As an ex Saab mechanic/end lover, I am so glad this car found its way to you. Very few people would have given it all it deserved, So thank you! The Turbo Edition was a limited edition that was effectively a diesel, with all the top spec Aero goodies. The rubber spacer you found in the boot was one of 4 delivery tools that fit in the road springs during transportation to the dealers when new! You have created a unique bit of history here! 99% of diesels were company cars that really racked up the miles! Hopefully this car will go to someone who appreciates it. Saab have a thriving owners club, so personally I would get in touch with them, because these cars have a strong following, and the club has fastidious owners who will pay for the right vehicle! And this is THE RIGHT VEHICLE!

Not wishing to piss on any chips, but wasn’t this fitted with the same diesel engine as a Vectra of the day? I seem to remember these being called a Vauxhall in a Swedish suit, but please correct me if that’s just hearsay, and these are actually a true SAAB.

@@rogerwredford Had a 2006 via Lookers GM Dealership in Ellesmere Port Cheshire, absolute fuckin nighmare, literally handed the keys back to the manager and demanded a full refund!! NEEDED , Deep breath , dual mass clutch and flywheel, Both front coil springs, all rear brakes, pads, discs, and new head infotainment head as Saab called it, and the final insult a full set of diesel injectors!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I agree he's too honest for his own good. Sometimes with older cars you need to decide what they are and what they aren't. Most people looking for a car 10years or older are looking for a mechanically sound and reliable car if it's pretty too thats a bonus. Unfortunately as soon as you get into minor body repairs you're trying to make it what it isn't. And paying out a lot of money that you're realiistically not getting back. Unless you can do the repairs yourself.
I'd have paid £3500 for a TTid or an Aero in that condition and milage but wouldn't spend money on tarting it up. But a TiD that's not Ulez complient slow and has GM gremlins to contend with that car wasn't worth 2K let alone £3.5k. For that money you'd buy something better
With easy accessible parts.
I sold my 93 Aero because when it went wrong it was taking weeks to get parts like alternators and intercoolers. For a daily driven car to get to work having it off the road for 2 weeks at a time is no good.

How on earth does a car end up in such poor condition on such low mileage? Always amazes me that people are so careless with their possessions. Matt commented "what a shame, this was someone's pride and joy at one point". I was thinking the exact opposite! This was clearly owned by someone who literally doesn't care about cars one tiny bit. @@Alexander_l322 I read that these don't have as much GM bits on as you'd expect. Like I think the HVAC system was notably NOT a GM unit. This and their insistence on vaguely overengineering anythign safety related meant that it was kind of the worst of both worlds, at least financially.
@@RichO1701e Maybe only 40% shared with the Vauxhall Vectra but even more parts were shared with Opel and Holden Astras and the Cadillac BLS. The Saab 9-3 was fully integrated into the GM Global Epsilon 1 Platform. Furthermore, the shared parts were the big cost items such as the chassis/floorpan and drivetrain - engine, transmission, diff, steering, axels, suspension etc. They may have only been 40% of the number of parts but they represented closer to 70% of the cost of production.
This has become one of my favorite channels and my favorite car channel by far. Keep up the good work, your honest and down to earth reviews of the cars you buy and storytelling are a rare quality.

I run a SAAB 9-3 Sportwagon 08, 1.9 TID manual 150bhp, now on 190,000 miles, been well serviced every interval since new. It runs a dream. Had driver seat re padded it's even comfier now. Cruises well.
Terrible in 1st & 2nd, but rolling turbo fun in 3rd & 4th sleep many cars.
Love it & will keep as long as it goes.
Finally, this is my favourite video type amongst your content, massive respect for ignoring the mounting costs, and ploughing on to the glorious finishing line. Well done Matt.

