MRUV 146: Catching Up and Adjusting to New Normal
Vložit
- čas přidán 17. 03. 2020
- Well now, it has been a while since my last update and WOW have things changed- WORLD-WIDE. I wanted to get this posted to catch up and then prepare for future videos as we ALL adjust to the Coronavirus situation.
More to come on that, for now this video will show some lingering projects I finally got completed.
As we move forward, most of us isolated and "distanced" from each other, I will try and do my part by posting videos to at least give you something to watch, and hopefully entertain you as well. If you have a particular video request just let me know and I will get it done.
Ok, until the next update I sincerely hope everyone is going okay and can stay healthy. We are all in this together. Avoid panic, be smart and we WILL get thru this. And for crying out loud how much toilet paper does one really need???
I'm always amazed as to how lovely your layout really is when glimpsing it again after some time - truly a beautiful layout (in the making). Stay safe my friend and take care not to get Corona (I know you have some underlying health issues). Cheers from Holland, Joachim
Thank you Joachim! I hope you and the family are well.
Well since you're taking suggestions Rob. 1) Some run-bys through your beautiful scenery 2) review some self-identified mistakes you made on the layout and how you thought through to the solutions and 3) when the time is right, an entire episode on the placement of figures and animals.
Great ideas- thanks. Sure have plenty of material for the mistakes episode!
While the rest of the world goes nuts because everything has been cancelled and there are no sports, we model railroaders only want to know if the hobby shop is still open. We also don't have to worry about anyone hoarding our supplies. Anyway, I was actually wondering what you've been up to lately since there hadn't been an update video for awhile. I figured your job was probably keeping you busy this time of year, at least until the madness started. I was glad to see the update and know that you're healthy. I look forward to seeing more videos since you're going to have plenty of time to work on the layout. Idea for future video: I'd love to see another "cab ride" around the layout with all the new scenery in place. To add something unique, perhaps switch to trackside at certain locations as the train would be passing by and then go back to the cab view. Thank you again for sharing your model world with us and stay safe.
Great idea- will do it. As I mentioned to another comment- I need to find the camera!
Love it. Thank you!
Your welcome, and thanks for watching!
Keep the flower boxes, they look good. However the two on the left are blocking the platform in front of the freight doors. Move them farther left in front of the parking spaces and it will be perfect. Nice work all around.
Totally agree, the flower boxes serve to separate parking spaces and also add some amount of "life" to the scene.
Yep, I would keep them for sure; just need a wee bit of thought before glueing them down.
Good point...I will slide them over. Thanks!
thank you for great beauty detail video on your beauty detail layout as great watching on how do things
from Australia
wish best hearth you and your family through the times
Thank you Robert! Folks "down under" certainly have been thru a lot recently- I hope you and the family are well.
Nice work Rob, as always!!
Keep that shed next to the
station and use it for the
signal maintainers supply
shed! Keep safe and keep
on railroading!!!! Oh by the
way, that viaduct scene on
the swinggate came out
awesome!!!!!!!
Thanks Scott! I do like that O&W shed....
great video rob long time no see hope u and ur family are well and I look forward to the next update
Hello, good to have a new download from one of my favorites. Keep the flower boxes. Don’t call the worldwide menace by it’s name. You Tube will punish you. Call it the Show Stopper. Until you opened it, I forget there was a swing gate there. The steam and diesel service area looks awesome. Especially with the lights on. Nice platform. Thanks for the update.
Thank you! We will get thru this, I am confident of that.
I've been patiently waiting for an update. It's looking good, real good. I like the lights on the depot.
Thank you. That is turning into a nice scene, I am happy with it so far!
Its great to see an update video. Gorgeous work as always. Looking forward to more. All the best, John
Thank you John!
Dear Stephen, i've been following you for a while and I'm glad to see channel updates and layout improvements! So many details and projects going always on. Your scenery is amazing and so well balanced between tracks, buildings, roads and nature..it inspires me a lot of harmony given the passion you put into the hobby. I'm so grateful for being your follower.
Thank you! I greatly appreciate your kind words and encouragement- it drives me to continue working on and improving the layout!
Nice to see more videos from you glad everybody's OK up there
Thank you- hope to stay that way until this is over!
