    hi :)
    fwiw there's nothing academic or exclusive abt the way i like this album, its just rhythmic & sonic excitement of the highest order for 70 minutes. not sure if there's anything to "get" in this case, so dont worry cus i dont think you're missing anything

      To 'get it' is to enjoy or appreciate. On a deeper level it is to understand it in our blood and bones - as essential as air and water Some don't enjoy' it overall, but do appreciate its technical finesse. So it may appeal to one part of our brain at an intellectual level, but not engage our heart, at an emotional one. As a one dimensional phenomenon it fails to involve our whole being. This is a common criticism directed at Autechre. Inhuman - angular - mathematical. Deus ex machina, machina. Abstruse - cool - hard. Unrelatable noise for nerds. (People who can't relate to people)
      AE - AI - O
      To the edge of the cliff and over we go....
      A criticism of classical and jazz or instrumental music in general, is it's long and boring and sounds repetitive. Once upon a time this is how I felt about all three .I was addicted to the melody, verse chorus verse, middle eight of the standard pop song. After a long determined grind of exposing myself to as many complex forms of music, art and literature that I couldn't stand, I cracked open the cornucopia. Now work like this, though challenging, is accessible to me.
      Anything worth having is difficult. One has to develop a talent and a skill over time with constant practice to make it second nature.
      Autechre is as natural to me as dirt.

    For me, this is Autechre's masterpiece. It's not as user friendly, but for me it is flawless as an album. Whatever, to each their own. I just appreciate hearing differing opinions. It took me 5 years to "get" Exai, but once I did it became one of my favorites of their projects. I still can't understand how I missed the genius that is tuinorizn. That is what makes Autechre the most interesting, exciting sound producer in IDM, and gives me hope that I'll eventually come to terms with Quaristice and the NTS Sessions.

    I love 'Draft 7.30', but I do appreciate that even though it's not one of your favourites, you didn't deny others have genuine joy in it or accuse them of pretentiousness, elitism, or any other pejoratives. I understand this music isn't going to be for everyone, but seeing people online claim that no one could *really* like such a "racket" / seeing accusations that others who DO like it are somehow "pretending" to like it or that their love of such music is disingenuous (!)...it can get tiring. I just genuinely love the creativity and dry, brittle alien atmospheres I'm hearing here, and for whatever reason don't really need standard, "clear" top-register melodies in pieces to find them engaging (providing that textures or other elements are doing interesting things.) Thank you for expressing your views in a respectful way! Really appreciate how even when you don't love something you address those who do with respect. :-)

    I've heard barely any praise for Draft from fans, so it's nice to hear that you have. Autechre are one of those acts that I really struggle to pick a favourite album from, but my mind seems to always go to Draft for some reason. Maybe that means it's my favourite? Fuck knows. It might be the overall liquidy sound to it that draws me in. It just flows so well.
    And I do think it features perhaps their freakiest moment, the last minute or so of IV VV IV VV VIII. So unsettling.

    • @vifcole
      @vifcole Před 4 lety +4

      I love that moment. It's just one synth chord basically struggling to play, but it's such an effective transitional moment from the rest of the track's faster feel

  • @anstromm
    @anstromm Před 4 lety +7

    I characterize the mood of this album as "comfortably anxious." It's also deeply immersive, which I love in music. It may be their densest and most detailed album.

  • @kirilbiseroski5253
    @kirilbiseroski5253 Před 4 lety +11

    For me, Confield was like creating electricity, and Draft was like biulding powerplants.
    About educated and smart listener - it is music. Just listen it and if it clicks - thats it. If it doesn't - it is listeners loss.
    About the right mood - of course. I listen this album very rare but every time it is great. If i was urged to do it ( listen this, you have to listen this, you must listen this), probably it would ruined the whole experience.
    About the emotional impact - sometimes not saying anything and keeping calm face expression touches more then crying and cursing. For me, Autechre is such staying cool in front of the evil world. I guess that many people like Autechre music like this in Draft because of this reason. Sometimes ( or better often) it is hard to keep that heroic attitude and you need something more human - then I would listen Chemicals, Orbital, Underworld or Plaid or something different.

      Yes! The secret to understanding is in the title. Also: this is the one great unfinished AE work. We are still waiting for Draft 7.30 (2.0) Though, they may release an earlier version entilted Draft 3.14159265359....... which was abandoned as incomprehensible by Booth and Brown just so Wonky Angle can decipher it for them.
      I'm looking forward to it.

    I love the vibe of this album. The textures and soundscapes are wonderful. It took me a while to get into. The reason I like it might be a lot to do with the context of it in my life at the time. I would often come in exhausted as a student after a heavy night and just let the soundscapes wash over me as I passed out.
    As a side note, it would be cool to hear some of your opinions on The Haxan Cloak, specifically the Excavation LP.

    To be fair, you need to have a very high IQ to understand Autechure's post EP7 works. The musical intricacies are extremely subtle but at times still filled with enough aesthetic charm that will go over typical listener's head. Due to their cultivated nature, they require significantly more work by the listener to fully appreciate than is typical of popular music. There is no need to have a grasp in music theory as Rob and Sean were inventive enough to throw the entire rulebook out the window in order to rewrite their own. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these highly calculated programming algorithms, to realize that they don't just sound good - they force you to think on a completely new level. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Rob and Sean's borderline-inconceivable artistic genius unfolds itself on their headphones and speakers. What fools... how I pity them.

      Geneza O-Wsianki I don’t know Autechre albums that well - but I enjoy Tommy’s reviews. I can see how the titles they give their music might fit with the otherworldly, or rather cold mechanical sounds they seem to create, but sometimes I wish the titles would give me more of a clue to the track. I didn’t think you’d find any that you might be bold enough to name a child with, but you proved me wrong! I need to keep listening.

    Man I used to agree with all your opinions on this album for months... Draft 7.30 was really one of those Autechre albums that I always resented or felt lacking, but I had no idea why. Then just today, as I'm writing this comment, it CLICKED. It wasn't a gradual shift to appreciation; It felt like some switch flipped in my head. And again I had no clue why. I still have a huge problem with how SURRIPERE fails to give a good drop, and this album isn't one of my favorite albums or anything, but I appreciate its sound more than before. This is really what I love about Autechre, and why I always consistently come back to their music. Their work is so sonically dense, every time you put one of their albums on you're gaining a new musical experience. Don't worry, I still know where you're coming from and I still think your opinion on this album is still completely valid.

SURRIPERE is the only excellent track (one if my favorites from them period) IMO, the rest are just alright. The transition from Max/MSP to hardware equipment is very apparent with the noticeable lack of textural depth compared to Confield.