My dear departed dad was a Saab man. I love them. So many memories sat next to him in a few different models.
I ran SAABs for decades and loved the reliability and quirkyness of them..Started with 99s, then 90s, 900s and finished with 2 9000s, the last being a 9000CSE Turbo.. The seats were very comfortable.👍...
Love what you’ve done with this. The car tells a sad story for me, it looks as though it was owned by an elderly gentleman who’s driving skills were sadly waning in their last years as a driver and either they themselves or maybe a family member said enough was enough, this would explain the state of the bodywork for such a tiny mileage.
This happened to my dad in his later years, me and my wife told him that he really shouldn’t be driving as he’d end up killing himself or worse someone else. This was after he’d written off his last car. He never got another.

On the same thread, what about Lancia? I really do miss the brand diversity we used to have. With Stellantis every car seems to be a rebranded Peugeot or Opel nowadays

I have 2008 2.8 V6 Aero with 40k on it. It was my elderly neighbours who owned it from nearly new (dealer registered). Sadly he is no longer with us but his spirit lives on as it now sits proudly on my drive. Ive owned 7 saabs so far but just two at present.....

There’s something about Saabs. I had a 9-5 2.3 for a while, back in the day, and it was lovely. Comfortable, quiet, roomy, reliable, quick enough, and there was something about the interior…everything was exactly where you’d want it to be. Banging ICE too. I’d have that car again in a heartbeat. I wish I’d never sold it.
For reasons that I think nobody can explain Saabs are just unique and different than anything else. I have had a few over the years and 5 months ago I bought a 55 plate 93 aero convertible with 156k miles on the clock but it still runs like a dream (touch wood). If you take care of them they super reliable.
Good review Matt, saving a great car, I love the dashboard lay out easy buttons where you need them and no menu's to wade through to heat or cool your seat. Always love your channel for the past god knows how many year's.
I had a saab 93 convertible and loved it.
Looks great now its finished. A museum piece almost. Also, never fall out with Jimmy. He's incredibly good value for money.

Absolutely loved pre-GM Saab's. There was an old episode of Top Gear last night (from 2012) when they announced its departure. Hopefully, this will go to an enthusiast who'll cherish it.
I think you did exactly the right amount of work on the Saab. Your asking price for it looks quite reasonable compared to others being offered on eBay. It's a much more special car than your low-mileage Golf in my opinion.
I love the way that you will put so much into bring a car up to such a good standard even if this diminishes your profit to a level where so many other car dealers would just not see it as worth it. You really care….and as such you stand out from the crowd. Great video…..and lovely motor.

I find it so cool that the same company that was making airliners made cars. Yes Saab made some aircraft. The most popular being the Saab 340.
In a different life I worked for Saab as a Business Development Manager - I was based in my local dealership and sold into fleets. It was at the time when the 900 became the 9-3 and the 9000 was replaced by the 9-5. It was great fun and we were delivering cars to fleets all over the UK from Inverness. The private buyers were split into two general types of people 1) Bearded cords wearing hippyish geography teachers and 2)doctors, dentists and police officers ( safety driven buyers ) . I have owned two classic 900s and a 9000 over the years . Great cars . Glad you have this 9-3 back to as new.
Saab City was located on one of the approaches to Tower Bridge in London and was a significant dealership supplying many a new model to individuals in the nearby City of London. I would not be surprised to find that they were a top dealer for models like the convertible. For those interested in Saab the GB club will be present at the NEC classic motor show from 10th to 12th November. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in classic motoring. Thank you.
In a world full of cars that look and feel the same, especially with a huge 'variety' of mundane electric models, I for one, miss the unique character of Saabs. Not always my 'cup of tea', but you could never describe them as boring. How refreshing! Well done for bringing this example back to life Matt!