Definitely keep the flowers on the right side. I couldn't tell if those on the left side interrupt foot traffic from the sidewalk area? Anyhow, if so, maybe put them in-between the light poles on the left...sort of blocking access from the parking lot, but also "simulating" the placement on the right side of the building. Just a thought. Glad to know you are alive. Keep safe.
Thanks- yeah I may reposition them, or leave them loose and keep moving them just to confuse people!!
Well Stephen it really nice keep up the good work and I hope the best for you.
Thank you- so far, so good. You stay healthy as well!
Rob Bennett, Thanks
Good to see you back doing a great work on the layout and bring it alive !
Cheers Glynn
Missed your videos soooo much 😂
As always hope you and your family stay healthy
@@MarkCroucherRC4fun Thanks Mark. Same to you- be safe and healthy!
Rob thanks for another inspirational video , still here in New Zealand , thanks for the mention. Glad your safe as well. Richard.
Indeed! I hope you are safe and well.
Flower boxs make sense and make the scene look well. Hope you are ok also Stephen - take care - Kevin.
Thank you, and so far, so good!
I’m not even a railway guy (war gamer) and I love your videos. Look after yourself and I look forward to the next update.
Thanks! Back in my high school days I played a lot of Squad Leader, Victory in the Pacific and D-Day....loved it!
Glad to see you and the family are all ok and doing well. Another great video Rob, the service area and Lake city look awesome
Thanks Neale!
Outstanding work! Thanks for sharing.
So good to see you back at it. Enjoy all your videos. Gets my blood moving and wanting to do more on my own layout.Have done two things recently, a spreadsheet listing all rolling stock, putting up catenary on my branchline area. Next more details to scenes and maybe spreadsheet on buildings on layout keep at it, we appreciate what you do.
Good work! Sounds like you are well organized and will be keeping busy.
Thanks for the video. I've been wondering about you.
Thanks- doing fine just been busy of late, then all this hits.
I think the flower planters fit the scene perfectly. Glad to see a new video from you !
Thanks! I will keep them.
Nice to see a video again and to hear that everything is going well there. europe is in a kind of lockdown and we hope that everything goes well. Greetings from the Netherlands
Thanks! I do hope all my European friends pull thru okay.
I say keep the flowers give the station character. And for the field next door? How about a small transfer shed for Over Night service. Just a small one.
Thanks Vincent. Not a bad idea on the transfer shed....
Another outstanding video Rob... thanks! You are a top shelf modeller. One suggestion that I would like to propose for a future video would be one showing us how you airbrush, brush paint and weather your models. You manage to capture the look perfectly. Stay safe.
Doug- I should, as many may be surprised that I have not been using an airbrush. My recent focus was on "fleet weathering" - getting a bunch of cars layout ready and weathered "good enough" to allow for an operating session. I am down to about 10 mins per car, give or take. Some may find the process useful.
Stephen Bennett
Dear Sir.
This was supposed to be a private communication, but i didn’t feel confortable to write to your “For business inquiries” email address. So, i will proceed and you are most welcome to quit reading now.
First and foremost, thank you for your time in producing such enlightening and entertaining videos. They are an inspiration and a guide to all of us who enjoy modeling but do not partake of your expertise and outstanding craftsmanship.
Here in Brazil we have a single producer of railway models - locomotives, rolling stock and rails - Frateschi United Industries. While Frateschi models are not comparable to foreign produced models in terms of detail, they are quite functional (not DCC ready, as far as i know) and much more affordable, for Brazil’s levels of income, than imported goods of this nature. A top priced locomotive has a BR Real price of less than R$400.00, which, by today’s crazy Dollar quotation (from R$4.00/dollar to R$5.20/dollar in less than a week) would be quite under US$100.
Currently i am building me first railway model, and it is just some rails (and a turnabout!) in a 2.1m by 1.1m plywood board (metric system here - about 7’x4’), no mountains, tunnels, cities or factories. I wonder if there will ever be any ballast in it. And, it is analogic - DC. But it makes me understand what drives people who engage in building these things. It is incredibly fun! Therapeutic, i would say. So, thanks again, even if your 1st class organizational, matrix-like, 90-degrees-angled, borderline-OCD wiring puts me control panel to shame!
