Yeah MLP sorry I forgot to tell you last time but the OEM dpad kinda sucks for fighting games lmao. It’s serviceable for just about everything else though and especially the Castlevania GBA games which I used to play a lot of. Why Nintendo didn’t just outright make us a new Super Nintendo controller back then for the GBA player with the Gamecubes various color layouts to match a particular Cube is anyone’s guess. My guess is they probably thought people would be against them going with a past design and that it would go against their reputation as an innovator but hey as I say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. We’d of been perfectly happy with a GBA player Super Nintendo controller that was black or purple with the buttons and d pad all being Super Nintendo sized but with the corresponding GameCube controllers button color scheme.
Why doesn’t Hori just make a controller... seriously. Huge missed opportunity.
Ordered one of these controllers via eBay when you first showed it off and as soon as I got it I tried several d-pads from a couple SNES clone controllers. No matter which ones I tried I couldn't get any of their d-pad/membranes to function 100% correctly (mainly not being able to press down without using an abnormal amount of force). Eventually just pulled out an old original SNES controller that died on me years ago and put that d-pad/membrane in (had to use a handheld electric rotary tool to modify (grind down) the sides of the d-pad to make it just small enough to fit correctly). It works perfectly and a lot better than the original d-pad that came with the controller. Been replaying Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance as a test for the new d-pad and haven't had a single problem yet so I'm pretty happy about using this instead of the original Hori controller.
I actually have a Hori, so this was interesting seeing what it looked like on the inside! Glad there's an alternative finally!
Dudes videos are awesome! Definitely worth watching.
Im still super glad I bought the original Hori pad back when they were $50.
The Wii U d-pad seems to work pretty good with the Old Skool controller even with the Old Skool membrane.
I sanded down the edge with 100 grit on the OG SNES D-Pad, then cleaned it up with 500 grit after it fit. Works great now.
Iam so god damn happy this alternative to the horipad exists now!
P.S.
I was the guy from canada that bought dreams from your shop,
over all I highly recommend your store.
*One small criticism though:*
you packed the game to tightly resulting in me cutting into the front plastic on the case by accident,
I recommend leaving a bit of room to cut into.
What a great video. You are definitely correct about the Dpad on the old skool controller. However your genius ideas work awesome for upgrading the controller to make it almost as good as the original Hori controller. I found that the SFC controllers that were made before 1992 usually have the dpad that will fit the old skool controllers. That official Nintendo silicone pad under the dpad works perfectly and the SFC L and R buttons feel more comfortable and responsive than the standard old skool ones….the metal bar makes the difference I guess.
Can you share a link for the small screen you are using ?

@@Madlittlepixel Thanks !
Picked up one of these thanks to your video. Ended up taking it apart and replaced the Dpad with one from a SNES-mini controller, had to sand down the Dpad a bit to get it to fit in there. Also had an issue getting the SNES-mini Dpad membrane to fit so I had to use the one that came with the Old Skool clone unfortunately. Tried putting in triggers as well but the poles on the SNES-mini are too big. I have some spare OEM SNES and Super Famicom controllers so I may open those up and try to use parts from there to further mod the Old Skool clone. Overall though it's a great controller, very happy with it. Thanks again for the videos, been waiting years for a cheaper alternative to the Hori pad
I got an old skool controller and I upgraded it with parts from an old Super Famicom controller used the dpad and membrane and the L and R buttons…..with those things it almost feels like the Hori controller.
@@benjaminkitaura498 Funny you say this because that's exactly what I ended up doing after my comment! Had a spare super yellowed out SFC controller and used the shoulders and dpad on it, works much better now
A part to part teardown of the controller, makes it simpler to fix the fault.
The Old Skool and a broken SNES controller is still cheaper than the HORI one. Now I need a USB version (with improved dpad).
You can get inexpensive gamecube to usb converters online that work really well.

This controller can actually be pretty amazing with a few super simple mods: I highly recommend swapping the stock dpad/membrane with an OEM Wii Classic Controller dpad/membrane, the difference is night and day.
The reason I even tried this was because I first wanted to do it with an OEM SNES dpad/membrane, but the dpad just wouldn't fit inside the old skool controller shell.
If you even wanna go further I also recommend swapping the L/R shoulder membranes with ones from an OEM SNES controller.
Do you need to trim anything for the dpad and membrane to fit from the wii classic?
The classic controller membraine has a small round protrusion that needs to be cut off so that it can lay flush on top of the dpad. I will take pictures and show you.
