    What is the science behind retinol?
    Retinol belongs to the powerful family of molecules known as retinoids. These are vitamin A derivatives with multiple functions in the skin including reduction of pigmentation, improved cellular turnover, stimulation of collagen synthesis, & reduction of oil production.
    What are the benefits of retinol?
    Improved skin texture & quality. Retinol has antioxidant, anti-acne, anti-inflammatory, as well as antibacterial properties, hence its use in acne prone skin.
    Anti-aging. Retinol decreases pigmentation but increases collagen production. This results in clearer skin texture with less wrinkles & smaller pores.

    Don't forget to mention that retinol should never be used around the eyes (even though you would really want to) because it is proven to damage the oil glands that moisturize the eye and over time can lead to dry eye disease (which may even be irreversible). There are way too many dermatologist videos on the topic that only consider the effects on the skin, but if you also check out what the opthalmologists are saying, they're pretty clear on the issue...

      Damn, I'd better stop using it around my eyes! I already have dry eyes to begin with. But what if it migrates there from elsewhere on your face, since people usually use it at night and then go to sleep with their face on a pillow?

    • @aszechy
      @aszechy Před rokem +37

      @@SchlichteToven Yes, that can be an issue too, but I guess they don't know exactly. The video I saw said to leave out a huge area corresponding to where a sleep mask would be - that's essentially half your face... (I personally don't leave that much out but try to put the retinol on at least an hour before bed so it has time to absorb properly before I hit the pillow.) I guess you could try to experiment, maybe cut it out entirely for a while and see if your eyes improve.