On a unrelated subject, as a foreigner, i had a lot of misconceptions about the U.S. of A., specialy related to US foreign policies. I would desagree with them, mostly. Last year - 2019 - i made me 1st trip to your beautiful country, by an invitation of your DoE - of course, i could not pay for it. It was for a two week course (on the subject of defense - it seems you would prefer us knowing how to do it properly) in the middle of the desert (or so it seemed to me) - Kirtland Air base. Our intructors were... well, what would you expect of a training course in “defense”? They were scary, to say the least. But, once you would break the ice - brazilians specialty - they were really very nice fellows, and all of them made me (and me colleagues) feel very welcome in your coun
try. Why am i on this subject? The way you present your work is such that we, as observers, are made to feel as if we are with you, in your home. Sir, that is a real talent, to engage people, take them under your command. You most surely sounds like a leader of people.
Muito obrigado, best regards.
Eugenio.

P.S.: Still on MRUV 53 - but progressing!
Sorry for the poor english.
Thank you so much for your comment. And thanks for watching. No issues at all on your English- it is quite good! I am glad you had an opportunity to visit- one thing I have found in my limited global travels is that we, the common folks, are really quite similar. Yes our governments can be - well, governments- but once you meet other people and talk with them you find many similarities and can learn so much about each other's countries. We really just want to get on with life and be happy and healthy. Which I do hope you are, and please stay well during this CV episode!
@@robbennett1965 In these times of global unrest, your videos (Now watching #70) are a welcome relief from the stress imposed on all of us. Thank you very much. As (i saw, at least) north-american military people say, be safe!
Great update video, really enjoy your channel. I hope to be near your level of detail and scenery work as I progress with my layout. Thanks Marty
Thanks Marty. Take your time and don't be afraid of mistakes- just fix it and move on. Nothing I do is "right" the first time, I always fiddle and fix things.
Pardon my impertinence in making suggestions Rob. maybe you can use them, but probabbly (sic) no.
Down here in the Antipodes our country rail stations once had fire buckets on the platform. As a kid I used to wonder why they had red buckets of sand, usually filled with cigarette butts.
The green patch by the station could have a big shady tree with benches in the shade, where adults could watch kids on a playground, with the types of apparatus that Health and Safety would have removed toot sweet, but which we all grew up on.
I welcome your approach to the current situation, and would like to recognise the contribution you make to community spirit and welfare. Love that music.
Babylon sir!
Thank you, and good ideas! I will make every attempt to keep posting positive, entertaining videos.
Good! You are back again. Looking forward to new vids!
Thanks!
Stop putting yourself down. I wish I had half your skill and energy (not to mention space) to get my layout back on track. You are probably my favorite CZcams model train guy or very near the top. Even if you model the polar opposite of my modeling, lot of what you do still translates to my desert region dreams.
Nice to see you back again and a great video.
Great job Rob, as usual, I just love the detail you go to, keep 'em coming and stay well.
Thanks- will do, as long as I ma able!
Thank you for sharing.
It's been awhile love the videos and your chatting, love the station.
Thank you- I will keep chatting away! (can't really help myself...!!)
Bob from Erie, Pa. Love your vids. How about running some of those 50's trains?
Thanks Bob- we are in the same area. I will get those trains running soon!
It's great to see you back. We've just been told basically here in the UK to pull up the drawbridge and self isolate. The main problem is panic buying at supermarkets wish people would learn that there isn't a need to do that and it'll give us vulnerable ones a chance to get what we require 😊
Same problem here in NZ ........ panic buying ! Limits introduced today will help.
Dave- same here. People overreacting and buying 15 years worth of toilet paper. Fools. Get what you need for 1-2 weeks, ok that is fine. Supply chains are in good shape. I am waiting until people have their houses stuffed and can't fit any more, then I'll go an peacefully get what I need.
Keep the flower boxes at the station. They look appropriate for the era. Nice work and thanks for posting this, and all of your, entertaining videos!
love the flower beds, might move the ones on the left, the flow of people around the building could be impacted. Looks great and as always, truly enjoy your updates and how you change the layout, show us what you messed up on or did not like and what you fixed. Thanks for showing us normal people ways to do things.
