It’s the best soap opera I’ve ever seen and I mean that in the nicest way.
It’s Karate Kid for a new generation, while still respecting and continuing the journey of characters that were already established and that people grew up with.
I’m so glad they included his Outsiders performance. The last scene with him and Dallas will always be powerful
The Outsiders is a true CLASSIC!! We read the book in my english class in school and so did my kids so to this day the movie is one of our absolute favorites!! Much love Ralph ❤ He is a true Legend.

Karate Kid 2 is very underrated. Great cast, amazing score, lots of heart and touching moments, a more raw final match with higher stakes, and Kumiko was Daniel’s best pairing in my humble opinion.
Nah man that has the be Karate Kid 3 the villain and the bad boy of karate made this movie so great to watch
And don't forget the scene at the beach where Daniel comforts Miyagi after his father dies. It gets me every time I see it.

I'm glad to hear him talk about The Outsiders more. I love the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai series, but The Outsiders film will always have a special place in my film loving heart.

@@bellaknightR597 Right, it's absolutely mind blowing when you realize that none of them at the time were established stars or the major household names they would later become. The only one of the cast who was a well known star at the time was actually the 70's teen idol Leif Garrett as Bob the Soc who Johnny ( Ralph ) ends up killing in self defense . It just goes to show just how good the casting was that they grabbed so many future big name stars for this film.

I could listen to him talk forever. He has such a soothing voice and a way about how he explains things that just holds my attention like few other people can. Loved this man as a child and I still love him now in my 40's :)
I hope he makes a audiobook for his new book coming out why read it when I can hear him read it his voice is soothing 🙂

Ralph looks very young for his age.
Ralph made a good point about how they portray Daniel in the show. It was a little weird seeing him as a dealership owner but it started to make more sense as the seasons went on. Also it makes more sense when you rewatch the movies and you see that Daniel was always pretty cocky.
One thing I love is the wax on wax off movement lol. When a student or students comes in because they want to learn karate and are all hyped up. He then takes them where he has a bunch of dirty cars lined up and tells them to clean all his cars which is why one of the reasons it makes perfect sense he is into cars. Most students quit but the ones that stick around eventually get frustrated after doing it for days and then threaten to quit complaining that they wanted to learn karate not be an unpaid lackey then this is my favorite part he attacks them and they block using the wax-on wax-off movement and the student looks surprised at that themselves blocking.

The outsiders is by far my favorite movie, and I think Ralph fit the role for johnny PERFECTLY. I've read the book a million times, and every time I read about johnny, I picture Ralph in my head. It just fits perfectly.
he was a client at my previous job. VERY sweet, down to earth, never ever pulled the “celeb” card. just an overall cool dude who was always a pleasure to see.

Espacially after The Karate Kid 3
Karate Kid basically made his career and ended it in one fell swoop. He made so much money with those 3 films, he really didn't need to keep working. Also nobody really casted him unless the movie had some sort of Martial Arts theme.

Ralph Macchio is a legend and he was fantastic in the original Karate Kid.
I know it’s obvious but you can still see his teenage and young adult self perfectly through the ageing. It’s nostalgic
So I'm halfway into Season 5 of Cobra Kai and I know he gets this constantly, but it is shocking how young he really does look given he is 60 years old! Especially that *steam room* scene (if you know, you know) the steam fogged up his face enough that you couldn't see any wrinkles or anything else (not that he had many) and it looked like he was a kid again almost. It was WILD. I don't think that part of that scene was intentional, but given the other character in that scene, and how Ralph Macchio looked even younger... I got chills. As if I was back in time.

Well, you're not wrong. If we're really talking "Iconic" then Daniel Larusso is pretty much it. But still, even though this is a glorified commercial for Cobra Kai, I think Ralph tells a pretty good story. Cut the guy a break.

I first saw the Outsiders in 1994, after we read the book in English class. I still got weepy seeing Johnny on that hospital bed, even out of context in this interview. Coppola really caught lightning in a bottle with Hinton's book and that cast (and Carmine Coppola's score)! I still have that Frost poem memorized. 💖 Stay gold, everyone. 🌟
Anyone who is watching Season 5 currently- did you also get chills during the steam room scene?! The steam sort of blurred Daniel's face, and it made him look even younger than he already does. It made him look like it was his young self vs Silver, almost like we were going back in time to where their rivalry started. I don't think it was intentional on their part but you could take that visual and sense that scared boy in Daniel, the same look he had in the OG movies whenever he encountered Silver. I don't think I am explaining this well but I found it very cool. I am just loving the scenes between Silver and Daniel
There was a lot of KK3 references....right down to Silver soundly breaking Danny physically, mentally and emotionally (thus symbolizing the broken banzai tree).
Karate Kid 3 was probably the weakest of all of the films but the way they’ve repurposed and re-worked that material and lore for Cobra Kai has been great. That’s the brilliance of Cobra Kai, it doesn’t ignore anything, and takes the best of it all and twists it all around for something new.
I've noticed that too, actually. Although not much, but I definitely picked up that detail. I thought like "whoah, young Ralph/Daniel is back somehow." I'm glad somebody pointed this out. 💙
He's 60 years old, remarkable! Seems like a genuinely good guy.

