Everything Wrong With My £500 Saab

- This week we take the Saab 9-3 from our '£500 Ultimate Daily Driver Challenge' video to Saab specialist 'Hagstrom Saab' to see if it's the end of the line for our humble 9-3, or if there's still life in the old girl yet. And maybe, just maybe, if it survives its inspection, we'll take it on a little roadtrip home....
Big thanks to Hagstrom Saab:

I think the fact that Jack is developing a ‘lead presenter’ role is fantastic. Looking forward to seeing him front and centre in the near future!
Considering Alex left Car Throttle as an employee, it makes sense.
There does need to be three characters to have the Top Gear feels, and they do need to play off each other well.
Looks like Jack's wearing some new Reebok classic trainers for this video.
Absolutely!
He has been my favourite since he came on too. Bias because he's closer to my age than Alex though
This totally needs a full restoration. And you should do a video series on it!
Definitely, had a soft spot for these since my dad had one... Would love to see a full resto!
And drives to the northcape also
YES agree! Now I want to get myself a Saab project
This guy is doing the lord's work maintaining and keeping Saabs. He also seems to know his shit very well. I'm impressed!
it really warmed my heart to see it, as someone who grew up near the saab factory it still breaks my heart that they're gone
Me jor me callo ...gilí
@@willewiking98 yeah... In my opinion the brand started going downhill almost a decade before they went out of business, after they were fully acquired by GM. They lost what made them special :( 2002 was the last good year
Should definitely do a full £4800 restore on this one . Will look awesome if in and out are fixed
definetely, all saabs deserves to be saved
@@willewiking98 Not the diesels.
diesel supremacy fuck petrol@@daanielroos
@@daanielroos Not the NG9-3s either.
checked, it got sorned and apparently resold around may 2023
I reckon Ethan, Alex and Jack (in his S Wagon) should do a road trip back to the birth place of Saab in Scandinavia with two other Saabs from Ash’s court yard of Saab’s. I’d love to watch that! 😂
Yes
That's a really good idea!
UPVOTE THIS EVERYONE PLEASE!!!
A really good idea.
I love this idea 💡
A full restoration + a winter trip through the SAAB factory to Kiruna - the northernmost town in Sweden. This would be sweet couple of episodes.
Kiruna?
@@t1mpetti oh. thx for noticing mate.. the stupid autocorrect interfered again.
Abisko would be much nicer location.
Sweden + Finland trip during winter, as they used to make the convertible in Uusikaupunki here. And a meetup at both places. Pretty sure the "Saab scene" is quite active in both countries.
@@ArktinenPeikko This one. Yes.
It’s actually so impressive seeing how far Jack has come presenting and in his confidence in front of the camera!
The banter and jokes between these two guys are absolutely fantastic to watch. Great chemistry.
I, and I’m sure everyone else would love to see the Saab fresh like new.
thats actually possible coz for the rhd saabs theres so many part outs to get spares from old police cars
Yep with added performance too
This garage needs all the support it can get!
You don’t see garages trying to save as many cars as possible a lot. A noble cause, not saying that lightly.
Really refreshing to see Ash taking such a positive approach to keeping Saabs on the road rather than just breaking them for spares. Good on you 👏👏👏
Wow, that's some fair pricing on the shop floor! If you proceed to bring it back to live please do it there to give these guys a platform to promote themselves. Every Saab saved counts :' )
I’d love to see this car have a full restoration. Perhaps, a low price hero series?
That's awesome
And obviously boost the power

Ash was a good sport here, loved his humour. Plus, he and Jack's dry humour really bounced off eachother. Really enjoyed this.
Selling my Saab was my biggest car related regret. Glad to see them being looked after and not broken for spares
I have a Saab sportswagon diesel automatic 93 that you can have for £3k I absolutely HATE this car, had new water pump, rebuilt alternator, new timing belt and had to have a new Cim. Saab is most definitely the WORST car I have ever owned.
Love seeing Jack taking a leading role, he's a natural and got a great presence. Looking forward to seeing being restored and adventured
You have to give it the works. The death of SAAB was a crime in itself. They were one of them companies who didn't give a F about the cost as long as they were making an innovative, safe and all round damn good car.
I hope that they can some how spring back from the dead one day.
To be fair you do need to give an F about the cost to continue being able to make safe innovative cars.....
@@chrispalmer5537 that's how they died. They basically made a vauxhall insignia into the SAAB 9-5 and threw more money at it than they could recoup from sales.
The car was truly amazing for the time though.
They died because they didn't give a single F about prices.. The last care they made was super fucking expensive, and very few could afford it.
Actually it's fine Saab died. It was GM that couldn't handle the Swedish. I'm a big Saab guy only drives Saab. Because they are amazing. But the newer Saab models 9-3 is not much Saab. IST 50/50 Opel and Saab. Ist still better than most cars. But not great. And if GM would down the cost more as they wanted. The Saab are just turning into a Opel. And then it will just be rubbish.
