Our goal with these Tribal decks was to build them as strong as we could; however, we realize that we may have been too lax with the restrictions we set. The restrictions we originally set for the 'tribal' portion of the deck was a member of the Tribe in the command zone, a sizable amount of permanents that belong to the tribe, and tribal-based win conditions. We wanted to experiment and restrict the deckbuilding a bit, but we were still trying to build strong and fast decks. We apologize if our decisions affected your entertainment of this video and we will strive to improve moving forward.
What are your thoughts on these themed / somewhat gimmick-y games in-between seasons? We have some other themes in mind (For example, we are thinking of doing an episode of Blind Commander after Season 2 ends) but are there any other themes similar to this you're interested in seeing, let us know!
Also, if one video isn't enough EDH for you today, we will be livestreaming some EDH gameplay on CZcams starting at 7:30PM EST tonight (Feb 21). We'd love to see you there!

I feel like Oracle Consultation is cheating, even if Thrasios is a Merfolk. Dragons meant to kill with dragons, slivers tried to kill with slivers, goblins tried to kill with goblins, and Merfolk tried to combo off with something hardly related to merfolk--extra turn shenanigans until hitting the insta-win. If Merfolk aren't strong enough, just choose a better tribe.

Tbh I think this game would have been a lot better (as in, more what it should have been) if Tymna had just not been allowed to be cast. I understand the need for the 4 colours, just don't cast her. Thrasios is honestly strong enough without Tymna, and I think it was Tymna herself drawing some 8 cards which mostly warped what happened away from feeling Merfolk enough.

Other than that we built the decks to be as strong as possible. It may not have seemed like it, but if Jordan had gotten to his turn he could have taken 2 people out of the game, and Nate was very close to having what he needed as well. I would have preferred if you guys had found another deck to replace Merfolk. I didn't enjoy seeing it go off when I was promised a tribal shoot out. I think lots of other tribes could have been powerful - Wizards, Rats, Eggs, or even Zombies. Yes it fit the definition of tribal, but to me it wasn't what I was hoping to watch. All the other decks looked like they wanted to win through damage or combat damage and the Merfolk deck didn't fit that paradigm. I think if you do another tribal deck showdown you should include the restriction of no alternate win cons to ensure the decks all fit well with each other.

    - Sygg, River Cutthroat can play a solid controlling game

The fact that the "Merfolk Tribal Deck" named 'Humans' on its cavern of souls should have been a dead giveaway that the deck wasn't a tribal deck. And sure, you all have powerful decks that win turn 4-7, but a Kumena taking turns deck, with tap untap shenanigans, to eventually almost draw yourself out to Oracle win would have been more flavourful, enjoyable and more in the spirit of this game. I think the problem is more that the consultation win condition feels out of place compared to the other tribal decks, not in terms of power or speed but just thematics. The reason the deck looked so powerful was because he got to draw at least 6 cards off the early 2 drop from opponents losing 3 life, and then 8 more over several extra turns from Tymna. He was just massively ahead in card advantage and we all see the results. Removing some of those advantage pieces instead of the other things that were targeted by, say, the Drakuseth trigger probably would have been wise. They mentioned that the deck looked bad in play testing, so maybe that caused the others to let their guard down.

But the fishies definitely piggybacked on Krenko's Defense Grid, so who knows?

@@CasuallyCompetitiveMTG I have played and played against a ton of very powerful tribal decks, and I have never come across a situation where I needed one of the best cEDH wincons in the game and the best partner pairing in the game to beat them. I have seen a kumena tyrant of orazca merfolk deck that absolutely dominated a game against other powerful decks, there was no need to make the deck tymna thrasios. and if you really do not think that merfolk could compete, build a different tribe. There are other options that can easily compete with the other tribal decks. I really enjoy watching powered up decks that are not to the level of cEDH, that was what I was looking forward to watching, not another consultation deck

I know the purpose was to make the tribes as competitive as possible, but abusing the Tymna ability to draw cards definitely broke the game, and since she's not a merfolk, kinda went against the spirit of the game imo. I feel like this was the sort of game you have at an LGS or GP where you sit down and everyone says they're playing a 6 or 7 and then someone plays a top tier cEDH deck and wins without anyone being able to interact. Personally, if I were at this type of pod/table, I would've gotten up after this game and looked for another group to play with. Just not very enjoyable to watch one deck play solitaire and everyone else just sit on their hands since they have nothing to do.