That flower boxes look great! Keep them! Nice changes in layout! Enjoy it! 😊
Hi from Portugal, for us modellers the social distance is something we are used to but now it is socially acceptable. As for the flower pots on the left side of the station, I think, that looked better between the two lamps, but this is my opinion ...keep up the good work, it's a great inspiration and I think it is for many of us. Protect yourself and stay well.
As one of your British viewers I am delighted to see that you are OK and still working on your layout. This enforced time of work for me will mean that I will finally have time to erect the already built baseboards for my attic/loft layout and hopefully get the track laid and wired. But looking forward to more updates from you. Stay safe.
Welcome back Steve! Thanks for the great video, as usual. Stay safe and keep model railroading!
came across your channel last week, and love all your videos! As we are all hunkering down, its refreshing to see all the model railroading videos! Has inspired me with my layout that I am building!
It looks great my frend your a artest i cant do half as good as you but am lerning your videos are great thanks
Thank you- I bet you can do it. Trust me, if I can, I am sure you can! Just dig in and go for it, if things get messed up just try it again. I rarely get it the way I like it the first time.
Yes great to see you back.
How about another cab ride?
Can do- assuming I can find the darn camera!
@@robbennett1965 great, thanks can't wait love everything you do.
Great update. Sanity in a world of madness! Stay safe and best wishes.
ice to see you back! Akwats a treat to see the progress! And yes, the flower boxes is a nice detail and I guess those things were kind of new as prefabricated ones, maybe the station master got them to the right price and it is a bit of a way that he wants to follow some trends. They do add that little estra to the scene. Never mentioned how effectful the night scenes are on your layout, on the videos at least they are spot on. Always since I found your channel way back, I have studied your landscape projects and how well they look and I feel you have perfectly mixed the American school with the European and the results are unique. I hope that you, your family stay healthy as well rest of us who are following your channel, Cheers from Sweden!
Keep the flower boxes...the scene is awesome....love the detail you put into your engine service facility...great work as usual. Anthony
Yet another fabulous Bennett production, the layout is certainly coming along, as for the computer, invest in a 6RU data cabinet that just fits under that gap, with sliding tray for keyboard maybe :). That is how I am going to house all my computer and electronics in one area but a 12RU cabinet for me, just a thought :). Otherwise keep safe and look forward to your next few vids..
I like the flower boxes Rob - I think they fit in nicely with the era. Best, John
Nice update buddy. May I ask where your trees come from please?
Thank you. Some are from Noch, others from MBR in Poland. Pricey but very well done, and I got an order delivered just before all this broke out.
Rob your layout is an inspiration to me, I have watched it from the start and I’m itching to make a start on my own n gauge layout, I’d love to have the space you have and build OO or HO as yours is. The detail is excellent and if I can achieve half of the detail you do I’ll still have a decent looking layout. Thanks for the inspiration and continue what you’re doing, keep well, John, oh and keep the flower boxes they look great!
Hi Stephen here in New Zealand we are are in total lockdown and have been for the last 3 weeks so I am working on my N scale layout I model the Santa Cruz branch line and an unnamed mainline love your layout it really looks real thank you for showing it to us.
Glad to see a new vid. Your usual attention to detail - very much like what you did in the swing gate area. Lake City flower boxes: YES, except move the one closest to the station to in front of the first parking space. LOGIC that there should be a way to walk between platform and the loading dock area. I've never photoed a diesel service area, but by my recollection, it looks right. Looking forward to more.
Robert- yes, I will be relocating the boxes per many suggestions. I hope you are well out on the "left coast". I just saw all of (?) CA is now to stay inside?
It's been a while and worth the wait, thanks for another great video.
Great to have another video from you Rob. Always happy to see whatever you've been up to as it's always an inspiration, though it sometimes leads to expense as I think, "oh, that looks good. I could do with some of that on my layout"! ;-) Still unclear what's going to happen in the UK, but some uninterupted time on the layout would be welcome. Keep safe where you are. Cheers
Thanks Davie. I don't think we really know what will happen anywhere. Let's just stay inside and play trains...it could be worse! Please stay safe and healthy in the UK!
Was wondering about ya bro!
