- Race day vlog from Chester Half Marathon 2023.
I had trained well for 13 weeks but then a hamstring injury niggle had struck during the taper and reduced my running.
This was my first official HM race and my fairly ambitious goal was sub-90. I wasn't feeling overly confident pre-race after a few tougher than expected runs in the build up.
It was another well organised race in Chester and the weather was almost perfect (maybe a bit warm for my liking). The race didn't go exactly to plan, with me adjusting my pace and it feeling a bit of a slog throughout.

It felt like a very 'quiet' race with lots of scenic parts as we got out into the countryside. It got noisy as we got back into Chester!

Good effort. Well done.
Thanks Nigel. Happy enough with a PB, and a solid HM overall. 👍🏻
Well done. A good benchmark for you as to what might be possible when better circumstances come together.
I did the Caerphilly 10km weekend before last. 42.35 or 25 depending on what measure you take. A real race of two halves, largely downhill to 5km, then about 200ft of climbing in the last 4km. Didn't feel amazing on the day, a bit light headed in the morning and faded a bit on the initial uphills before rallying. Pleased in retrospect to have run as quick on a hilly course as I had on a flat course in March. Think I got my taper wrong as I felt much stronger this week, breaking a strava PB for a hill on my long run this week.
Yes I felt the same Aidan. The 20k 4 weeks ago felt easier, and the 15k progression 2 weeks ago felt strong at a faster pace than the race. The taper/niggle knocked me back a bit somehow, but progress still. I’ll float for a few weeks then go again for Sept HM.
Good work on the 10k, especially on a hilly course! 👏🏼
@@LARKRunningUK Thanks, I'm going to concentrate on 5km for the next couple of months before a couple more 10ks. First goal is sub 20 again.
Well done bro . Currently I’m loosing weight to get into my first marathon. I’m 44 so I need to get in slowly lol
Yes just take it slow and build up gradually. It’s never too late to start running! All the best, let me know how you progress
@@LARKRunningUK I live in Wrexham so I’ve followed you on strava .
@serafettinkaya6012 you should do the Wrexham Half next year. I paced it this year and will be racing it next year….