I enjoyed this game a lot! I think a lot of people are critiquing how the merfolk deck wasn't "on theme" or "not really tribal" but i think really the difference is the power level everybody aimed for seems to just be different. Both Dragons and Slivers are in 5c but seemed to assume that everything that happened was going to be on the battlefield, whereas merfolk won the game on the stack through all its spells. I think the lack of communication was more in the need for counterspells or the adherence to typical CEDH norms than it was to tribes. Loved the video though! Makes me want to put a Sygg in my Pod decks :)

Recent follower here (you’re part of my confinement lunch routine now when the lady is at work), I have to admit I agree with what most other commenters have said : 1. Hard to argue that Merfolk commanders are lacking in terms of colors when you have a mono red deck at the table, you could have gone Azorius, Simic, Dimir (which would even allow for Consult Oracle, but like “legally”) or even Thrasios without any partner to stay on theme (and who’s probably powerful on his own)n 2. Gudul Lurker isn’t a Merfolk but ok he’s a water creature, except you probably only included it for value with Tymna ; 3. Even in play, Cavern of Souls for Humans made me cringe as, again, it was against the spirit of this more light-hearted episode ; 4. This was a good opportunity to show something else than the now-common Oracle Consult win ; 5. After all this, if Merfolk wasn’t a “suitable” tribe for you, you probably could have chosen another tribe in the whole Magic universe. I don’t mean to be harsh as I really enjoy the show, but I was curious to see some more pushed tribal gameplay... but then we didn’t. Hope you guys can do another episode like this with maybe different rules so that we can see some different things! Keep up the amazing work and stay safe! Virtual high fives from France 🇫🇷

Three were non cEDH level commanders optimized, a delight and inspiration to casual players who own and play with casual commander (I myself own budget versions of Krenko and the Ur-Dragon). One was not only a cEDH level pair, but THE TIER ZERO pair, completely off theme, digging for the most boring win con available. Kumena full tribal or even Turns would have been sweet. Cheers!

After watching it I am really disappointed with the Tymna inclusion.. You could have done any other tribe and still had it been Tribal, Vampire Zombie or even Elf would have been a lot more thematic than, T&T Tier 0 commander combo vs Actual Tribal. I get that it got lucky but even if it flopped terribly I would have been disappointed. If you are going to commit to a theme please COMMIT to it. I mean when a tribal deck wants to name something other than its tribe for CoS that might be proof enough..

Love your content but didn't really care for this video, I know your getting that lot in the comments. I feel that part of the reason why people are not liking this video is because in it you say this is a powered up tribal video, but the deck that won felt more like a powered down consultation oracle with some merfolk in it and not really merfolk tribal. I understand that you said you built this deck before the consultation oracle combo came out and that you and the guys agree that it is the weakest of the decks, but then did you truly power up merfolk as a tribe or just powered down consultation oracle by slotting in some merfolk?
I understand that you have said that the restrictions was just to have a tribe member in the command zone, most of your creatures had to be in to the tribe, and you had to have a tribal win con. Kumena would have been a better choice, I feel, for what people were expecting, you can still run oracle as your win con and do it effectively with some dramatic scepter infinite mana into infinite draw with the ability to chord/finale of devastation into your oracle. You can still be on your original plan of Edric turns as well.
Like I said love your content I was enjoying the video, till the consultation oracle, I hope the criticism doesn't impact you guys negatively and you keep making videos like this. Can't wait till the next one!

So, the thing that gets me is that he said that he needed black and white because green and blue just wasn't good enough, but the only black cards in the deck are tutors, two of which are win cons with Oracle, Sygg, which is a good creature, and two creatures with evasion that are really only there because of Tymna. The only white cards is a creature that helps thin out the library, other Sygg, which is to give creatures evasion for Tymna, Silence (don't have a case against Silence, but doesn't really belong), and an instant that creates two 1/1 merfolks, which, in my opinion, could have easily been replaced by Aquatic Incursion or Deeproot Waters.

I enjoy watching your videos, but I have to agree with a lot of people here in the comments section that running T&T as a "merfolk" deck is getting into some very fine-print levels of technicality, and felt more like a good reason to exploit the fact that Thassa's Oracle is a Merfolk than anything. That being said, I've seen Scion of the Ur-Dragon in action and believe you when you say 2 people would have died on the untap, that's totally reasonable from that deck.
Slivers and Goblins both felt rather anemic as well, but given we only see one video and not the full testing process I can't say much more.
In short, T&T winning through a tier 0 cEDH wincon felt disingenuous, but that's life. I look forward to your next video, thank you for the quality content.