Thanks- still here and kicking.
I think the flower planters are a nice touch. Great update.
Thank you- I will keep them.
As always Rob, it looks awesome!!! So jealous of you to have such a large layout. But anyhow the station looks great. I enjoy how you layout foundations and some more or less construction techniques when you do your structures instead of just setting them on your layout. As someone who is pursuing a job in the construction industry, I plan on implementing similar techniques into my future layout. I know you may have gotten this request for a video a bunch, but one with like different types of trains, freight and passenger, that might be seen in an ops session. Like having a local run by and give the name and I guess some facts about it. Or like how you set up your ops sessions and the different types of trains that can be seen throughout.
Thanks for keeping a "captive" audience member entertained!!
- Will
Will- had several requests for trains running, so am working on that. Thanks for watching and stay healthy!
Rob, glad to see another of your videos. Great job. I like the flower boxes. I would move the 2 on the left side over between the 2 lampposts.
Also, I think all that room over to the left could be used for longer term parking. You definitely need to populate those places.
Great work, as usual..
Agree on moving the flower boxes. And more parking- duh, why didn't I think of that! Thanks!
Rob, there used to be a caboose ice cream stand by the tracks in Lake City, you could put that there.
Yes there was- used to go there a lot. Not sure it was there in the late 1950s. But maybe....
Beautiful work, as always. Stay well!
Nice to see you back, with a great video! Thanks for the support - with the Global virus issue - and stay safe! Cheers from Greece, Dimitris.
Thanks Dimitris! Please be safe and careful over there. I really hope this passes soon and we can all get back to "normal".
Good to have you back, and a great update, I'm so glad to see that you have caught up on a number of projects.
Given the amount of work you put in to creating the underpass, just down from the Dinnor(?) I worry that you will now have to take it back to an earlier era and lose that graffiti? Perhaps you could make a case for time travel, or perhaps you are in an alternative universe, say twenty years from now when people have 'reverted' back to letting "the train take the strain", as they used to say over here. Just now in the UK they have announced that the train service is going to be cut right back just for now.
Oh I ams os confused.
Maybe add some more trees on the workshop edge too, above the tunnel exit?
Oh boy, more updates to the Bennnett railroad, great times.
"Keep well, be kind".
I have thought, as you have mentioned, about removing the graffiti on that underpass. I may see if I can carefully get in there and do so. I would love to find a photo of it from the 1950's!
A small REA freight house could work in that area next to your station. I think mail would be your best bet that can be un/loaded quickly with a passenger train
Great to hear from you rob. Hope you stay safe yourself. What a mess everything is... Here in London there are the people who can work from home and the people who have to get on with life and still go to work. I have been told to close my childcare setting until further notice so no income for the foreseeable future and don't qualify for any help.
That is terrible- I hope some help is made available. Many, many people the world over are facing just your situation, thru no fault of their own!
Hello, Mr. Bennett. I live in central Illinois. So far, I still go to work every day so I am blessed. I enjoy your videos and was happy to run across this one. Yes, it's been a while. I tried your idea that you presented some time ago where you first applied paint to the roadbed then sprinkled ballast on that...boy, that worked GREAT! So thank you!
I, too, have a rather robust gate but its frame currently prevents me from installing a bridge over a creek or a road underpass. But seeing yours I believe I can modify mine. I probably won't get to that for a while but I would gladly share a picture or two if you like...just let me know how you would like to do that.
Where are you located (generally)?
Stay safe and healthy, and THANKS FOR KEEPING IN TOUCH!!!
Spectacular brian. Stay safe buddy
all the best for you too Stephen, hope you and your family stay safe. Here in New Zealand it has not quiet hit us, time will tell :)
Another Kiwi! Thanks for watching, and maybe it will not get to you guys. I hope it does not.
I like to play with my trains while I work
Amen to that.
I'm enjoying the flowers, I say keep them there.
sounds like you have some free time on your hands. I find out Monday who they send home, which jobs are necessary and who is doing what. So with your free time Can we follow a train around your layout. so many great videos and highly detailed scene that you have, just be nice to see them as you would during a operations session. or just running.
Sparky- I hope things work out okay for you. And please stay healthy. I will be posting a train video soon.
