- Plein air landscape painting in a muddy field! The afternoon light on a Winter day in Cornwall was what caught my eye for this painting. I know the area very well and it is close to home - so not too far to carry my paints and easel to the scene.
I will finish this painting at home over Christmas, so please look out for part 2 next week!
Merry Christmas to you all
Andrew
Like the video? Why not buy me a coffee?

You captured the sunlight on the distant hill beautifully. I love this painting.
Thank you very much Amanda
Looks promising already.
Thank you very much Mike
Congratulations for the wonderful technique. I wish you a Merry Christmas!
Thank you Vincenzo
Entertaining and informative as always. Just catching up after the Christmas and New Year break so still have part 2 to watch.
Thank you so much Colin - I hope you enjoy part2
que mejor que ver a alguien disfrutando lo que hace...
Thank you very much - I really love what I do and am grateful to have the chance to finally do it
Lovely spot to paint , I usually paint in busy places near to where I can park the car , I’m looking to make myself an ultra light paint box to go on a tripod so I can get it in a backpack and access some of these areas
I know the area very well. I like quiet landscapes like this. Often the coastal areas are busy with people - particularly during holiday season so I go inland more often
Beautiful piece!
Thank you very much Louise
What a wonderful Christmas Morning surprise, Thanks Andrew!
You’re welcome Deb
Have a great Christmas
Merry Christmas and happy New Year soon! Good to see you! What a pretty scene. I love the orange lit area next to the green in the background. You did a great job as always.
Thank you so much Lynette. Happy new year to you 😃

Beautiful work! It’s been awhile since we’ve seen you plein air painting and it’s worth the wait. I find your commentary really interesting and looking forward to seeing how you decide to finish this one up. Its really lovely as it is!
Thank you very much Lisa - hopefully I can get out tomorrow. We have had so much rain this week it has been impossible
Really love this painting so far, and love that you video your process and watching the way you use your brushes, so interesting. You make it look so easy, so natural. Thanks for sharing and the useful commentary as you go along. Looking forward to seeing how you proceed. Lots to be learnt. Merry Christmas
Thank you very much Caroline - I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Merry Christmas to you

Thank you 😊
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt YOU are welcome Andrew 😊🎨
Saludos!
Thanks so much 😃
Great progress in a short amount of time and changing light ... I also use stand oil mixture medium and it definitely helps lay paint more smoothly over initial layer ... Will you be going back to finish plein air ?
Thank you Nancy - I was going to finish at home but you've given me an idea to finish it on location. It depends on the weather this week but I'll keep you posted
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt that would be great ... You've captured such a nice feeling so far
@@nancykunik4370 thank you - I'm hoping to try painting outdoors tomorrow. We've had so much rain this week it has been impossible so far
I’ve got a glass palette with grey background … which I thought would help me mix values more accurately, but I actually end up mixing everything darker than it appears. How do you manage with yours?
Hi Stu.
That's a good point. I find the grey better than white for plein air work because of the possibility of bright sun on the palette. In my studio my glass palette sits on an off white cloth. I'm not sure what the best solution is.
Colours change when they go on the painting and sit next to other colours so I end up doing quite a bit of colour correction on the canvas anyway.
Congratulations for the wonderful technique. I wish you a Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much
