Apparently more than once the Conan show told Norm at the last minute before his going on that he needed to talk for say, 12 minutes. Having only a quick joke or two planned he'd run with it stretching one out. The result was always funny. His famous moth joke is perhaps an even better example of Norm's ability to tell a joke in this unique way.

    A porpoise is a dolphin-like animal.
He said "I believe I'm serving a youthful porpoise" AKA feeding a baby dolphin, but it's also supposed to sound like "serving a useful purpose".
It's basically a play on words between "youthful porpoise" and "useful purpose". The whole idea is he goes on a 5 minute ramble to make a terrible pun at the end.
His moth joke is even better in my opinion.

There is no one else like Norm. My favorite moment from him is when he was on Dave Letterman's last show.
He told a few jokes. Some old, some new. But he ended with his turning to Dave and telling him that if it weren't for Dave, he would not have had a career. He was on the verge of calling it quits, and Dave reached out and asked him to do a set on his show.
Watching Norm wipe tears from his eyes is not something I ever thought I'd see.

No one could draw out a joke like Norm. You should watch the clip of him telling the Moth joke. He takes what's essentially a 2 line joke from a joke-book written for children, and makes it a hilarious 6 minute journey.
He was also a genius, even as a child. He could have been a world class mathematician if he wanted to, but luckily for us he didn't like all the school work and chose to do comedy.
He's truly one of the best to ever do it and belongs on the Mount Rushmore of comedy

The back story is hilarious. As a previous commenter mentioned, sometimes guests would bow out and they needed to fill time. Norm would come prepared for his segment only to find they needed him for the final segment of 7 to 10 minutes. Off the top of his head, he would come with these silly jokes that he poetically turned into 10 minute stories. The best example of this is the famous MOTH joke. Here he intertwines Russian literature into the story. Once again as a last minute save for Conan. Check out the Moth. You won't be disappointed....

A guest on The Norm Show asked him his process to his jokes and it was the first time I’d ever seen/heard him actually explain it to someone, just in plain sight for us to hear.
He said on stage, he knows the punchline then purposefully digs a hole that he has to recover from to reach it. And that’s what keeps him interested in his comedy.
So, I think that’s what most fans already know but it was so rare that he wasn’t messing around with his guest and just explained his comedy, in plain sight on the show.

Norm had this thing on talk shows, and I think he was the only one who did it, where he told old, sometimes stinkers of jokes as actual events in his life. Conversational. Sprinkled with detail and funny asides on the way to the usually groaner punchline. An example would be, "NO! Not THAT pig - that's Kitchner Leslie's girlfriend!" Conan became a master at playing the straight man, and usually found a way to add to the funny - like pointing out the name change in the bit you just watched. And the banter at the end. Andy scored as well with that great dog poop line.

He was indeed a genius. He was a student of Russian literature and he could recite entire passages at the drop of a hat. He was a compulsive gambler with an encyclopedic knowledge of sports trivia, and really any trivia. Recently I learned from the Harland Williams podcast that he fashioned his rambling delivery on Archie Bunker. A lot of his work blurred the lines between truth and fiction. He stole or borrowed a lot, especially from obscure old timey places, and was never easy to tell when he was being sincere. And who is this man? You guessed it: Frank Stallone

Norm never got hugely famous or successful but amongst the people who truly mattered to him, his peers and fellow comedians/writers, he was genuinely beloved and respected.

I love hearing a good story teller, and I think most people do, but a lot of people struggle with the story itself.

With Norm, it's always the journey that makes the joke funnier than if he just told the joke, which is a simple pun that a kid would tell. If you watch his other jokes on conan and on letterman etc, you'll see the same thing happen, they all know the game. absolutely nothing you hear matters. the real joke is that he gets you to listen to all that in the process.

I said it on your last Norm vid but he was the absolute king of the shaggy dog story. Lots of people will recommend the Moth joke (as will I) as a perfect example but I also love his story about the bed & breakfast trip and the story (stories?) of Dirty Johnny…

So if you didn't know Norm actually recorded a last "special" during the pandemic and its on netflix. When it came out they also did a companion to that there is a discusion with Letterman, Conan, Chapelle, Sandler, David spade, and Molly Shannon just talking about Norm.

It's all about a long, dragged-out story leading to a corny punchline (if there is a punchline). Genius.
I'm glad I discovered your channel. I get to re-watch Norm through a new set of eyes.

my cottage is not far from the community of temiskaming shores which is in northern ontario (and the only place with that in it's name). lake temiskaming is in both provinces ontario and quebec; but like a lot of the rest of the joke the fine details meant next to nothing. the punchline still cracks me up and it probably wouldn't nearly as much if he hadn't built it up so much and in such a roundabout way and on national US television.

Norm WAS a Genius!...He graduated high school at a young age and was very gifted in math but he would tell people he dropped out of high school to do comedy. He mentioned in an interview how the smartest guy in a room is always hated by everyone and never funny so he always acted like he was dumb. You should really check out his Moth Joke on Conan and then watch his appearance on The View where he pisses off Barbara Walters

I had a twitter encounter with Norm probably 12 years ago. It was it was 2:00 am and I was watching the movie "Spinal Tap," with the French subtitles on. In the movie Spinal Tap sings "Listen to the Flower People." I don't speak or read French, but I knew Norm did. I tweeted Norm the line "Listen to what the flower people say," as it was in the French subtitles. Norm responded why. I explained what it was from. Norm wrote that the line translated into "Listen to the smelly people." The funny thing was that Rosanne Barr was also in the thread. I got to ask him a question.

I'm not Norm is great, but Conan's channel, Team Coco, also has a few Norm videos and the quality is much better than most other channels. For Norm/Conan videos it's best to first check out that channel. If only David Letterman had something similar.

It's all about the journey. Norm has an amazing way of getting you to hang on every word, because we're all waiting for the punch line, and we CAN'T WAIT TO LAUGH!!! And he's so meta, I would not have been surprised if he named a person "X", because their name isn't central to the joke, though it could be funny. Surprisingly, Quebec and Toronto are NOT Canada's capital; Ottowa is.

Actually, it was classic Norm MacDonald humor. A lengthy set-up of a convoluted story, only to deliver a groaner of a pun. I loved watching Norm, because he would always deliver a surprise ending -- some hilarious, some not so hilarious, but always entertaining (or on occasion, downright shocking)! RIP Norm.

What makes it so funny is that you realize that he had you completely invested in the joke and the story just to show you that he could do it and then, at the end, he crushes every dream you had that there could be some meaning behind it all.