As a swede it is nice to see this car restored, they are one of the better saab's made and sold pretty well over here, so in this case it sounds like you could have saved a bit of money importing parts from sweden, my dad drives one (petrol) in the same colour over here so I know what the parts cost ;)
Sorry but completely disagree I've had 2 99 & 2 900 and you're saying the 93 that's made by GM is better than the original brand??? Bought a 93 for my than wife, had nothing but problems.
@@freddythefrog70 I've had a few more saabs then that over the years. There was always lemons with all models, but so far my dads 9-3 has not had a single issue for 10 years, my old 9-5 was on the other side the one with the most issues, had plenty of 9000 and they were pretty good but rusted away. The old 900 was good I'll give you but you cant find them anymore.
Big Saab fan here. Fab cars and that one now looks superb. Like you say shame it’s not 2.0t aero petrol. Beautiful colour though. Another great job Matt.

I had a 2001 Saab 9-3 turbo convertible many years ago, it was actually great, and it was the first Saab I had driven, was quick and different to then normal German stuff. Shame Saab isn’t around, I think these have aged decently, a nice alternative to the usual German brands that you could pick up for peanuts.

@@jannes9945let's rephrase that to Japanese and french Executive saloons don't sell. There's countless examples of this from Peugeot lexus Toyota Mazda Citroen etc etc. the Germans have such a foothold on that market now and before that it was ford mostly maybe a few vauxhall senators too

I always enjoy your videos, but I love these super low mileage finds. I grew up around the car trade and used to love being at the auctions at Leeds, looking out for something special like this! Great stuff. Also walked into a couple of tow bars. Many things to be learnt at car auctions 😂
i had a 9.3 as a courtesy car many years back and really liked it - a left field choice of car that could have been on my shortlist! You spared no expense with this one and restored it to its former glory so it should be good for some years to come although really needs driving now after years of just standing around - hopefully there is a SAAB enthusiast out there who will take a shine to it.

My significant other was looking for a car when we were just out of college. We went to a lot, and she said "what that one?" regarding a dark blue SAAB 93. We test drove it, she insisted it was the best thing she had ever driven. I was doubtful, but then I drove it and was instantly converted. 10 years later, she's on her second SAAB and I now have a 93 2.8T XWD Fusion Blue Wagon.
From a car that spent its life in the garage....kissing walls....to a showroom finish . Real nice transformation.
Matt I truly envy you this car and as a Saab owner since 2008, I really appreciate what have you done to save this piece. 10 years ago I bought mine 9-3 with only 34k miles on the odometer and been driving it since. Decided to keep it even when I moved out of the UK. It is such a shame GM decided to kill this brand, but it is still very much alive thanks to very active Saab scene. I am sure someone will notice the opportunity to buy this gem.
GM didn't kill the brand in 2010 they sold it to Spyker who at the time were in F1 having bought the Jordan now Aston Martin team and they also made luxury supercars in Holland. It was in Spykers hands they started getting into difficulty. If GM had never bought them in the mid to late 90s possibly they may still be a manufacturer as they certainly went down hill. My 1st was an M reg 95 ish 900 2.0 se Turbo convertible pre GM far better than both 93s I owned and still own 1 by far.
What a fantastic job, especially the paint. You're not alone in missing Saab. I picked up a 2010 petrol convertible earlier this year and also probably spent too much money trying to sort everything out. It was a one owner car, so thought it deserved some TLC. I planned to just use it in the summer and garage over winter, but I am enjoying it so much, I'm still driving it. Very sad Saab isn't around any more.

condition it deserves! And after owning my 2005 Saab 95 estate, I still enjoy driving it, and like you mentioned, the seats are so comfortable! Like your approach on cars you buy, unfortunately you don't have a Crystal ball, but you do have the balls to take a chance in the first place! 😄

You definitely did the right thing with this car even with the Masooof overspend 😁 on a separate note I’m going totally left field with an old Saab 93 convertible my mate gave me it’s pretty bashed up on the outside but I’m keeping that style ! It’s mechanically sound so I’ll do all the necessary bits but then I’m going to fit some Carlos Vandango super wide wheels some colt severs lighting Recaro bucket seats and drive it like a hooligan….a 60 yr old one at that 😂

