      Nick Chinlund would be better: he looks exactly like the comic book figure - more than Jackman - and can do the tough-guy persona onscreen well. See him playing Toombs in Chronicle of Riddick.

    I met Karl Urban at a convention in 2009 a few months before Star Trek came out. I was only 15 and really shy, pretty much unable to speak - and Karl was SO lovely to me and really approachable and engaged in speaking to me. He was so kind and polite. Genuinely such a lovely human being as well as a top tier actor.

      @@cookie80088 In my opinion, that's a kind of irony to him. I've seen people who did not realize he was in LotR. He disappears into his roles, so much so that his name was rarely a selling point of a movie.
      I remember him as Vaako in The Chronicle of Riddick, too.

    Karl Urban frowning even harder as Dredd during the middle part of the movie was some of the best face acting i've ever seen in any movie. The entire first half of the movie has the tone set of Dredd with his famous frown, and then the camera comes in close and he somehow frowns even harder. its amazing

    Karl is one of those rare actors that Never gives you a bad performance no matter what the character or movie! His McCoy nails the exasperation that Deforest Kelly portrayed dealing with Kirk and Spock.

      @@BagOCheetos For me there is stuff on “Into Darkness” in particular where I was just aghast at how excellent and how Star Trek it was. Really loved the first half despite it not making a lick of sense for Cumberbatch to be playing Khan. But then my problem is, it feels like that film, and the others, go off after some amazing scene and do something that totally ruins the momentum, or the feel, or the story itself.

      @@thestarseeker8196 Unfortunately it is the direction of many of these film franchises to do "expectation subversion" instead of just knocking out good material. But that isnt the director or actors fault, it is the fault of the writers, producers, and studios. You can almost set your watch to how frequently bad writing is produced into film. Lol.

    The fact that he mentions Anton Yelchin shows you what kind of guy he is. Actors get bad reps a lot of the time but there truly are some kind generous humans in the movie business and Karl's one of them.

      It seems that you have to be good, must have luck and be wise in how to get important roles to get famous. Well I bet for many actors it's not even that much about the money or fame, bu more on interesting roles. I understand people like Harrison Ford who only plays at high gage but you also have to sell yourself as a top product in this buisness to keep on getting good roles in good movies. I've seen many no name actors do incredible stuff, but they just didn't fit for the big industry or just played in movies with low income. Karl is one of that guys who is dedicated to acting and makes good choises.

    His scene in LotR: Return of the King extended cut when he finds Eowyn “dead” almost always makes me cry. The grief/anguish carries so smoothly and instantly. His face. Ugh. It’s agony to the emotions.

      Too bad they didn't do it like the book. Where he finds her body during the battle(not after like the movie), then he turns that terrible grief into complete rage and rides off to slay the Orcs & Haradrim.

Some disappointments in the translation, sure, but to this day I still get goosebumps seeing the Rohirrim crest the hill at daybreak, and then Theoden's call to battle. Perfect canon? Nah. But it's still epic, and it captures the feel perfectly. I honestly don't think anyone can or will ever touch what Jackson brought to film

    I met Karls Dad once (at his shoe shop in Wellington) and he was SOOOO proud of him. He asked us if we were LOTR fans and then he showed our family his photo albums of Karl on all his movies/shows. Such a lovely man, no wonder Karl is also!

    Billy’s bloody smile with the crazed look in his eye legitimately sends chills down my spine. It’s easily some of the best characterization Karl has injected into one of his roles and all through the 2 second smile of a mad man.

    I love how everyone who worked on Lord of the Rings basically all say "nothing like that will ever happen again, and it was incredible." I think a lot of it is because it was before the age of "actors on a green screen," so a lot of the actors were in the experience together. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was probably the largest film project ever made that was shot mostly with practical effects that required actual people to be on actual sets.

      The Lord of the Rings was amazing thanks to all of the prosthethics and practical effects. I have no idea why Peter Jackson then decided to ditch all of that for horribly fake looking CGI in the Hobbit series.

      @@Intranetusa There's actually a variety of reasons for that, chief of them being that the Hobbit was supposed to be 2 movies and was directed by Guilermo del Toro at first, who left the project. Jackson came in to take over, but they simply didn't have the time to make all the practical stuff and make it look good. Lord of the Rings had years of preproduction under Jackson, a luxury he didn't have for the Hobbit.

      Yeah, it's a very different approach to film making, we might not see it again.
      Hobbiton is an actual place you can visit because they made it.
      The crossbows are actual crossbows they made.
      They just don't do it that way now.