@@b3nner Perfect thank you. I think i have a few classic controllers in my storage office. I should try this mod out i see what to cut off
This is why we love you
I believe the mortoff games membrane is close to stock snes. I've got one coming later in the week, I'll report back.
What was the result?
@@zetakon perfect match to the original snes.
Hori controller at the price has basically just become a collectors piece at that price. The Old Skool controller is perfect for the $20 it costs
Do you recommend the silicone replacement available at Stone Age gamer for this controller?
Can we get a up close pic of the Hori board?
I just compared the mortoff membrane to the original and it's damn near identical. Same material, same mold, same feel. Much closer than the console 5. They're only a few bucks with free shipping and you don't have to sacrifice an original controller to the video game gods...
the problem with oldskool and 3rd party dpad rubber replacement is the conductive carbon on the rubber isnt wide enough so diagonal is harder to press.
My D-pad wouldn't register the down input unless I pressed harder than normal. I think these D-pad issues happen because the shell castings on the Old Skool controllers are not of great quality. Mine had extra plastic on top of the screw posts which put unnecessary pressure on one side of the board so I had to sand it off. Tightening the screws all the way was also the culprit and loosening them just a bit made it function just as good as any Nintendo OEM D-pad. This is just from personal experience but I feel all of these controllers suffer from the same shell casting quality.
My triggers are really stiff. Like I have to really jam them down for them to register. It's not a simple click. It's like a soft long mushy sinking feeling. Did you have the same problem? Playing fzero maximum velocity on my gba player and I feel like I'm having to jam down on the triggers to get them to activate.
Definitely you should try using the L and R buttons from a Super Famicom controller
The feel you are used to can make a big difference. I know if you give me a SNES, PS1/2 or very similar controller with Street Fighter Alpha 3I can kick some arse. But give me just about anything else, joystick included, I can't pull off moves with regularity. I just never got used anything else.
@Madlittlepixle... Can you see if the old skool controller is compatible with the blissbox or switch usb adapter for GC to usb?
Great review. Do you have a review for any 3rd party sega saturn ones? I want to eventually do a multi system PCB for it but I want to know if it's worth it.
Right on MLP. Thank you for the review.
Aight then.
You sounds different or is it just me?
No idea. Sometimes I record with a wireless lapel mic from rode and sometimes I record using a shure sm7b with preamp and post processor. This was recorded with the rode like most of my previous vids as of late. I do some basic processing when I record this way because it sounds very bad raw, but i just normalize, do a filter curve pass and put a bit of compression.
Maybe its just mine but I did notice that holding down the r button requires a good amount of pressure on the Old Skool. I dont know how that compares to the hori but it makes it a bit difficult to shoot in place in Gunstar Super Heroes.
A game of culture
You should definitely upgrade your L and R buttons with ones from a Super Famicom controller…..so much better……a little trickier to line up when closing the shell so be careful.
fill that groove in with some permatex silicone.
Does a gamecube controller's pads/buttons work in place of the ABXY?
They don't straight from the Gamecube controller. The buttons and pad from a Gamecube controller have a different form factor than the Old Skool controller, and don't fit.
I have a controller just ike this in a bag of untested controllers I received for free once... But this was beat up and old... But looked just like this for gamecube. I thought "before the wii, what could have this been for, the zelda collection disc?"
Speaking of crazy controllers, have you ever seen the NeoGeo CD style controller for the PS2? I was gonna buy one for $85 shipped, which was a pretty good deal from what other ppl were charging, but it sold. Dont know you h\may of reviewed it already and I just missed it. I love weird controllers, and that PS2 NeoGeo one seemed really cool.
I have the PS3 version (USB-based) and it's a solid controller! Think it just adds a "Home" button, but you can use it with a PC as well (and switch to X-input by holding down the Start and Select buttons when plugging it in). That might be rarer than the PS2 controller though. If you can, GET IT!!!
@@RamuneRabbit Wow, didnt know theres one for the PS3 ! Thanks for the info!
You couldn't pull off the hadookies, dragonkiss, or hurricanepigs? That's a problem
I've got to wonder how much wear on an older controller affects the feel -- granted if the membranes have a poorer design that's not going to wear the same.
My only complaint with the design is the placement of the Z button. I use my GC controller on the wii when playing certain gba or snes games on emulator, and having the z button as select be on the shoulder makes certain games play smoother. For example I can't play super metroid on any other controller.
