@@theconsciousobserver6829 I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes and trash talked it too. But then one day I was bored and watched the next few episodes & was blown away. It’s not award winning TV, but it’s fun for fans to watch. Even if you hate it, it’s fun to watch bc it’s cheesy and the bad kind of good (like KK3).
I love that Pat calls him “Ralphie” 😭 I’m sure others did too, but when he says it, it just feels special

Hearing about how well Pat and Ralph meshed during filming is heartwarming and yet sad too now that Pat is no longer with us. I can tell every time in Cobra Kai when Daniel is reminded of Mr. Miyagi, that's not just acting. Ralph is thinking about Pat.
Ralph has done a good thing for Pat in this. Laying a groundwork for his legacy.

It amazes me still to this day that it took Ralph like 30 years to look like he just got out of his late 20's.
It amazes me how Terry Silver looks like his grandfather today, when Ralph Macchio is a year older than him.

Martin Kove is among the most underrated great actors. The entire cast has evolved tremendously as actors and friends since these movies. I hope the writers of Cobra Kai are getting paid well because they are making the best show with a cast of great actors.
I don't know if he was outshone by Thomas Ian Griffith or if it's age, but I ended Cobra Kai season 4 thinking he was kinda limited.

Idk, show was cool first season or two, felt like a homage. Then it got a little popular & got weird fast. This was about the hill valley tournament, not them going to mexico to rescue a girlfriend's kid, highschoolers having keggers, & whatever else they're trying to push in coming seasons.

You can definitely feel Pats presence and portrayal as Myagi in the Cobra Kai series. Without a shadow of a doubt.

I was fortunate to be friends with Rob Garrison ( tommy ),in the 90's in Hollywood. What a great human being. His Iconic saying, "put him in a body bag" will live forever. May he RIP, taken from us waaay too soon. We love Ya Rob.

Anyone else come back to this video every few years just to hear Pat Morita do the Myagi voice? Such a great performer. No way that movie works with anyone else on the planet in that role.
17:04 Pat Morita looked so sagely during this interview compared to his younger self as Mr. Miyagi in the tetrology. And I think it's sweet how he referred to Ralph Macchio as "Ralphie."
The absolute best scene ever was in part two when Daniel was comforting myogi on the beach explaining to him his feeling towards his own father when he died and how Daniel felt guilty he didn’t do everything in his power to make it right with dad before he did.the sheer emotions from that scene and myogi shedding a tear tugs at your heart.

Northern Ireland, 1984, middle of a civil war the Irish troubles, growing up around bombings every bloody day - Me, 5 years old at Primary school doing crane kicks in the playground, along with all my other classmates. 2022, peace in Ireland, 42 years old, still doing crane kicks and loving Cobra Kai.
I love that Pay calls Ralph “Ralphy” It gives my a father son vibe to their relationship and I love it.

Yeah I know same here, when I first seen him on Happy Days, I was like, this is Mr Mr Miyagi from the Karate Kid? Totally different personality and character, he really showed how great an actor he was.
When I saw him in Fresh Prince, I immediately said, “woah, where’s the accent?”

My bullies at school didn't do karate. The guys who did karate knew that being a bully was not cool. I did karate, and once I had to defend myself, I wasn't bullied anymore.
Wax on/wax off was pure storytelling genius
We make fun of it now but in America for kids in 1984 it was magical and stuck with them...it is stupid but kids bought into the magical element of it hook line stinker cause the film took it seriously...and built it up through daniel getting upset and how it felt like he was just using the kid and the fact he told him to never question his mentorship...it's not believable but it's inspiring
Loved the film as a kid,shared it with my boy a couple of years back,n now I get to sit n watch cobra kai with him.

No other movie In my lifetime has been quoted more then this franchise...tons of life lessons ,written beautifully..actors where cast perfectly ...migayi, Daniel, the cobra kai ,Johnny, kreese ,the musical score all just perfect

Seeing this open at the theatre as a 12 years old martial arts kid that summer was a once in a lifetime experience.

Incredible movie, that paved the way for an even more incredible TV series.
What i love about this is they had NO IDEA what was to come, and quite possibly how much bigger things were going to get.
I loved this movie as a kid. My sister and I used to watch it all the time. I thought she was into karate like me, but I found out years later she had a big crush on Daniel/Ralph. She liked that he was so polite and was good at soccer lol.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies, for personal reasons. Having been bullied primarily by two people for years in school (amazingly by one kid who looked almost identical to Johnny), I felt a strong connection with Daniel, and daydreamed of doing what he did. Now?...I can't believe I'm saying it, but having just started watching Cobra Kai, Daniel seems like a dick, and I find myself almost liking Johnny. I'm only on episode 1, so...maybe this will change.

Daniel's deliberately written that way at the start to make us sympathise with Johnny more. They're giving Johnny a mountain to climb.

I admired Mifune Toshiro, one of the greatest japanese actors ever. But I'm so glad they choose Pat over him. Couldn't imagine Miyagi being played by someone else.

