MRUV 127: Hiding the entrance to Staging

  • I worked on the front embankment, which hides the entrance heading into staging. I would say it is about 90% complete- needs a lot of trees and some additional small details, but for now it will suffice as I need to move on to other tasks!
    I did use some of the MBR scenery items that I purchased- these came from Poland. I like these products! They remind me of the Silflor/Mininatur items. I also used items from Polak, Model Scene, Heki and Martin Welberg (Scenic Express). And of course Silflor- tufts, grass strips and Filigranbusche.
    Now to tackle the water areas- the catch basin, runoff, stream, etc. I should then be able to place the large industry in this "corner" area. Then move onto the other side of Fairview and over to Sharon.

    Stephen, Very well done. I for one appreciate the drain, the dead tree and the weed. There is an overall uncontrived feel about the scene you have created.Regards Stephen.

    Stephen, WOW! First of all that looks outstanding in my opinion! I have to say you have such a calming voice, and I love your sense of humor. I particularly like the drain pipe coming out of the wall, leading down to the lake area, putting some water around the pipe will surely look spectacular. Thanks for doing what you do, I really enjoy your videos, and of course your humor! LOL!

    One of the most realistic sceneries I've seen. Thank you for pointing out that WS clump foliage is not the most realistic product. My opinion as well and you have given me great alternative products.

      Thank you. The WS products certainly have their place, but there are many other products now-a-days that I feel do a better job of capturing the "vertical" nature of scenery.

    Rob~can I make a request? Been so long since we have seen any operations going on. When Steve comes in for the Christmas break, how about the two of you actually filming some serious trains running? I am sure we would enjoy how all the new work has paid off in seeing shoving some cars around... And for me- don't forget the steam!

    Looking great Rob! I love all the dead foliage that will be in place under and around the trees.
    The spray 3M made me laugh. Who hasn't done something like that before? I once worked at an automotive machine shop and had just fixed my morning coffee with the exact amount of cream and sugar but it was still too hot to even sip yet. I sat the Styrofoam cup down on the work bench and reached back into my tool box. I turned back around just in time to realize that a small amount of mineral spirits was still on the metal bench top and watched my coffee leap off onto the concrete floor. By now my cup was nothing more than a Styrofoam pipe! About that time my shop buddies were roaring with laughter. Turned out that they had all done that at some point themselves.
    You gotta' have stories to tell the grandkids about. Cheers, Dan

    Rob, If I recall correctly, back in the late 50s and into the 60s the NYC used crushed basalt in Northern New Jersey. That was a bit darker than your grey ballast, so you have a prototype reference if anyone complains.

    Well done, Rob! I am always amazed at folks who can just "see" these things in their mind, then lay it down on the layout. Your emphasis on verticality (if that's a real word), has made me pay more attention to road- and hill-sides - and sure enough, the ground foam just won't make it anymore. I now find myself pouring through the Scenic Express website and others. Thank you for the inspiration.

    • @robbennett1965
      @robbennett1965 Před 5 lety

      Thanks Pat- and I completely agree- Verticality is very important (should be a new work for scenery!) Scenic Express does a great job and has much of what I use, I just wish they would import a few other European MFG's lines. Mostly Polak and MBR. There are also other Silflor items they don't import- such as the Filigranbusche.

    The opening image - just brilliant, then 0:18 - looks like Christo wrapped the rockface. Brilliant. Oh boy - this is going to be fun.
    Finally got a close up on the Amish (?) horse team in the field 6:13, yay. They have been in te corner of my eye for a few weeks now.
    Um, but that little culvert, shouldn't there be a ditch/drain at the base of the retaining wall - I'm sure there will be. (20:56 - boom).
    11:25 watch out teddy bears everywhere… [No they are safe this time].
    12:42 I'm sorry but I laughed out loud, brilliant just brilliant.
    But you should fire your stone-mason, he installed his stonework upside down. Big blocks go at the bottom, they are heavier and harder to lift!!! I guess though that he just had to grab the nearest stones fast to avert the great 3M styro-foam melting disaster of October 2018. It was a bad year for that sort of thing I hear.
    Otherwise at 18:30 it looks great. And at the end.
    I can't wait for the ent-farmers to move in bringing in their herds of trees, all over the layout, but I know they take time to do that, and a lot of discussion.

  • @DrewToner
    @DrewToner Před 5 lety

    You've done an excellent job sir! Your scenery is just fantastic, but it's clear why people use ground foam and static grass. I'll bet you got a hundred bucks worth of product on that little pink out cropping!! Well done and beautiful of course, but a bit costly I'm sure!!
    And yes, that is exactly what the real roads do. We run down a 2.4% grade, for about 8 miles. On the hill side, there is a ditch basically running along the track. And about every couple hundred feet(or so) there is what looks like a big 45/55 gallon drum submerged in the ground. And on the cliff side, there is a big 2 ft. dia. (about) culvert, running down the hill. So any water that starts flowing from above, will end up in the ditch, then run downgrade to the next vertical barrel, down the barrel and under the track! looking forward to see some trees on that bluff! I'm kinda partial to Pine trees, but I'm sure you don't see many of them back there!
