This New GameCube Controller Surprised Me

  • The GameCube is still getting new accessories in 2021 with the latest controller being a reproduction of the Hori controller that was designed for the Gameboy Player back in the early 2000's. This one comes to us from Old Skool and while I haven't been thrilled with their previous products this controller actually surprised me.

“Old school” should look at these reviews they are getting for their control and makes a 2.0 model with a better D-Pad or one that fits better with an original SNES D-Pad. That way you can replace it yourself.

Funny thing, I just paid $200 for the Hori controller this model is based on. It's the most expensive controller I've ever purchased and my wallet is crying lol. But I got in the mail last week and I really like it.
Honestly, what surprised ME is the fact that the Hori controller works not only with RE4 but Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. Aiming in Twin Snakes is awkward because of Z being turned into a face button, but otherwise it's cool. And on RE4 the controller is excellent.
It also works amazingly on the classic RE games. They all have built-in D-Pad Support, which makes sense since RE was originally designed for pre-Dualshock PlayStation controllers.
And yeah, it's also great GB/GBC/GBA games.
But your solution of buying Old Skool's model and swapping in a SNES controller's D-Pad is a brilliant and cost-effective alternative.
If anyone wants a controller like this, I say go with Spawn Wave's solution unless you're like me and you really really want the legit product...for $200.

So I do have one of these and use it frequently for playing gb/gbc/gba on my gamecube - and it's great. I don't think there's anything wrong with the d-pad as is, especially after you break it in a little with normal use.
So anyone looking to buy one, I'd say don't worry about "needing" to do a swap or mod. It's fine as is.

If your concerned about the feel and quality being off you could always pair a raphnet adapter with an oem snes controller. I know alot of 3rd party controllers use cheap feeling buttons, gamecube especially.
You could also take it a step further and pair an 8bitdo snes wireless reciever with the raphnet adapter so you can use bluetooth snes controllers on your gamecube.

I have that *HORI controller,* the way I got it was kind of special.
I worked at a non profit integration PC recycling facility call "INSERTECH", where they would accept old PC and electronic from people to recycle the part form different donation into "new" rebuild PC for cheap prices, they took any tech stuff, that include video game stuff, but what they don't tell people is that the only things they actually reuse IS PC parts, anything else was smashed for the gold from PCB and/or the cables cut for the copper.
So basically there was that one day I came to work and there was a big box (and mean BIG BOX) full of a lot of video game stuff, cables, accessories, controllers and actual consoles (a SNES and an Xbox 360), everything was in really good condition, so I picked the box and gone ask the boss if I could buy it from them, not selling the box to me would have been a dumb decision since they would barely get anything from the raw material anyway, so he did sold the box to me for 40$, that was such a good deal, I can tell you that SNES alone was worth more than he asked for, unfortunately the 360 20GB hard drive had to be wipe (I know that stupid, 'cause without the encryption key from Micro$oft, the HDD doesn't work in the console anymore), the place give a warranty that all data would be completely destroy, so nothing I could have done about that.
But anyway, that GC HORI controller was one of the many other controller in the box... just imagining I had not been there when that box showed up is killing me, 'cause it would basically had been destroy completely for almost noting... it still hunts me to think that this was happening before I had been there and still possibly happens as I typing all this. (o_o)
*TL;DR:* The controller would have been destroy and thrown away if I had not been there to save it. 😰

The original GameCube controller was almost toy-like, but in an ergonomical way - the oversized A-button, exaggerated shoulder triggers, and nubby C-stick. While not the most practical at times, it was sure a lot of fun to use. I need to buy one with ZL and ZR buttons so I can use that glorious thing wherever.

Out of the box, I found this controller's down-left point on the d pad was hard to register. And it fixed itself after I opened the controller and put it back together. Didn't even do any real modifications. Now it's really nice for the GameCube Tony Hawk games in particular. And of course I'll have use for it for Game Boy games. Could be better, glad it exists. Hopefully this will lead to even higher quality versions of this layout from other companies for a reasonable price.

Well on the HORI one, I can tell you that the GC buttons (minus the Z) fells just a little bit mushier than the original GameCube, the D-pad is probably better than the one you bought, it's really close to the one from SNES, but just not quite there though.

You can get the Raphnet Classic Controller to GameCube adapter and connect an 8BitDo SN30 2.4g SNES controller to the GameCube. You mentioned wanting a wireless version and that’s what I use and both the raphnet adapter and the controller are low latency! Just Google raphnet Classic controller to GameCube. It even supports custom button mappings‘s and in my opinion the layout is much better than the Hori/GameCube button layout for GBA/GB/GBC games because you get all buttons equally sized and spaced, instead of the exaggerated A, and shrunken X, Y and B buttons (which are great for 3D GC games but not 2D games).

Just like the Xbox one controller and Switch Pro controller, the GameCube controller is very comfortable..

This should have been compared vs the HORI controller which looks pretty much the same. Also, there are SNES to Gamecube adapters... So I kinda wish this controller looked more like the SNES controller than the HORI. But love that you changed the DPAD rubber with a snes controllers :D

A Controller with a rubbish D-Pad is not worth getting, unfortunately pretty much every Controller nowadays has a terrible D-Pad, the SNES D-Pad is the Pinnacle and that's 30yrs Old.

i can't remember where I got it from but I got my hands on a adapter to use a snes pad on the gamecube, and it is the absolute best way to use the gbplayer. I believe it is very price comparable if I remember correctly.