      One of the requests (or requirements) that the landowners of where Hobbiton was filmed, had, was the set be real so that people could visit.
      In saying that, some places such as Minas Tirith were CGI'ed

I remember they mentioned it was the flagship set that they used to impress anyone important that happened to visit New Zealand while they were filming. Obviously it wasn’t a huge tower, so they used different angles and areas to represent different levels of the in-movie city.

      I mean, any business analyst in the movie industry should understand how much of a cult classic that movie already is.
      The first one had some awful marketing, push the 3D aspect way too much. At the same time it is ironic, considering it is probably the best use of 3D that was ever applied during that trend. The slo-mo scenes where amazing in 3D

    I absolutely love this man.

    Karl Urban was great as Eomer.He didn't have a lot of scenes but he definitely had the screen presence to make Eomer a memorable character. I am happy for the success he enjoys after LOTR.

      lyin Return of the King Extended Edition, in the aftermath of the siege of the Minas Tiras, he was looking around for survivors and he sudden spots his sister unconscious on the ground just wailing in horror thinking his sister is dead. Even though he didnt get much screen time, that performance was great.
      Meanwhile Gandalf was like : )

      I absolutely love how he was perfectly fine with keeping the helmet on throughout the movie. Compare that to Stallone who not only took it off every chance he could, but squeezed in a kiss at the end. That's the difference between an actor who cares about the character and an actor who only cares about themselves.

      While I don't disagree, everyone forgets that the start of it all, the series that got that change started, was Hercules. Xena was a spin-off, and those changes Karl talks about were well underway when Xena started filming.

      Same, I've watched the Bourne Supremacy and Thor: Ragnarok and I honestly did not know they were both him. It's not that I recognised him at the time. I only really started paying attention after watching him in 'The Boys'.
      When I went back expecting some semblance of his previous characters looking like Butcher, I was so surprised. None of his characters look similar to each other at all.

    Karl Urban is one of the most versatile actors ever. All his roles I hardly notice it's Karl because it's like a disguise. He works the character and the transformation into the character so well I just never realize it's Karl in that part until I find out later. He's such a chameleon.

    The fact that we never got a sequel further exploring Urban’s Dredd is criminal. That movie was fantastic and one of the most brilliant comic book adaptations ever put to screen imo.     I saw Dredd when it came out, but for some reason didn't think much of it. Now that time has passed I see how great the movie truly is. Those little details, psychology, the world. The whole crew really shined and showed utmost respect and love to Dredd comics.

      BTW the fact Dredd (Urban) keeps his helmet on for the full movie makes the Marvel movies look even more silly, in when heroes are taking their helmets/masks off (or make them mysteriously disappear by nanotec "magic") in every random scene.

    He has had an incredible run of diverse characters and he absolutely nailed every single one of them. His range is as exceptional as his humbleness and praise of everyone around him.

    I’m SO thrilled we got a Dredd who actually was raised with and loved the material. I hope one day we do get to visit these stories again, too - with Karl Urban in the helmet!

    A little sad he didn’t talk about playing Vakko in Riddick but Karl is such a fantastic actor glad to live in a time where we can see him play in so many amazing films

    I seriously want another Dredd movie with Karl Urban that was a phenomenal performance. And Urban's ability to become a character and not have actor demands that could ruin it is well appreciated.

    Basically, whoever is in charge of the movie rights to Judge Dredd, so many people would watch a Dredd 2 it's ridiculous. Get as much of the same crew as possible, and obviously Urban as Dredd. It would be amazing.

    One of the few actors that I genuinely can never recognize becasue he is so in his character and makes every single character unique, not just to his personality. Best in class, imo. Heavily underappreciated. Chris Nolan needs to put him into his next movie.

    With the exception of The Boys, where he looks like himself, I never recognize Karl Urban when I watch movies and he is playing a role. Usually my partner has to say that's Karl Urban and I squint my eyes and go, OMG that is Karl Urban! I think that says so much about his ability to immerse himself in the role so utterly that he becomes the character. It's uncanny. Great actor and I look forward to not recognizing him in many future movies.

    I love Karl Urban. It's a crime that we didn't get a Dredd sequel or a Season 2 to Almost Human, both of which are brilliant works of art and so underrated.

      I’ve forgiven the world for no Dredd sequel, but I don’t think I’ll ever get over Almost Human not getting a 2nd season to at least wrap up all the things that were introduced

      should have done a 10 episode, no identity politics, true to the stories Dredd series... would have been one for the ages.

    I first saw him on xena, as cupid. I have loved him ever since. he is an actor who instantly recognise and then forgets because he IS the character. loved him as a vampire, and a soldier turned superhuman in a movie with Rosamund Pike. forgot the names of those movies.
