Probably been said already, but alongside "Born in the USA", which is not a patriotic song, and "Every Breathe You Take" which is certainly not a romantic song, this is one of the great misinterpreted songs out there. People think it's about an arrogant belief that England fans are supposed to have, that they always think England are going to win. It's actually a song about defiantly dreaming of success, even if deep down you feel it'll end in tears. It wouldn't resonate with the fans so much if it wasn't true. "Football's coming home" was simply just a reference to the tournament in 1996 (when the song came out) being held in England, the home of football.

Yeah, a bit of an eye opener when you find out what the police are singing about. I do find it funny when I hear ppl sing the line "jewels remaining" and claim their football fans even when you correct the line and they say "what's that"? It's at that point my head is in my hands.

    Thank you Kid!
This song was written and sung by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel who had a football comedy show in the early 90's called Fantasy Football League. The music was performed by the Lightning Seeds and it was the official song of England team for the European Championships in 1996.
The tournament was held in England which is where the modern game and rules were created, hence the 'It's Coming Home'. The Three Lions is the crest/badge on the England team shirt and is often referred to as a nickname for the team.
In 1996 England went out to Germany in the semi-final with the score at 1-1 after 90 minutes + additional extra time of 30 minutes, the game went to penalties. Each team scored all of their 5 penalties so after that it goes to sudden death (miss and the other team score and you're out) a young Gareth Southgate missed and Andreas Möller scored, England were out.
Redemption often comes in the most unlikely of circumstances. 25 years later Gareth Southgate now manager has lead us to our first Final in 55 years, we will play an extremely good Italy team on Sunday in the European Championship Final... It's Coming Home?

They really do deserve to be in the final, and like you said, everyone will be believing in England like the nation used to. If they win the Euros, I believe that'll give them the confidence to take them to the World Cup finals! I knew back in 2018 that England getting to the semis was just the start of all the good to come, especially when everyone doubted that the team at the time, could even get that far, as most of them were still fresh and young, now they've come to the Euros kicking ass!

Just to explain the song @bxkid7, without tripping over any minefields or insulting any other team:
The song Three Lions (football’s coming home) takes place 30 years later in 1996, after our first (and only) trophy win in 1966, a time where, after many hollow years of “ever so close” or “so close yet far away”, a new team brought football spirit back to England.
Despite many assumption of arrogance, and it may certainly seem that way if people listen to English hooligans, the song represents a forlorn and scorned hope that England will one day be a top contender like we were in 1966.
It’s been 55 years, hopefully, our long drought will finally be over.

This song is only about the English national team (3 lions is the English badge). The song is about England and then, when the Euros were being played in England we had not won an international trophy for 30 years. The chorus say Jules Rimet still gleaming, Jules Rimet trophy is the World Cup Trophy and the World Cup is the biggest sporting event on the planet, the Olympics is second and we won it in 1966 and then nothing since. This song is about how England have been so disappointing ever since and every international tournament they throw it away. On Sunday we were in the finals of the Euros V Italy and we lost, on penalties again! The reference 'it's coming home' is that England is the birthplace of football but now the whole world are doling better at us and we just want football (a trophy) to come home.

  • @jonathanrobertatkinsonphotog

someone has probably already mentioned this but anyways, this song is referring to the England national football team in major competitions. the song was published in 1996 for the Euro's which was held in England, however, the song has a double meaning as it's widely agreed football was created or at least its rules was formally written down in England so here in England, we view the spiritual home of the sport as being England. it's also a reminder of the fact England hasn't won anything since the 1966 world cup, a few near misses but no trophies for 55 years. It sort of become a rallying cry to get behind the lads and to remind ourselves not to expect too much....but hope cause you never know. The reason this is popular again is England has reached the Euros final for the first time and the first final in 55 years since 1966 and the match will be played tomorrow at Wembley Stadium in London...also the location of that 1966 final and the manager of the England side is the man who missed a crucial penalty in 1996 the when this song was released and that missed meant England didn't make the final that year. It's difficult to describe to an American as Americans don't have international sports in the same way, the closest thing Americans might relate it to is the Olympic's. oh and one more thing....IT'S COMING HOME!!!

This song is about the England national team which last won a major tournament, the World Cup, in 1966. Watching them get to semi-finals and lose every one has been torment for the whole countryever since. This song was written for the 1996 European Championship - hence 30 years of hurt since England won the World Cup. It's 55 years of hurt now but on Sunday England will play Italy in the final of the European Championships so it might just be coming home this time around. A nation holds its breath.

this song came out in 1996 for the Euro's, which is a tournament for all the national reams in Europe.
The funny thing about this song is, Germany won the tournament, and the great thing about the German fans is, when they are beating/beat English teams they start singing in English, and German fans are loud, Germans are my favourite clubs away fans actually.
So when back in Germany parading the trophy, the German fans sang "Footballs coming home" PMSL...... And they say Germans have no sense of humour, bollox, they are well funny
