      This really is what it ultimately came down to. Norm wasnt big on conforming when it came to comedy. If something was funny to him, or he wanted to do something.... he was gonna do it regardless if no on else on the planet thought it was funny. Thing is, a lot of people still found most of his stuff funny so its not like he was Andy Kaufman level obtuse with his humor. But he was still edgy enough that the corporate side of things didnt like him much. Crazy to think that he almost lost his entire career over some OJ jokes. lmao

    Don Ohlmeyer was President of NBC and a golfing buddy of OJ Simpson's. He didn't like the OJ jokes, especially after the trial was over and reportedly told Lorne Michaels on multiple occassions that he wanted MacDonald to knock it off.
    That apparently didn't sit well with MacDonald, so he doubled down on them knowing it would piss Ohlmeyer off.
    Ultimately, Ohlmeyer had him fired from SNL...which was a big mistake.
    If you look up Ohlmeyer today, it's one of the few things he's famous for. That's not a great legacy.
    Still, Norm MacDonald's "don't give a damn" attitude did get him fired from SNL.

    Quisling (/ˈkwɪzlɪŋ/, Norwegian: [ˈkvɪ̂slɪŋ]) is a term used in Scandinavian languages and in English to mean a citizen or politician of an occupied country who collaborates with an enemy occupying force - or more generally as a synonym for traitor or collaborator.[1][2][3] The word originates from the surname of the Norwegian war-time leader Vidkun Quisling, who headed a domestic Nazi collaborationist regime during World War II.

    This was a momentous 24 hours in comedy. Norm was publicly fired from Update in the morning, appeared on Letterman the same night, and then did the Howard Stern Show in the morning, and brought his friend Artie Lange with him, in an attempt to deflect further questions about his firing. The Stern crew fell in love with Artie, who went on to be hired there and became the only true co-host besides Robin in the show's long history.

      Norm was very smart. His run on who wants to be a millionaire should be evidence enough of that... but I don't think not knowing quisling was an act. It's not a common word. Contrary to what shows like Scorpion would have us believe, being intelligent does not mean you know every piece of knowledge.

    • @jamesaaron7211
      @jamesaaron7211 Před 4 měsíci

      @@dannykent6190 yeah, I get your point but tbh Quisling is very much within his wheelhouse. Never know for sure, but in that pretending to be dim/ignorant is a major part of his comedy…especially in interview/conversation type settings, I’d just say that his saying he didn’t know…to the point of getting out a dictionary…well, at the very least I’ll say it doesn’t tell us anything about whether he knew or not. He LOVED words, he loved playing with them, their sound, the difference inflection and pace has on their effect, etc. He had a White Whale thing, spent years trying to find what in his mind was the pinnacle of comedy; a joke where the set up and punchline are exactly the same sentence. So there is no way of knowing why he was saying he didn’t know.

    I'm sure countless people have suggested it - and apologies if you've already reacted to it - but Norm's appearance on Letterman 's final show was very funny and very moving. Like an unexpected emotional gut punch tbh, that to me was the ultimate evidence that Norm was a "real one" in a world of phoneyness in American TV.

    Britt, when you spoke of your PDC thingie I was reminded that here in Canada the liquor stores have for decades sold a very inexpensive product called 'Gilbey's Lemon Collins' that is lemon-flavoured gin. By being really cheap, too easy to drink, and popular with the young ladies who can't afford more expensive booze, it is colloquially known as "panty remover" or "panty dropper" by the young men.

    I hadn't realized Norm was so tall - Letterman is tall, and Norm was taller. Welcome to the world of corporate media! "Between you and me" on national TV - loved it. Quisling is a good word - it basically means "collaborator". I'd be surprised if Norm actually didn't know what it meant. Letterman enjoyed sticking it to NBC when he could. It would've been nice if Ulmyer had hired OJ Simpson to host weekend update. As for the PDC - ladies love a funny man - go for it! Milli Vanilli had a couple hits, then word came out that they didn't actually sing any of their songs.

    Letterman and Norm had a lot of mutual respect. They always spoke very highly of each other. Letterman invited Norm to his show many times, and actually for the very last Letterman show he invited Norm to be the last guest. After Letterman retired Norm invited him to his podcast, I think a couple of times. I also saw a video of Letterman doing an homage to Norm after he passed away by doing a joke question as an audience member during a press conference in a sporting event (IIRC), imitating one Norm had done before.

    Letterman was an absolute savage about NBC's management during his last year or so there. Virtually everyone expected him to take over The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson retired; he'd been groomed for the position for years, often acting as guest host when Carson took nights off. So it was a shock to everyone when NBC screwed Dave over and gave the show to Leno.
    Dave's bitterness really showed through in his last year there, he was basically daring NBC to fire him. When he finally started at CBS, his bitterness disappeared and he was back to his adorable, curmudgeonly self.
    So yeah, he was dead serious when he was trash-talking NBC brass here, there wasn't a drop of love lost between them.