I think your price is VERY reasonable, considering the mileage and the fact that it's a Saab, the engine will probably be good for 200k+ miles, assuming it is looked after.
I think the engine is from a line of diesel engines that are found on a number of makes of cars. However my mate told me it was still on of the best diesels engines on the market. He had the 1.9 diesel saab with the twin turbo. And i suspect this carhas an aisin torque converter auto box. Toyota own part of aisin and use thier autoboxes as well.
It's a GM engine, also found in Astra and vectra of same era. Mate of mine has a 59plate TiD 93 wagon. Currently on 194,000 miles
@@BigTedsBoogieBox The engine is from FIAT and, unlike many things FIAT, it's extremely reliable. I live in the Balkans and the overwhelming majority of cars driven here are over 200,000km on the odometer. Naturally, only cars that can withstand some abuse end up here and cars with this particular 1.9 diesel are abundant. They also fetch a slightly higher price than cars from the same model with a petrol engine.
Very nice great colour 👍There was a later version which was a slight facelift out for MY11...the final fling for Saab/Spyker. Revised headlights, grille badge, SAAB lettering on bootlid instead of badge and a few other minor bits and bobs.

Great video. Alot of money spent repairing the saarb. But it looks really good .who ever buys the saarb.will have a Bargain. They run for ever .....p.s look for a .RS 2000 Ford mk2.twin head lights .that make a good video great car ..should of kept it . Look forward to more videos
Good knowledge, another small touch is they upped the 2.0t areo from 210 to 220bhp! My father owned a 2007 93 Areo v6, face-lift interior, Og Exterior, was lovely, a shame the Average mpg was around 22, and the tax was 500 and something, probably would be closer to £700 now.
Allan, I'm on my seventh all-93s Carlson v6 AWD, Viggen stage 4 convertible, now driving MY11 Griffin Ttid one of the last, I'm in my seventies so it should last me out.

@@Afraz_9n3Saab only ever managed to sell about 120,000 cars per year. With all the modern compliance/regulatory requirements (homologation, crash testing etc) there was no way Saab could cover its fixed
Costs. (Including relatively high manpower costs in Sweden).

You've saved a future classic. SAAB carefully ignored the GM accountants when they bought the company (even though it was more or less based on a Vectra shell) and continued to make distinctive desirable motors that even now catch your eye as they increasingly rarely drive past. Good piece of work and I hope you get a decent profit for your labours.
Where do replacement parts come from when the main firm is belly up?
Recycling parts is wise and normal for the car industry, you don't need GM to buy you to be efficiently recycle parts 😂
Respect for what you did, Matt. Great job. But I must say. I was one of those people who loved Saabs. I thought the 93 was such a great looking car. Went and got myself one. It absolutely broke my heart. Horrible reliability. Every week something was wrong with it. My love affair with Saab ended; I realised they're just Vectras or Insignias with a couple of gimmicks added. Gm really decked them over. The quality just was not there post gm. For example, that key fob issue you spoke about. I had that on my 2005 version. Why was it still an issue on the next generation! Same with the console buttons wearing. Just crap quality and attention to detail. I've found their Swedish cousins Volvo so much better in terms of quality.
IMO, Ford did a much better job with Volvo than GM did with Saab.
GM, as you said, made Saabs just posh Vectras, whereas the Focus gained some Volvo, most notably that epic 5-cylinder engine.
Exactly, GM ruined SAAB as they have done with many other brands.
GM definitely did SAAB dirty - on many occasions!
But it's funny how you mention stuff that was bespoke SAAB parts (i.e. switchgear and key fob. Ironically they wasted money on some of their own parts, that turned out to be less durable than the Opel-Vauxhall ones...)
Or the classic, black door handles on the outside that turned into a scratched, nasty grey over time...
On my YS3F the window regulator completely failed - I'd wish it was an ubiquitous, cheap Opel part! But no, inexplicably, it was a bespoke part as well.
In the end I got a spare cheaply from one of GMs self inflicted European disasters - a written off "Saabillac" BLS...
Still, the 9-3 has never let me down over several years and 50k, it always found it's way home. (Only once I needed roadside assistance, when the battery died on a chilly autumn day.)
So pleased it’s back to its former glory. SAAB’S were so an iconic model back in the late 70s and 80s. Even later models kept up with the competition. Such a shame they went out of reproduction . The 9-3 convertible still looks good even today 👍
I love watching this channel…. And I love your passion for saving cars from the scrap yard , even if it is financial suicide ….. Saabs are on another level of car romance…. I love em , I had a Saab 95 in silver and just loved it . I would let my 12 yr old daughter sit on my knees and steer it round our local cemetery ….. she’d change gear , reverse round very tight bends perfectly and they are big cars …. Love love love Saabs ….. and my daughter lol
You can fix that headlamp with a caulk gun and apply on the seal areas.
I love the dashboards on Saabs. Great design and plenty of proper buttons.