My old SNES Controllers are working. I don’t wanna take apart one of my working SNES Controller just to get a D-Pad Membrane for Old Skool GameCube Digital Controller.
Where can I buy SNES D-Pad Membrane for Old Skool GameCube Digital Controller?
Just pick up a cheap Super Famicom controller from a yard sale or a thrift store for cheap and use it for parts
Are their GameCube games this would work with on the Wii? Is it compatible with the Wii?
Anything with a GameCube controllers input should work with a Wii no problem. And there are some GameCube games that would make great use of this, like Viewtiful Joe, Sonic Mega Collection/Gems Collection, the Megaman collections.
And if you have any Virtual Console games on Wii, this would work great! Also, 2D or menu based games like Phantom Brave would be great, too
I'm still waiting for a version made by 8bitdo or Retrobit
8bitdo is a chinese manufacturer of cheaply-built controllers with worse than poor customer support and questionable design choices in their dpads.. why not just buy the old skool controller than is readily available?
@@danieljimenez1989 i have a snes30 pro wired for pc and it works incredibly well. for both 2d games, fighting games and 3d games. in the video it shows the internal quality of the old school digital controller does not compare with the hori. the internal part of 8bitdo's controls is much better, even though it is a "Chinese" company, which for me doesn't make the biggest difference since most things are done right there.
@@danieljimenez1989 their dpads have been pretty good in my experience, much better than most 3rd party options. The only part of their controllers that feel cheap to me are the analog sticks
Try piercing the dpad membrane with pin tack or fine needle at the dimples
Why?
Wish it was wireless. I just can’t go backwards to wired controllers across the floor.
Always the d-pad. Is it that difficult to make a decent one. I thought nintendo’s patent ran out.
Can I use it for the wii?
Yep! As long as it has GameCube controller ports
The hori cable is longer than 6 feet . Ik because i had to hokd it eat above my head to clean the cord and im 6 foot. Id say its 8 to 10 feet long. The og hori pad
I received one of these old skool knock offs last week and it has a stuck z button out of the box... definitely not the same quality as the original.
I've already been hearing as well reports on buttons sticking on this controller. You get what you pay for just the way it is. I was lucky and purchased 2 Hori GameCube GBP controller pads years ago before they shot up in price. Paid about $50.00 a piece brand new from Japan.
I understand this is basically a remake of the Hori pad, but I don't understand why it has the weird Gamecube face button layout. The lack of an analog stick makes this controller practically useless for Gamecube games, so it's really just for the Game Boy player. But if this is only for the Game Boy player, then why keep the weird Gamecube face button layout? Is it just a physical appearance gimmick to show that this thing is meant to be used on a Gamecube? I have the Raphnet classic to Gamecube adapter, and I think that plus a SNES classic controller is the best option for Gameboy player.
People used the hori for other games on the Gamecube as well. But with this being a clone of that controller if it didnt retain the original Gamecube layout it wouldnt be a clone... And most likely wouldnt have gotten much in the way of attention or sales, i could be wrong... But i know it wouldnt have caught my attention without being what it is.
What about fitting Gamecube buttons and conductive pads?
I can check, but I don't feel its needed. The dpad is the biggest issue, though a few of these ive messed with the Z button membrane seems to vary on stiffness.
It's definitely not a one to one fit. I gave this a shot the other day, and they don't seem to work unless you're willing to do some major modifying to the Gamecube buttons and pad, or Old Skool controller itself to the point where you might be compromising the feel of these components.
Hello, were you able to do it? I would also like to replace the rubber and the B-A-X-Y buttons
👍
The question is, why they keep making those shitty membranes? 😅 Most of alternative controllers have the same issue
Those made in China membranes are horrible however the made in Japan ones from over 30 years ago are still awesome and cheap because you can find a ton of Super Famicom controllers for under a dollar……at a garage sale or thrift stores.
Is this your real voice 🤔
No, but its also not, not my real voice.
$200 vs $20....humm I wonder what one I'm going to get. lol
Too bad you can't shave down the membrane grooves
Strangest thing, you sound different 🤷🏽♂️
I dunno, ive seen a couple comments saying this... but nothing has changed with how I record audio over the past couple months when I do these on the table reviews. Audio is processed, but processed the same way as all my audio on these types of videos has been. I have been feeling like crap for a couple days so maybe that? I dunno lol
I wish they make one for the SNES and NES mini.😕
The crappiest port of street fighter alpha 3 gba.