As someone who's seen every episode of Cobra Kai, i didn't quite realise just how much it lifts from the films, right down to Kreese's dialogue like the "open season" comment. I really should've watched the films first lol.
They lift a lot from the films cause its an homage show...something that changed lives...inspired so many kids...the classic lines are why its quoteable and rewatchable...the script is genius
the fact, even in interviews, Pat could just BECOME Mr. Miyagi with such little effort. Those are the best characters....the ones who just appear when requested by the actor
If Toshiro Mifune was casted as Mr Miyagi, He would have been a samurai Mr Miyagi who would have been more serious, and the film would have been more darker Pat Morita was more jokey, and made the film fun.
Without Ralph this film wouldn’t be remembered

Me too! It doesn't surprise me about Mifune that he acted like that. He did have a sense of humour on screen, but in a more masculine way. Pat Morita had that softer presence about him that made it easier for him to play that fatherly role that the character of Daniel needed. He could be mellow, but knew when to get serious.

I resaw the Karate Kid films after Kobra Kai and you can tell the Karate Kid franchise had a ton of heart

I can't believe that the brilliant Toshiro Mifune was considered for the part of Mr Miyagi. Pat Morita was absolutely perfect for the role though, and the performances by him and Ralph Macchio are what made this film are what made these films so great (as well as the music and direction etc). The supporting cast were fine also.

Those were some happy days, when Pat was still alive.
There have been reboots, remakes and next generation stories throughout film and television history. Out of all the ones I've seen, Cobra Kai does the best job of keeping the foundation of the original three films of the eighties and then building upon them NATURALLY. Lucasfilm should take note. THIS is how you do it. They kept the original characters authentic, they made stories for the fans, and all of the characters played real roles; no token characters. This is by far the best installment of any movie franchise. The script is tight, no wasted time. What seems like subtle mentions are actual build-ups that turn out to be believable twists. And it's all done with precise timing. Great character development and you get to see both sides of the coin this time, improving on the original storyline. Absolutely stunning.

I’m 42 and I still watch it like it’s my 1st time … I own it ,I own all of them & my wife is amazed how I find it everyday by accident and I’ll leave it on and watch it like it’s my first time and she’ll say but don’t you have it and I’ll say yea And 🤫 it’s the best, I relive my childhood every time 🙏👌😭

This was a God Blessed Flim. That all came together at the right time and the right place. and I'm proud to be a young kid to have seen it.
Another thing that made the movie so great is a lot of kids back then could relate. Whether its being the new kid in school, first crushes, fighting over those crushes, getting bullied, etc. And of course all us boys in the 80's wanted to be a karate master so we could whip bullies and get chicks.😂

I love watching this almost as much as the movie itself. There's so much kismet that goes in to classic movies. Toshiro Mifune was a legend, the Kurosawa films are among the best ever...but this is an entirely different movie without Pat Morita. Same with Martin Kove and even the Cobra Kai students.

20:40. I was googling to see who thought of the idea for wax on wax off, and I finally found out here. Makes it seem like nothing, one of the most iconic phrases in movie history.
I am so glad of this special slice of Nostalgia. Usually it’s a one off thing but to now have these great series back, man it’s so cool. Both my kids grew up the originals and now we watch the new stuff together too!! Special shout out to The Last Dragon which is shameful how new sequel was ever made. Maybe this is the time to capitalise on that mistake. Who would make a new Bruce Leeroy Green and the magnificent Shogan Of Harlem. Sho Nuff, Who is the Master !!
And this movie doesn't get enough credit for being about fatherlessness and how boys need a strong male figure to guide them. It's really the heart of the movie. Our hero and the antagonist are both young men without a father who have these surrogate fathers molding them into their idea of becoming a man. Their values are different but their methods don't actually vary much from the other, being former soldiers both have a code that values discipline and hard work. But Kreese's idea of honor and pride are warped and lack compassion and the behavior of his students reflects that. You see a lot of that "death before dishonor" mentality in the fragile egos of young fatherless boys raised by single mothers who are emotionally driven. We need more young men to be taught that being disrespected doesn't always mean you must avenge your honor in battle and that the heroic thing is actually walking away and not fighting. Though the second film probably covers that concept better than the first, as the first was more about how sometimes you have to stand up for yourself. But the essence is there, very early on Miyagi teaches Daniel that fighting should be avoided at all costs and the martial arts are a purely defensive concept.
All that said, I wonder if Miyagi ever learned why he had to save Daniel that night after the dance...
Noriyuki "Pat" Morita would've made 90 this year. Even if he lived to play Miyagi in the Cobra Kai series, I seriously doubt he'd be doing any fight scenes.

What Kung Fu tv series was to the 1970s. The Karate Kid movie was for the 1980s. Both put martial arts in a positive light. How many millions of people in America and worldwide joined Karate Dojo's after this movie we can only guess at. A charming movie with a good message aimed mainly at teenagers. But anyone of any age bracket can watch and enjoy this movie and its positive message to people to be strong, never give up and fight in the face of adversity.
I remember Daniel son and Mr Miaggi on the show Happy Days.
Daniel san was not there. For sure. I was in school. Pat Morita was the first Arnold.

This is an insight into the creative process of movie making. Even though making movies is hard work. Its very enjoyable hard work. I can imagine people who worked on this being highly motivated get up early in the morning work till late and gladly make this movie.

Excellent choice to get the director of Rocky for this film.
He added a lot to the film with his amazing long one multi faceted shot approach to scenes...he could make any scene memorable