Me and my classmates were in hysterics when we watched the movie. It's hard to take things serious with immature Gen z students. When I watched it for the first time it had me in tears as well. It's for sure iconic.
Such a humble man. Loved his energy and what he brought into the entertainment shows since KK era.
Man... I really wish y'all would've covered Crossroads, which is a fantastic film that didn't do well during its theatrical run, but one critics loved and where Ralph had a fantastic leading performance.

man i love how they put in those deep sceens where he talks to mr miyagi .... its those moments that connect me back to the original magic of the films.
So many amazing roles. If I had to chose a favorite performance, it would be The Outsiders.

My favourite thing about cobra Kai is how the characters in it actually make relatable decisions and choices, like a horror movie where you’re like “don’t go into that room! You’re gonna die” then they go in and die, this isn’t that kind of show and I love it.
Ralph really is killing it in Cobra Kai. I couldn't be happier with him and his character. Everyone on that show is doing a great job.

After rewatching all 4 Karate Kid films, it strikes me that Johnny is a potential new father who needs to find peace, his center, and his balance. Perhaps Daniel can teach Johnny what served as a distraction to win against Mike Barnes. He should teach Johnny the importance and value of knowing his "Kata".
I loved his performance in The Outsiders. Watched it when I was a kid in my 7th grade year, read it every few months since! Love!

What happened to him is what every actor fears - that they will be typecast and will never be able to get another meaningful role. Glad he at least got to go back to the role that both made him and 'ruined' him. Obviously a very intelligent and self aware man, good luck to him.
Someone once remarked, "Johnny Cade died and was reborn as the Karate Kid!" I don't know how true that statement is, but it is ironic that Ralph did go on to play two very beloved underdogs. Maybe its me, but I've noticed more than a few times Ralph has infused some of Johnny's emotions and vulnerability into Daniel.
Who knows, maybe, in some alternate universe, Johnny Cade and Daniel Larusso are one and the same.

I like that he speaks so highly of the people he works with and takes the time to analyze the 'why' and the motivation behind his characters
In the 90's, I taught 7th-grade reading and would read The Outsiders aloud to my students a little each day in the spring of the school year. Once I finished the book, I would show the movie - this was when you could still show a whole movie to your students. It took two days - half one day and half the next day. Every year, the students loved it and found parts of it funny like when Ponyboy gets his haircut in the church, but they always cried for Johnny when he died. Even though they knew it was coming, seeing Ralph Macchio play that scene brought on real tears. The book and the movie are both true works of art that will touch the hearts of students forever.
I looked a lot like Ralph Macchio when I was younger. He's brought some amazing, iconic roles to life!
Outsiders all the actors became big time actors and had long carrers amazing see them all together.
Would've been cool if you got to talk about Ol Lightning boy Martone working with Steve Vai at the crossroads. For being one of the most awesome guitarist...Vai (in interviews) seems incredibly humble. That's some kind of nice.

I'm really disappointed that my hands down favorite movie he's ever done wasn't even mentioned at all. " Crossroads " was a fantastic movie. The guitar duel with Macchio and Steve Vai was legendary. Joe Seneca " Willie Brown " and Jami Gertz roles in the film were great too. Tim Roth even does a cameo
I know he will mostly be remembered as Daniel LaRusso but I think he has the look to pull off other characters going forward. Similar to Daniel Radcliffe who is always known first as Harry Potter, but his career kept going.

Deeply disappointed by the lack of Crossroads here. One of the great guitar movies, it introduced teenage me to the works of Robert Johnson and was one of the main the reasons I started to play slide.

Good interview. He's lucky in that he has not made many movie's, but the ones he mentions are, as he said, iconic. As a teen in the 80's the Outsiders was very memorable. And being a "Vinnie" I can always say "like as in My Cousin Vinnie" when introducing myself and people always remember my name with that reference.

The Outsiders book and movie will forever be my favorite, absolutely no movie or book will top that. I wish I could go back to my sixth grade english class and relive reading the book and watching the movie again, it changed my life forever.
I’m so proud of how well the series has been. Karate kid part 1 is and always will be my number 1 movie. Watching it as a 3 year old, it taught me that you can be what ever you want in life and the spirit of the movie never left me 🎉❤❤😊
Seeing him talk about mr miyagi is so nostalgic. Literal flashbacks to being a kid seeing these movies for the first time when my dad decided to share these movies with me back in the 90s/early 2000s thanks dad!

I think that'd be a bad idea. Mr Miyagi had this aura of mystery about his character and that's kinda like the man with no name who was a mysterious character.
