  • Intolerance of uncertainty is like a psychological allergy to uncertainty. For some people who are more intolerant of uncertainty, all it takes is for there to be just a little bit of uncertainty in a situation and it can cause a big emotional reaction for that person - they get anxious, worried and overwhelmed. Whereas, for someone who is not intolerant of uncertainty, they can be in the exact same situation and not feel anxious at all. This video discusses how reassurance seeking is a manifestation of intolerance of uncertainty. Seeking support and advice from other people can be very helpful, but excessive reassurance seeking is problematic, particularly for people who worry a lot. Reassurance seeking aims at reducing uncertainty by getting other people’s input. However, excessive reassurance seeking can reduce your confidence and sense of judgment in what you think and what you believe. It can also lead to difficulties in relationships if you’re constantly seeking reassurance from other people. Therefore, it’s important to work on eliminating excessive reassurance seeking to help build your tolerance for uncertainty. You do this in two ways: a) Creating tolerating uncertainty experiments in which you limit how much information seeking you do; and b) Taking advantage of naturally occurring opportunities to tolerate uncertainty by frequently reflecting on the following question, “If I were more tolerant of uncertainty, what would I do in this situation?” By building tolerance for uncertainty through reducing reassurance seeking, you can become more confident in yourself and your judgment.

Reassurance seeking? Guilty. Sad, I admit. I thought I’d conquer this by age 66.

Thanks for this video.I struggle a lot with reassurance seeking in my romantic relationship and really want to stop this. It’s very tiring for me and even my partner. I would love to hear an ‘experiment’ that I could soon the daily to stop doing this. I’ve tried to just not think about it but that pink elephant… 😅

Thank you! Your videos are always great because you provide a "protocol" to test and fix the problems we are facing, it's super useful! I will for sure test this one as I feel I am guilty of this reassuring seeking due to my lack of selfsteem.

First, you are a genius. Also, you just described me perfectly. I have been told by so many people over the years to “just go for it. Just make a decision. Don’t ask for my permission, etc.”. I am going to try to start the small daily experiments and see what happens. Thank you for your knowledge and time in making your videos.

I have the same problem and therapy helps a lot, just finding out how to calm yourself and cope can relive the pain from anxiety.