I'm fine for the rest of my life there are so many great old saab's out there for the rest of my life. So no worries here. And old Volvo is also alright.
The reason they aren't around anymore is because they didn't "GIVE A F**K"!
Companies that don't control their costs don't make a profit.
No profit and you can't keep a business viable.
Should definitely fully restore it, give it the Miles treatment
Jack is a great presenter! Kudos Car Throttle for realising this! ❤️
As a proud owner of a 1999 Saab 9-3 Viggen, seeing that people in the UK appreciate Saab and want to save them, makes me so happy.
Awesome video guys!
And if you ever go to Sweden and want to test a fun Saab, hit me up
I love the fact that you still have this little wagon. These 9-3’s are so cool. My 2010 9-3 2.0 sedan is such a fun car
I’m finding every Saab owners comment and watching the community flock here :)
I own a OG9-3
It’s not a viggen but I want to be faster than the Viggen
Two things I want:
more Jack presenting - awesome!
And a Saab fettled by Ash.
Great video. Class car..
Love seeing Jack do a video, he's a natural entertainer and very engaging. Would be good to see him do more videos!!
Props to the Saab savers everywhere! A very noble man and cause. It's people like this that make it possible for we Saab owners to continue enjoying the experience of owning AND DRIVING these cars. Really appreciate this channel for supporting that, too. GOOD WORK! Can't wait to see the road trip vid.
Nice to see Jack in the lead role, i've always had a sort of curious soft spot for Saab, would be awesome to see a full restoration/road trip with this car.
Great seeing Jack as the main presenter, he´s really good at it. I think the saab specialist should do the stuff to get it road worthy again and for other things like the bodywork, rust and stuff, I think it would be a great idea if you took it to various local specialists and showcase their craftsmanship.
Hell yes! So happy to see Jack taking on a leading member of Car Throttle role and even getting his own video now. More of this please, CT!
yes exactly, we love Jack!!!
I like Alex, but I much prefer Jack's humble personality. Can't wait until he starts his own channel.
What a guy Ash is. The Saab saviour
Absolutely! Saabs are awesome
Oooh Jacks doing a leading role love it. Always a fan car throttle keep it up. Hope your all well. Watch out for the red trucks too 😉 🤣 🙈
Jack is definitely a great host, looking forward to seeing more new content with Ethan too.
And the saab should be tuned, like fo real
Their prices are incredibly reasonable!! I would get all the work done
Jack is fantastic taking the lead. Let's see more of Jack. Good man.
That SAAB has done (and in Jack's hands, gone through) more than enough to deserve some love 😂
My father was a Saab mechanic in a small independent Saab Dealership - from the 60's through until the mid-80's. I'm a fan of Saab's and have owned two - a 9000 Turbo SE Auto and (briefly has it had issues) a Diesel 9-5.
Although I don't currently have a Saab, they still have a special place in my heart and I love the fact that there are still people out there keeping these awesome cars alive. Well done!
I love Jack's sense of humour 🤣 PLEASE go all out with this Saab, give it the full works.
Love this video with Jack taking the lead. Surely got to be a roadtrip to Stockholm once the car has been given a clean bill of health!? 🇸🇪
Weird way to spell trollhättan but ok
I bought one as an "emergency" purchase after a crash. Ended up keeping it for 3 years as it was a cracking car and sold it to a mate who is still using it as his daily 😁
Bought a second one off another friend for scrap money as a spares car. Ended up tarting it up, put a MOT on it and sold it to a third mate! Bought it back off him 18 months later (again as a spares car) then sold it to the first mate as a spares car 🤣
Massively underrated and unfairly tarnished with the "Vectra with a Saab badge" image. Seem to be getting thinner on the ground all of a sudden and it's great to see someone looking after them!
So glad to see this 9-3 again. When my trusty (not) first car ('06 Corsa) was written off this winter by someone who doesnt understand ice, I was able to buy myself an' 04 9-3 convertible with the payout, and i credit this £500 hero with convincing me to make that mad decision.
I'm so glad i did, i didn't realise at the time it would do this, but driving a car I truly care about, that makes every trip feel that little bit special, has pulled me out of a 3 year depressive cycle, given me such a confidence boost, and consequently given me the drive to get out of a dead end job and get into a job im excited about, with a 50% raise to boot.
So thank you SAAB, and thank you Car Throttle, truly.
You Should totally do the restoration! These restoration videos are so satisfying and I love the idea of keeping a good used car on the street and showing them love. Seems like the cornerstone of this channel.
Full resto would be a great watch 👊🏻
Good guys at Hagstrom, i have a lot of respect for them and very well rated in the community. Paul @ The SAAB Clinic.
