Oil Painting on Canvas - Porthleven Cornwall

  • Hello there
In this video I am oil painting on a fairly large 100cm x 80cm canvas in oils. The scene is of the harbour wall in Porthleven in Cornwall. I particularly liked the way the harbour wall sweeps out towards the sea and the morning light casts a lovely shadow across the water. That is what made me want to paint this view.
This was a studio painting based on a photograph that I took one morning when the light was bright and clear. I used canvas for this one as it is lighter to transport than my preferred plywood panels at this size. It turned out to be a very enjoyable painting after some struggles with certain areas especially the wall.
It was done over several painting sessions spread over a couple of months. I let each layer of oil paint dry before going back in with the next oil layer. I mixed turpentine with the oil paints to begin with, then as I added new layers I removed the turps and added small amounts of linseed oil or a mix of turps and stand oil.
Hope you enjoy the video - please ask any questions or leave any suggestions in the comments section.
    All the best - Andrew

That was really interesting to see your entire process. Such a beautiful picture I’m not surprised it sold quickly! Do you varnish your paintings?

Thank you. I don’t varnish them. Sometimes they have a glossy finish if I use stand oil with the paint 🎨

Wonderful painting Andrew, I was and am really interested in how you depict your rocks and rocky shorelines, brilliant……. Do you find that because of your style of painting you get through a huge amount of various brushes ?….. many thanks

Andrew, beautiful painting, love all the marks and layers! Do you oil the whole surface in between layers or just did more oil into your paint as you go? I’d love to hear a bit more detail on this! Best to you and love your videos and work!

      Thank you Tracy
I don’t usually oil between layers when it’s on canvas. I find adding more oil as I go works fine. If it’s on board I do find it best to oil between layers as it seems more absorbent

Beautiful painting.. Loved the narration. Congrats on the sale (I realize it was more than a year ago). I hope the buyer appreciates all the work that went into it. Do you actually point your buyers to the CZcams videos about the " creation of their masterpiece?.
