Oil Painting in the Studio - St Ives Bay, Cornwall

- Today we are painting with oil paints in the studio using alla prima techniques (painted first time - wet into wet). The view is of St Ives in Cornwall, looking across the bay from Mexico Towans.
This painting took around 1 hour to complete and it was really good fun to do. It will go into my next solo exhibition in October 2022 which takes place at The Customs House Gallery in Porthleven, Cornwall.
Please feel free to comment and ask questions and I will get back to you.
Best wishes from Cornwall UK
Andrew

Good to see you in the studio at work. I arrived in Truro for a week’s holiday last Monday and having heard you mention the exhibition at the Museum, it was my first port of call. I have enjoyed your YT films for over a year and loved the finished works. Great on film but even better in real life. Fabulous handling of expanses of sky, foreshore or sea with subtleties which are not always apparent even on a smart tv. Seeing the corpus of your work on show kept me occupied for several hours trying to absorb everything. Took note of five in particulate. Bravo!
Thank you so much Ian
I really appreciate your comments and thank you for visiting my exhibition 😃
Wow! Fancy being able to do that in just an hour. I really love it. The colour choices are beautiful. Love the pink in the sky and your use of violet to introduce depth. The figures are amazing and when you put in the shadows it immediately anchored them to the ground and everything suddenly becomes 3 dimensional. It’s like magic. Respectfully though I hope you don’t mind me saying that I found the two figures on the right distracting. I felt that it interrupted your lovely zig zag path through the composition to the headland as they lead you away from that. Just my (untutored) opinion!
Thanks Jennie. I will have a look at the figures on the right and let you know what I think. I haven’t looked at it properly yet since painting it. Often things get tweaked then
All the best
Andrew
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt I have just seen the painting on FB and I take back what I said! I think it works to have something in that space as otherwise it a vast of sand. It’s funny how a different viewpoint changes perceptions of things isn’t it? As an artist I guess you’re making those decisions all the time. Hoping to see your exhibition this week.
@@jenniek4617 thanks Jennie - I will have a look in the studio tomorrow and let you know what I think

Super, as usual!!! A question: what type of lamp did you turn on at the end of the video?
Thank you Henk. I will look back at the video and get back to you
It was my old easel lamp. I'm sorry but I can't remember what make but it is a daylight light which helps
Amazing I love St Ives
Thanks Denise
Hi! Really enjoyed watching you scrub and mix in color on your board. It really makes your sky and water feel in motion. Turned our beautiful and lively. Thanks Andrew!

@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Can I just ask, where do you get your plywood panels from?
I buy a sheet from local hardware store (B&Q in UK) and get them to cut it or I saw it by hand. Sometimes I buy ready made panels from Jacksons Art
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Lovely, thanks very much.
@@rikardogibola1312 no problem

Excellent atmospheric effects. Could you say what type brush used (eg at 4' 38") - seem to be soft hair - unusual for oils
Thank you Elizabeth. It is a round bristle brush. I'm sorry but I can't remember the make - I know it's not Rosemary & Co
Many thanks for info!
@@elizabethhunt5536 you are very welcome

Thank you Judith 😃
I love this painting! Beautiful colors as always. I especially love the little figures on the beach… they are wonderful and lively. It was fascinating to watch how you made them. Love the filming and the format of this video. Is so very helpful to hear your thoughts as you paint! ❤
Thank you very much Lisa
What a beautiful painting. It's such a treat to watch it come together from an abstraction of shapes and colors. I love the beautiful blues.
Thank you very much Keke