Great channel and feature 👍🏼 Alongside our Saab 900 Classic, we have been running a 93 convertible for 10 years now and it’s been a pleasure. GM platform/parts keeps the costs reasonable with a bit of DIY spanner work. Saab boffins ignored GM and went their own way with fancy innovative like cup holders & night panel, which adds to the character. Nice work keeping this one tip top ❤️
My wife’s Saab 93 Anniversary estate was a brilliant comfortable car back in 2007. She only had it for two years before getting a Kuga 😢
Matt have you driven the best diesel engine ever created? 2006 reg Honda Accord EX 2.2 diesel...at the time Honda CEO hated diesel but needed to make one for society...he aimed to make a diesel engine that was so refined, it could be petrol....he smashed it! Get one well looked after and tell me you know a better refined diesel engine 👍🤓

In the past I have owned three SAABs all from the pre GM era. I am so pleased to see that you gave this car the attention it deserved and saved it for someone out there who will appreciate it as much as you do. I am sure that person will pay the proper price for it and reward you for your efforts. If I could afford it that would be me......
As an 79 year old who has spent 25 years in the Middle East part of which was with the Saab importer for Bahrain and they are a much missed make,
Perhaps I need to get out more? But it's a guilty pleasure to watch the rescue process, having done it a few times myself. To find a survivor like the saab, with the condition it was in, really does justify the time and effort. I look forward to a happy result 😊

Love the fact its built like a tank and doesn't have sat nav and all the new gubbins no one needs. Looks like nothing else four door. Nice one . If i wasnt on the social i would seriously think about this.
I've just bought a lovely Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin Sportcombi and it's superb. There is something unique about Saab cars that enthusiasts love. wouldn't suprise me if these start to become collectable as time marches on. Hope someday that they can rise again with the Pheonix. Great video and i enjoy your content. Interesting cars and you aren't that far from where i live.love your garage/business and honesty as a car seller.
That is a lovely car. I’ve had 2 GM era SAABs and have a bit of a bittersweet relationship with them (neither of them ended well for me) but I love the brand (pre GM), and it’s nice to see another SAAB back on the road.

Well done Matt for saving a SAAB and for going the extra mile to get work completed to such a high standard. I have had my 2010 1.9 Tid Turbo Edition for 10 years now, and with 70k on the clock, I thought that was pretty low mileage. There are still plenty of SAAB specialists out there and both new and used parts are readily available, so there is no practical reason for not still owning a SAAB these days. There is also a very active SAAB club scene, and I am sure your SAAB will find a good home with somebody that will cherish it. Well done for doing the right thing and for creating very watchable videos.

Great save, Matt - Well done. I had one of these in standard silver. kept it for 5 years, took it to 240k miles, just normal running costs too. Great cars - shame they are no longer with us. Off to the museum with this specimen maybe?

Great find....I did sell Saab in the early 80's...prior to GM collaboration... and joined the race team in the UK ..
There is a great publication that may still exist ' Correctly Conceived and Properly Built '...the one mistake they made was not to offer a small car.
RIP Saab...Matt you made reference to the seats...the mold from the Saab Viggen Jet was identical in construction...superb seats.