Nice job on the apssenger station and diesel service area. That empty gon even looks great.
Thanks!
You are a great modeler. Your layout is amazing and the details are excellent. I always enjoy your videos and seeing what you've done. Very nice. The flowers at the station look good around the light poles. The only thing I would critique would be the blue led on the sand tower. I've never liked those, but it's your railroad and if you're happy than my opinion dosen't matter. Everything else is amazing. 👍
I agree on that sand tower light, but I can easily fix that. Will be doing just that very soon. Thank you for watching!
Glad you finally posted a video. Been missing you. Thanks
Thanks Joe! Will try to post more often.
Looks great Rob . Enjoyed the update
Thanks Jim!
Rob I think that the Flower beds to the left of the Lake Station Station / Restaurant should be moved further to the left down the platform away from the building. If you want some H.O. scale peeps, I could paint some up for you.
Shut up Kevin. AHHHH just kidding! Yeah, I do agree and will relocate the flowers. I could use some sitting people, for the benches....
kick ass layout!! awesome work!
Take care of your self. the Engine facility looks awesome!!!
Thanks!
I like the flower beds.
I'm always happy to watch *whatever* you put out Rob but, as you asked for suggestions, it would be nice to see clips of stuff moving. I don't mean complete running sessions; just show what you've been working on, then run a train through. The diesel depot looks great, especially at night and having it "mingle" with the old steam facilities is a nice idea. Keep the videos coming; it's a great opportunity to entertain your "captive" audience. I'm the only person I know who is hardly affected by the recent situation. Due to my health, I don't get out much these days so I'm not really seeing any difference.😬 Would be great if something good came out of all this and more content from my favourite U.S. railroad would certainly fit the bill.👍
Cheers for now, wash your hands!!
Dougie.
Dougie- thanks for watching and I will do a "moving trains" video. Please stay safe and healthy!
Rob, Nice to hear from you again. We are both grounded for 12 weeks, here in Scotland. We are social distancing due to pre-existing medical conditions, much like yourself. In fact, I could voiceover for you and no-one would know!!😀. Like you said time to do some modelling. I now actually have some n scale stuff, 3 locomotives, some wagons, track, etc. Currently scratch building a viaduct, making up kits, researching, collecting photos, books and generally having a great time messing about. I would put the flower boxes under the lights and leave the area at the end of the station building clear through to the platform. Every era has had graffiti, just different styles. 1950s graffiti might not be politically correct now for your public railroad! Stay safe and well. Rolling down the railroad. Regards Stephen.
Good to know- if I need voiceover assistance I will contact you! Stay safe and healthy.
Wahey you're back!!! Welcome back; glad you are doing ok and please do stay safe and healthy...
I have exactly those flowers I bought to decorate a hobbit hole I made for my daughter for her 1st birthday; they're lovely huh :)
Looking great mate, and cannot wait to see your next video (beard from bulgaria on a new account, btw)
I like the beard, and Bulgaria! Please stay safe and healthy.
@@robbennett1965 Haha good, cos neither is changing any time soon :D
Thank you - looking forward to your next video already.
Like the layout very realistic
I hope your staying safe
You can always go forward again to modern era.
Oh man, no please no! I learned my lesson- pick and era and stay with it.
Night time Ops!! That'd be fun!
Great job this one was a little short had to do something I don’t like to do watch a tv show and a night run would be nice if possible plus the road by the entrance must be a county road with all the tar filled cracks
LOL, yeah just about 30 mins. But I wanted to get it up so I can stay "fresh".
What is the spacing between your tracks in the service area?
I would like to some more run buys! Your RS-16 maybe.
For me would like to see a video of some trains running. That would be fun..
Got it- in the works!
Welcome back...Really missed your shows....
I even had time to spend a few winter months and Christmas in Malaysia... then running back home in Montreal just in time before the COVID19 scare...So definitely will be hunched home expecting your clips....lots of fun coming up!

Thanks Andre, I will check it out!
Hi from the UK, a quick question: back in MRUV 129 you were replacing a ME turnout with a Peco one. Have you stopped using Fast Track ones?
Your swing gate has been in use for some time now , how is that working out for you?
Oh! I asked to soon.
