- Oil painting from a photograph using alla prima techniques painted over 2 sessions wet into wet. I painted a little 12" x 10" canvas in the studio and explain my techniques and materials in this video.
The scene I'm painting today is of one of my favourite coastal walks in Cornwall and I am often sketching along there (when not in Lockdown!). Here is the link to a sketching video where I'm using oil sticks: • Sketching in the rain ...
Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments section and I will do my best to answer.
Bye for now - Andrew

Amazing landscape scene. I love your attention to detail. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much - you're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it
No pain no gain. Taking risks can be rewarding or soul destroying but you have to take them, don't you? That's so much part of the fun and can lead to a place you would never otherwise arrive at.
That’s very true Jim. Took me a long time to realise that it’s ok to make ‘mistakes’ and not be too precious about my painting. Then I started to make progress 👍🏻
I’ve been bing watching your videos and have been enjoying them immensely. Makes me feel like I could do it 😂. Thank you
Thank you very much Paul - best of luck with the painting
Beautiful headlands. Lighthouse is a lovely, ,modest, sunlight focal point. Thank you.
Thank you very much 😃
Hi Andrew, I really enjoy watching your tutorial of the Cornish Coastline. It was very interesting to see how you built up the layers and applying wet on wet techniques to enhance the painting process. I have watched one or two of your plien air videos too but this studio process really got my attention. So thank you for sharing your process with me.
I was really impressed by your attitude toward your process when you mentioned about the things that can go wrong with painting. In particular, you commented that despite these potential issues, that it does not really matter, as: "it is only a painting after all..."
I fully concur with this thought, but nevertheless it turned out to be an amazing scene after all.
Cheers.
Thank you very much Paul
Once I learnt not to be too ‘precious’ about my paintings I feel I started to make progress. I like to stay faithful to the scene but make adjustments to suit the painting.
All the best and thank you for your support
Andrew 👍🏻😃
Beautiful artwork.
Congratulations!
Thank you very much Gilberto

Thank you very much John 😃
That's lovely
Thank you Meredith
Very nicely done, Andrew like your style.
Thanks Jeff
Wowww❤️
Thank you very much
Really really enjoyed this video - I love working wet on wet, and also applying thick paint, and random strokes. I have had a huge hiatus in painting.. lots of family stuff going on… and currently doing lots of travelling abroad now to visit my new grandson so not much time for myself. I’m now starting to really miss it and watching and listening to your videos has given me so much inspiration and got me raring to go !!! My New Year’s resolution - make time for painting 😊!! Also, would love to see your work in person, is it only available to view in Cornwall? It’s quite some way for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you very much Caroline.
You must make time for yourself and your painting. It is difficult sometimes with family commitments but they will understand.
I have my work in the Cotswolds, Salcombe and sometimes Birmingham and London
All the best
Andrew
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt I know I must, but the draw of a new baby grandson pulls on my heartstrings so much. I really miss him so much when I don’t see him, and then when I come home there is always so much catching up to do etc. I’m going to set up my painting gear in my studio (aka my kitchen) when I get home (currently on holiday with my husband) and hopefully that will encourage me even to just potter about with some paints, if not the full painting experience.
@@carolinegilbert115 that sounds great - a little bit of time for yourself every day is a great thing. Keeps it ticking over
................advertising Gamsol..............! 😊
Should get paid for that 😃
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt ....yes sire !
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt If You don't mind, what's the painting-medium You have there on table : large short bottle, black cap ? I gues it's from Kremer ,german brand . / Maybe you'll make a new video, showing us the painting mediums you work with.....
Well spotted 😃 that’s a bottle of stand oil from Kremmer. I like to mix it with turps for a thicker but very flexible medium.
Good idea for a video about the mediums. Thank you, have a great weekend 👍🏻
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Stand Oil is not too slow drying ?But ther's no dust or flying insects in the studio .
My fav medium was Venetian Medium from Lefranc et Bourgeois. But there's little too much wax in it !
Seems that Michael Harding does great mediums for painers, too . Beeswax Paste and Oleo Impasto Medium no 7 , they look great !!!!
How You use black paint?
Hi there. I use ivory black sometimes to make subtle changes in my greys and especially when mixing natural greens
Beautiful artwork.
Congratulations!
Thank you so much 😀
