Liquid Charcoal - using it for the first time

  • I bought a pot of Liquid Charcoal by Wallace Seymour and thought I'd try using it for the first time in the studio before using it for plein air sketching and painting.
I chose a black and white photo of Loe Beach in Cornwall as the subject for my first effort. This area, along the Fal River, will be a large part of my work over the next 6 months as I prepare for a major solo exhibition.
The liquid charcoal was great fun! I found using it in this way very interesting although heavier weight paper would have been better as you will see!
For the drawing / painting I used:
    Liquid Charcoal by Wallace Seymour
    Accademia 200gsm paper by Fabriano
    Water
    Turpentine
    Compressed Charcoal
    A craft knife blade

Fab video Andrew ✨ ordered myself some liquid charcoal plus ink - exciting, really hope it arrives before Friday, it says the charcoal is from vines cut on the waning moon 😋 🤍

I love the way it seems to layer ! Adds depth

It surprised me how well it layered up so quickly, even on the damp areas 👍🏻

Man, that’s so cool! It looks like it’s an old antique piece of art! That paper took a beating! So fun… and looks fabulous! I’ve been trying to get back to charcoal. I’ve seen, and have painted so many ultra brightly colored soft pastels lately. It’s great to see black and white. Gets me back to feeling the tones. Very moody. Love it! Thx for sharing! - Messy Mendy 👍🙏🏻🖌👩🏻‍🎨

Liquid Charcoal is expensive. I rub charcoal on sandpaper to make charcoal dust and then mix it with Gum Arabic (cheap in powder form, just mix with hot water)

Thanks for sharing this Andrew. This was a very thorough investigation into the medium. It looks like a lot of fun. Did the liquid charcoal stay on the drawing over the top of the turps after it all dried?

Yes it dried on and didn’t come off when I rubbed my hand over it yesterday. The paper dried flat too which was a bonus 😃

That’s really interesting Andrew, do you think using a water sprayer would leave a different effect like with watercolour? I wonder if it would react to sprinkled salt?

      Hi Lesley
I would love to try salt and a water spray next time. I think it would work nicely 👍🏻

Hi Andrew, Info request from a new subscrber, In an earlier vid you used for the first time some casien paint, could I ask you the name of the supplier as I have begun liking casien and as far as I can see I can only get it from Hyettes in NY or large tubs from Jacksons in uk., Thanks Andrew and good luck. Hi Brian
thanks for watching the videos. I bought my first Richeson starter casein paints set from Amazon which were great to try it out. Now I buy individual tubes from Norwich Art Supplies online. I now know which colours I like and will use. Hope this helps - all the best.
      Andrew
