage looks so smooth for running
Hi, no mount just hand held. GoPro has inbuilt image stabilisation and for the Timewarp feature it stitches the images together to prevent jumpy footage 👍🏻
Are they roomy in the toebox? Do they fit true to size?
They fit true to size yes. There is plenty of room in the toe box, but not too much 👍🏻
I got these shows on august last year, Im a novice runner and mainly run on a threadmill at home. Today I had to "retire" them after 1060km (aprox 660miles), around 10km per day. Very good shoes for the price, the sole and external components seem to still hold very well but internally I guess they reached their limit and I needed a change. I will still use this shows for home, run errands and normal use but for long walks and runs is time to "give them a huge thanks and let them rest".
Good work! Yes durability is always a plus with these. I’ve still got mine and am using them sparingly this year, but they will probably hit similar mileage to yours. Thanks for watching!
4:23.... yes, very good for the price ! (69.90 eur) My second hand 1500v2 revlite are definitely dead now...
Comfort wise they were excellent. NB always provide comfort if not performance 👍🏻
I got on with pacing for RunThrough now! I did Oulton but the half back during Covid. Was very strange ha
Yeh I bet running events during covid was weird……I may see you at an event then!
@@LARKRunningUK hopefully so mate! I’m on Heaton Park, Oulton and Aintree a couple of times 👌
Good luck with the new spring and summer season on the way.
Yea Nigel, looking forward to lighter, longer days…..