I’m finding every Saab owners comment and watching the community flock here :)
I own a OG9-3
It’s not a viggen but I want to be faster than the Viggen.
Those guys are doing gods work, very glad to have people like him in the Saab community.
Jack is great, pleased he's gaining more confidence to be infront of camera rather than behind it. Legend 🤙
Good to see jack doing his own video!
Always loved a Saab, I think this one deserves the full treatment, get it back to as good as it can possibly be! It'd be nice to see some of the cars treated with a bit more love and maybe a bit more longevity to them on the channel. Loads of daft stuff you can do with a decent estate car without having to destroy them.
Can’t wait to see Jack doing more lead roles, doing a awesome job man!
Man it feels refreshing to have another lead presenter. Top video.
I would love to see more of the Saab, it just brings a big smile on my face when i see Jack talking about it and driving it.
I love that you're taking care of this Saab. These cars deserve such great love, and I'm so happy to see people dedicating their time restoring so many of them. My absolute respect!
Great job Jack on the presenting, subtle without dominating the discussion. It’s about the car not him. Give the car a new life and a road trip to the Northern lights and a tour of Sweden sounds great. Perhaps some Swedish rally roads, back to the heritage of the early cars.
Great seeing Jack doing the lead role! The Saab 100% needs to be saved, get the car back looking mint then do the usual EGR & DPF deleted & mapped out, welded inlet, stage 1 remap from TP Remapping and the car will be transformed! I have the same engine and auto box in my Vectra estate and I love it! Mines on 203k now and it’s my daily 😎
Sad to see Alex gone but I'm also excited to see Jack and Ethan take centre stage!
Love that Jack is getting more screen time. He’s always been my fave!
This Saab clearly isn’t ready to die, even without your love. I say spend the coin and get it safe, do the remap and enjoy driving the legend. It would also benefit from changing the transmission fluid. I have a 2001 Aero convertible with 32,000km on it which is a time machine. It is like driving a new car. Saab’s are not so popular in Australia but are worth saving.
Not hugely popular but we still drive them here in Oz :)
Seeing Jack as a presenter is awesome. I'm so happy and i hope we can see videos frequently.
I'm hoping you can bring the Saab to mint condition and then go to Northern lights👌🏼
But I want the full trio there!
A top lad that! Very nice seeing one rescue old Saabs! Love the episode. I hope we can see a part 2 of this!
Jack pulled that off well 👏👏
I really enjoyed Jack taking the lead on this one. Fingers crossed for more :)
Really happy to see the mighty Saab back on the channel. Please do the full restoration on it. Lovely to keep one going!
Seeing Saab content always makes me smile.
Had to sell my 9-5 wagon back when fuel prices went up, and I've been regretting it ever since
Love to see Jack have an episode, freaking legend. Great job!
As someone who owns a Saab 9-3. They are amazing cars! Its great seeing huge channels paying attention to them
I was around Saab's all my younger years, my uncle had several, a 99 Combi Coupe, a 99EMS and a 99 Turbo...say it quietly, the EMS was my favourite. Lovely and clever cars...Should still be with us!!
Love this video, not least because we've had five Saabs from Hagstrom. Ash knows literally everything about Saabs. Awesome work.
I had one some years ago and loved it. A really cool bit for me was resetting the clock for Winter and Summer time. It was one button to press and it set it using the radio signal. A lovely car with the best seats in its class. I hope someone out there is still loving it!
Well done Jack, great presentation on the video!
The video I’ve been wanting for ages. Jac doing his own video, definitely went well mate, look forward for more to come. You should definitely get it like new bud
Love seeing Jack leading a video. More of this please 👍👍👍👍 you're a natural. Also can't believe this car is still kicking
I would love to see the Saab restored. The idea of a trip sounds amazing.
Great to see Jack taking a lead. Fix it up for £5k and do a giveaway!!!
I have been waiting for this video for ages. Love Jacks Content
Absolutely fantastic video!! Great to see a solo outing for Jack.
Finally some Jack content :D now we only need Jack's project car. *Whisper* E36
Could do another thing like they did with Phil and try and get Gareth to help him do it
Full restore for sure.
Considering Alex and Ethan got rid of their cars from that challenge within 3 months, and Jack has kept this for 2 years, I think its worthy of it. He keeps saying how much he enjoys it and it'd be a waste to bin it for laughs. Make it a series with Sam in on it, like Adam from Volkstechniks with the 3 Series Compact.
Then a road trip to Sweden for a Saab/Scania meet. Would love to see your take on their back catalogue, cars and trucks, and some conversations with passionate owners...especially regarding some of the vehicles' oddball features.
I've loved seeing glimpses of this Saab in the background of shots during the last 2 years, its been one of my fave cars you guys have had on the channel and just knowing it was still soldiering on in faithful service is one of those little things that added to your videos Enjoy it so much so, when I needed to buy my first car, I went looking for one (they're spenny out here, $25k for one with over 200,000km on the clock).
