  • Game Changers can be small, cheap and almost for free... or expensive as hell! Today about 4 pieces of gear that made a difference to me during 2022 and why I did them. Maybe this gear changes is something you should do too!?
    I didn’t to many changes during 2022 on my gear set up, mainly because I god injured and couldn’t hike as much as i wanted but also other factors that the dollar got crazy expensive and the gear changes I wanted was mainly from US...more about that in a later episode.

    I'm glad the changes made it better for you. It's always interesting to see what others consider necessary gear. Here in Florida staying cool is the challenge since it's hot most of the time. No down jackets on my lists. I pack Ultra Light so the Thermos is out , tossed. My coffee filter is light weight ( 1.27 ounces / 36 grams ) titanium form Vargo and reusable. It brews a great cup of coffee , just add the water slowly. I believe in Freezer Bag cooking so the cozy is home made to fit the freezer bags.

    Nice job editing this video. However I must chime in here for fear others might get the idea that it's ok to deposit coffee grounds in the wilderness. Now, granted it might be different in Europe but for those in the United States let me say this.
    I've been backpacking since the 60's. Back then the mountains were pristine... we could drink right from the streams and you NEVER ran into trash or T.P.. Now there are many more people enjoying the backcountry and we need water filters and often are picking up other's trash. We have to enjoy the backcountry responsibly or there will be no more backcountry. So, with that in mind, when you travel into the mountains please leave it at least as good as you left it. "LEAVE NO TRACE" means "LEAVE NO TRACE". So please, I strongly encourage people that wish to brew fresh coffee, to pack out their coffee grounds and PLEASE don't rinse your reusable filter in the creek. Doing so is indeed damaging to the eco-system.
    Apologies Robert for posting this on your feed. I generally let things I disagree with go but this one required I step in.

      First of all thanks 🙏🏻 and yea, I know different recommendations exist based on where you hike and although coffee grains ain’t directly harmful …in some places you should always bring it with you…hence the small but I hope visible disclaimer in the video.
      When hiking in the woods I dump the coffee but out on the trail in the mountains I tend to bring it.
      Always look at the local rules and regulations, and follow them.

      @@roberthammenrudh Man, I'm going to sound like a jerk here so let me apologize in advance.
      Coffee grounds aren't good for any ecosystem. Yeah, a small amount won't hurt I suppose but if everyone starts dumping grounds and washing them in streams it will damage the natural occurring pH and therefore damage the ecosystem. It's never a good idea to introduce foreign substances to an eco-system and assume "it's good".... Again, I don't know what the rules are in Europe. They clearly seem to be different but in the U.S., regardless of where you're traveling - don't pollute.
      FWIW I used to fresh brew when I hiked in the Sierra but it was a huge mess and carrying wet grounds adds up over time so I bring freeze dried.
      Again, sorry to be a jerk about this but you have quite a few followers and I wouldn't want them to get the wrong impression about coffee grounds.

    The coffee filter was a game changer for me too. The joy of good coffee, when out in nature is highly underrated. And my kitchen setup plus two 250 ml seatosummit cups still weights less, than the thermo bottle I used to carry. Plus the coffee is fresh and hot, not stail and lukewarm.

      Thanks….Yea only trail runners. If wet they dry during walking or during night. Only hike during 3 seasons so not winter even if it can be down to -5 on occasion.
      No problems for these kind of temperatures in my experience.

    • @roberthammenrudh
      @roberthammenrudh  Před rokem +1

      Well that not very easy either because conical filters are not very common, or at least not here…most of them have a flat bottom!
      The main reason here are the weight saving and ease of use and no waste. The filters just something I found a bit irritating 😄
