MRUV 140: Layout Shakedown Session

  • Time to operate! I held a small group session to shakedown the layout- run trains, operate turnouts, find issues, and have a little fun. Six friends came over and helped me try and break the layout.
It was a good session, and I even tried a little bit of operations by staging several trains and making up some simple switch/task lists for a few positions. Overall the layout performed well.
In the video I show some of the preparations made for the session then a summary of the issues found. I need to work more on the operating scheme and inter-train logistics and routing of cars, but it was a great start and the basics are now set. I didn't get any video of the session and only one picture as I was so busy explaining things, taking notes, talking, etc. Now that the layout has passed the stress test I will make some "railfanning" videos on the layout.
We did uncover an issue with my new Rapido FA2. The lead truck on an A unit was dead. It turns out the black wire from the truck to the decoder was not soldered on. The rear truck got power, but the front was indeed "dead". I resoldered the lead and the unit is working fine.
I included another plug for our upcoming NMRA Division 12 Mini-meet on Sept 14th, 2019. Please check it out here:

Looks great Rob, so glad your hard
work is finally coming to fruition!
Once you get a working switch and main line train list set you'll
be able to run the wheels off your

edit: I`d say a success as one would expect a few issues and lucky to find that loco wire failure. The regional map at the end truly brought the layout in to the real world of the railroad operations. As usual impressive & well informative Rob, cheers ken

if you'll get a thin, and small piece of aluminum angle, you can attach that to the top of the plexiglass over the 64" coaling facility, it will take the bow out of the plex for one thing, AND the lip of the angle will give you a place to close pin notes and or car orders, etc.
really enjoy watching your videos. keep 'em coming and keep up the good work.

    Hi Rob,
I've been following and watching long before the rebuild began.
I am quite amazed at your work with the rebuild.
Your layout is sweet I am in be love with the turntable and engine facilities. I also love the coal dock being straight forward.
You've done an excellent job on the craftsmanship as well as the overall engineering construction and overall planning of your beautiful layout.
The few bugs you have are minor compared to the distance you've reached on this beautiful layout.
Thanks for sharing. Please do work up an OP session. I will continue to watch
I did hear you breathing a little harder. I just pray for you that your illness dosent keep you away from the hobby you love so dearly. I wish you well

Rob at 15:12 about the reaching issues. I found that buying a pick with the hook style head removing the handle with a wheel cut off tool then drilling a hole in the same diameter inside a 12 in wooded dowl worked great for reaching and uncoupling cars at a far inset distance. I used CA in the dowl working the steel part into the hole held strongly. Don't know if this idea is any help but I've been watching you from the very beginning. I will say your smart and your work is genius sir. Anyhow it worked for me on my old layout. My new layout is designed 2ft too 3ft in depth now but smaller for what I operate. A lot of switching more so than just massive long running trains. But it's just me now lol. Any who, great video as ALWAYS and can't WAIT to see more of your amazing progress sir.

For your door / track alignment issue, I saw a neat idea from Gerry Leone. He had a horizontal screw mechanism attached between the roadbed and track that allowed him to make fine horizontal track alignment adjustments. He left about 3 inches of flex track unballasted to allow it to float. I think he did a short video or article on it, but I can't find it.

Hi, sounds like a good time was had by all. Maybe next time you can place a couple of cameras and let them run during the ops session. Now that you got one out of the way, the operators won't mind being filmed. Unless they're in the witness protection program. Maybe you could hide the cameras and just let them run. That's sounds a little creepy. Sure would of liked to watch. Thanks, see ya later.

I've had trucks die on me even on units I've fully over-hauled...but i reused the old wiring. I noticed i'd re-solder the wire, and still be able to gently pull it off. Now if I do a rebuild, I replace all the wires.

At first, i was going to mention they have radio versions for the Procab. To add Wifi, most people use a computer with JMRI and a basic wifi router. In theory you can make your own contained unit with a raspberry pie. Pro-cab has serial connector built-in of i recall. Use a serial to USB connector to the Pi, and have everyone connect to the pi's wireless adapter.

You have a wonderful layout Rob. However, I think the only thing that spoils it in my opinion is the blue sky that shows between the steel work at Eugene, it stands out like a sore thumb, even when you are filming from the other side of the layout! I appreciate it's your model, but it just seems a little odd that a guy with your outstanding modelling skills and exceptional attention to detail could be happy with that? I do like and look forward to your video's, so sorry if it sounds like I was having a moan! Cheers...Les.