Back in the day (1982 - 2007) I had four Saabs - a 99 Combi Coupe, a 99 saloon and two 900i. Loved them all.
Give it the works! Never owned a Saab but where I’m at I see a lot of them on the road still. It would be amazing to see this wagon fully restored to its former glory!
full restoration!!! jack you are doing amazing mate
Saabs are great! My first car was a 08’ 93 2.0T and I still have it! By far my favorite car I’ve own and have owned. Hopefully you guys will spend the money to save this Saab!
Love to see this car restored... your lucky to have a shop like this in the UK.
As a fellow owner of one of these early ones (an '03 Vector petrol) for the past 10 years, they're amazing cars and this one deserves the love, especially considering what it's been through....
Also, Ash seems like a great guy, I'm sorely tempted to get to the UK somehow so I can pay his shop a visit.
Definitely would love to see the Saab live on👌
Fix it, tune it and take it back to its home on an epic road trip! 👍
I really enjoyed this episode. I’ve admired SAAB from a distance. I’m not saying I’ll get one, but it’s now on my radar. Please do a full restoration!
I had a 93 wagon a few years ago. It was the V6 Turbo Aero with all the Hirsch performance bits fitted from
factory. I loved it, and miss it.
I truly believe Jack should be lead presenter now. Back in the day he was one of the quietest but remained the funniest with his one liners like "toffee toffee" etc. Wish Alex all the best and definitely watch his new channel but make Jack the lead presenter please! P.S also he is deffo overdue a decent loaner
What’s this about a new Chanel?
@@jammasterflash9448 Autoalex
I would love to see the full restoration, if you can afford it. You are a great presenter Jack
Good video. Have always had a soft spot for Saab. Was very sad when they closed down, but good to know there are enthusiasts doing what they can to keep them going. Hope one day I own a red 900 turbo 🤞
Yes please keep the Saab alive! Brilliant seeing Jack being a great presenter too
Jack is more comfortable that I was expecting...
as someone who was a Saab specialist tech, i grew to like the petrol Saabs, but the 1.9 Diesels always gave more grief. Swirl flap issues, EGR issues, DPF regen failures etc.
But they were still nice to work on.
I love my 8v, even if you cant tune it as high as the 16v. But no swirl flap and dpf, and i have blocked the egr. 200.000 miles going strong :)
@@oscarmathia6112 yeah those are getting a bit rarer, I only ever saw a couple when I was a saab specialist a couple years back.
and as you said, swirl flap delete, egr delete and dpf delete and remap will actually be cheaper than replacing the intake manifold and swirl flap assembly.
@@rotary_turbo99 nothing to do with Saabs, but 👍🏻 for your profile pic, big fan of ATHF!
GM common issues, same as on Vauxhalls?
swirl flaps, egr, dpf problems are pretty common on every car. Otherwise The Fiat engine is a damn good one.
Love that Alex is off on his own and we still keep Jack and Ethan
Best of both worlds
Double the content
I love that Jack's been maining this Saab. Love to see it
can confirm saabs are a fire hazard, had an electrical fire in my saab 9-3, part of the interior is black from the smoke, but it seemed like nothing was damaged at all except the panel under which the wires were located
If you fancy the cup holder in the 9-3, try the one in the 9-5; that's where all the space technology went. :) Great show, as always!
The 9-5 one is more refined, doesn't come out like its about stab you, I reckon they gave the design job to some intern who wanted to work on something more complex and was out to prove a point, same goes for the air vents.
Big thumbs up for the guys that keep Saabs on the roads, prices are pretty decent! Thanks for a good video!!! This Saab should live long, please save it!!!
The Jack presenting car throttle experiment is great success 🙌
Great to see a company looking after these motors, they're going to be very very rare real soon, and they pretty much are already. What a shame that Saab's motoring arm folded and in 2022 it's China who's getting all the money and custom. Saab's were unique and paid some serious homage to their aircraft design and engineering. Can't think of anything else quite like them.
Enjoyed that. Go for the full resto and stick some serious miles on her.
As a lover of all things SAAB (i had plenty, even raced them) I loved this episode.
What a great guy Ash seems to be, right level of humour and seriousness, and seems very knowledgable and reasonably priced.
I actually don't own any Saabs now, but my son has taken over and have a few, including a TurboX.
Please do atleast the cheap repair, the expensive one might be a waste of money, and do a roadtrip to the SAAB museum in Trollhättan, where you can se everything from where it started to the prototypes that was going to be produced if SAAB had survived
Absolutely want to see that get restored to factory fresh and return home! We were a family of SAAB’s before they went bust. Amazing cars, place in my heart for sure! They were my childhood.
