    Skip the water, sugar, substitute one cold beer, allow to rest overnight in fridge, and you have the perfect beer batter for onion rings.

    I worked at LJS and the batter came premade in i think 2lb paper bags and it has a pale orange color. we mixed it with plain tap water and let it sit for a few min. the fish and chicken are fried frozen not thawed.......i dont know where these people came up with club soda and sugar.

      I think their might be a tiny bit of cornmeal and a tiny bit of paprika that gives it that orange color. Very little added ....what do you think?

    i've seen several Long John Silvers recipes on here that use club soda rather than sugar and water....i would not use sugar.....LJS doesn't taste sweet......

    • @JohnWPB

      LJS batter is not sweet. The small amount of sugar just counter acts the other flavors, such as the baking soda.

      Of course Long John Silvers isn't clean, I mean in Treasure Island. He was a pirate. The long John Silvers out here in Everett , takes forever to make your food. I've seen people walk out.

  • @MeltWithU
    @MeltWithU Před 4 lety +7

    The mistake I think a lot of people make is that you need to let the batter sit in the refrigerator overnight. So the flavors can meld together in the batter. Otherwise, the taste isnt going to be there.

      The Badboy Live not heard that but the taste was wonderful 🤷‍♀️

    • @MeltWithU
      @MeltWithU Před 4 lety +3

      @@ModernPioneers I'm sure it still tastes great. Though, you will just get a stronger taste and all the ingredients will have time to fully flavor the batter itself. The longer you leave it sit, the stronger it would be and the better it would taste. I noticed, when I tried some of these recipes, that you could taste the ingredients but they had a much less pronounced taste than that of what you would get at Long John Silvers. When I let the batter sit in the refrigerator overnight, it brought everything out and made it taste that much better. You should try it next time you make this.

      I never have to do that and my chicken is spicy af. It’s not this type of batter though. but I’m gonna make it this way and I don’t think I’ll have a problem lol. You just gotta season the chicken dry, season the batter too. And use good seasonings

      @@ModernPioneers with no disrespect, it was pretty bland. I originally followed a recipe that called for 3/4 flour but upped that to 1c after it wasn't thick enough for me. I also have to have a Lot of seasoning for my taste buds so I added salt even after they were finished. We used Cod, has anyone tried seasoning the cod on top of being battered?

      @@ModernPioneers We fried them in a skillet with maybe 1/2" oil and just flipped them. The crunch was totally there! I mean yeah, the breading/batter is spot on...just some ingredients are needed for that special taste really. My gf read quite a few opinions (and looked up how Gordan Ramsy does his...shes a huge fan) and I guess a lot of people use selza (spl?) or carbonated stuff in place of the water?? We didn't ad sugar either. For the most part it was good for our first try! I should also mention im a saltoholic so my taste in food would prolly make you spit it right back out ha.

      I worked there in high school when the wraps came out. it had the following:
      Tortilla
      Garlic rice base
      Chicken
      Romain lettuce
      Carrots
      Tomatoes
      Crumbs from batter ( never had cornflakes)
      Ranch
      I made so many of these I will never forget. Also all these batter recipes I've seen Are never close. Never ever used soda water like some suggest. It was a bagged dry mix with a pre measured amount of water. Also we never used cold water just strait out the water dispenser from tap. Batter didn't like to be cold made it too thick.

      @@randyeffler7135 That’s so cool you worked there. We had one by my childhood home all through the 90s and 2000s and used to go there ALL the time up until high school when it shut down. As a kid, I hated fish and would always get the chicken with honey mustard packets and coleslaw. Now I love fish, but still like their chicken better. Never really cared for the fries, but the hush puppies and crumblies were my side dishes basically. The corn on the cob was always so waterlogged, but I liked it anyway 😂 my dad was so cheap growing up with us 3 kids even though we were far from struggling, and we were never allowed to get drinks…only cups of water lol looking back and especially the way the economy is now, I can understand why he tried saving money in areas where it was easy. In the long run, water is way healthier than soda or lemonade, and it’s totally free at restaurants. Crazy haha. Now there are only a handful of LJS in my area, but the closest one is 12 miles away and I haven’t been there in ages ☹️ they are slowly dwindling away and I wish they weren’t. Such a nice alternative to every place else that does the typical burger, fries, and shakes 😒
