I personally like Tom Nook. I mean sure he puts you in debt immediately once you move in but he never forces you to pay your debt and doesn't even add interest while banks would when you take a loan. There is no bad affect of not paying the debt other than not being able to expand your house. Anyways I personally like him but I still enjoyed the song and video (I got all this from Jzwitts video)

There is some..slightly hidden backstory to why Tom is the way he is and he's honestly NOT that bad, it's mostly the first impression western gamers had of him from the first Gamecube game that made it over here. Also Tom Nook is not actually a racoon..he's a Tanuki and they have quite the connection to money and profit in Japanese history. One of the reasons Tom gives out a loan with no interest is he was swindled out of everything he owned after moving to the city to try and make it big and the banks wouldn't give him a loan without huge interest fees or a strict time to pay it back..so he donates 90% of his profits to charities and is trying to teach people responsibility even if he's viewed as the bad guy, it's why he took on Timmy and Tommy as students to teach them good work and business practices..and no they aren't related by blood even though all three are Tanuki. It's hinted at that it was likely Crazy Redd that did the con job and it's why Tom isn't a big fan of foxes..also a connection as Tanuki and Kitsune tend to either be friends..or more often in stories from Japan enemies that try to one up each other but more often than not the Tanuki are more pranksters than villains, also historically Tanuki skin was used to soften hammer blows when molding gold into shape in old Japan so that's why they have a connection to money. I just summed up the highlights but I highly recommend the video if anyone is 1) a fan of Animal Crossing and 2) Wants to know more about Tom Nook beyond the perception he's a nasty loan shark.
Plus, if you look at the overall economy based on item prices, those millions of bells are actually a steal, dudes doing you a favor and charging a fraction of the real cost, which you not only dont have to pay off right away, or even at all if you like the house as is, it comes WITH NO INTEREST
Personally I like him. Ye sure he has an entire island that he needs to pay to maintain to make it inhabitable for us costs alot for you it's not like he says "You can pay this in your own time" and puts no pressure for you to pay, he makes you a house within a day, donates a high percentage to charity he only ever mentions in happy home designer cuz he doesn't even want the vertue signalling, he took Timmy and Tommy under his wing as they use to be orphans with no family. All through out he has done nothing but help the player, giving them a job in the og game, he has never pressured anyone to pay with interest despite the fact he lives in his shop "nooks cranny", he was homeless. Tom nook is the man we should all strive to be.
Once I was at dizzys house and he started picking at the games logic and questioning whether it's real or if were just for another's entertainment and then started shivering saying how we should've stopped a long long time ago, then paused and said that he ate 5 bags of chips last night and fell asleep with the TV on freaked me out
Tom nook had a sad childhood. He made the getaway to give us the childhood he didnt got. He know that some ppl hates him, but he doesnt care because at least he teach us that life is sometimes hard, but to continue living on.
I actually admire Nook, everyone calls him a crook, but you're not the one with the connections. You're not the one building a house. You're not the one handling the electricity, wallpaper, plumbing, flooring, and all the other things. He is. He manages a company and he's helping you build a town from scratch. He has to cover himself SOMEHOW. Look it's not like he's charging rent or doubling it over time. You pay at your pace. He's being generous considering how our society functions. I mean we just have to pay him for his work and then done. He doesn't bill you if your satisfied with the shack you got. He bills you for expensive, costly, overnight construction that shouldn't feasibly be possible. He works tirelessly and I would say he is being more than lenient with you. Tom might actually be losing money. We sell stuff to him and he gives us money that we use to pay off our stuff. An example, Turnips. The turnips don’t cost too much but we earn much more than what we bought it with when we sell it. They’re getting turnips for more than they actually cost.

Speaking of Animal Crossing: New Horizon, have you ever seen clips of live-streamers visiting some of the more...eccentric types of islanders? One example could be found in a CZcams video called "Minato Aqua visits psychopathic island" by Vtuber for ALL. Another example would be found in another video called "Uruha Rushia visits a Crazy Matsuri Fan's Island" by StickNut. There be weirdos on those island. :P

I always assumed bells were equivalent to Yen, not dollars (since, ya know, it's a Japanese made game). 113.76 Yen is equal to 1 US dollar, so if Tom Nook charges you 2,498,000 bells for one of your housing upgrades (which he does, that's they last loan amount), that's equal to $21,958.51 (rounded up), which isn't that bad considering he's retroactively fitting your house with a basement at that point. You also gotta keep in mind how easy it is to earn bells. I payed off the first couple of loans within a day each because I started playing during summer and sharks sell for a ton of bells. But even when the big earning fish are out of season, you can make a fair bit by playing the stalk market, or if you don't wanna gamble on the stalk market, buy a ton of pumpkin plants from Leif and make sure to water them every day (including days you pick the plants) so you turn a huge profit when all those pumpkin plants give you 3 pumpkins, which sell for 350 bells each. I think the longest it took me to pay off a loan (not including time I spent not playing the game) was maybe a week at most (and that's a generous estimate), and I only used fishing, bug catching and diving for sea creatures to earn bells. If Tom Nook was really greedy, he'd add an interest rate or a deadline to pay him back. But if you don't mind not getting the storage upgrade, you can technically never pay off that last loan at all.
The part about Isabelle drinking comes from western players seeing her with a cup with a brownish liquid in it and thought it was whiskey. Japanese players laughed at the west, because she was drinking barley tea. A common drink in Japan, drank cold, like Western Ice Tea.
People go all over the general idea that Tom Nook is a crook, but as someone who has been playing this game for literally 20 years (that's when the 1st AC game was released) I can tell you he's not a crook. Nobody else would just sit and wait as long as it takes for you to pay off your mortgage and never charge you a late fee on your rent.
so, I do like the song, but Tom is actually a great guy! You don't have to pay him if you don't want to. And he doesn't break down your door asking for the pay. He doesn't force you to do anything, you decided to upgrade your house, you decided to you wanted something and he is just informing you of its cost which he lets you pay when ever you want, no intrest. Sorry, it just bugs me when people call Tom a Crook. He's not even a sneaky Raccoon! He's an adorable and cuddly Tanooki! (I feel like part of why so many people think he's bad is the mix up of what his species is). Again sorry, I don't want to step on toes. But if you think about it he gives you a place to stay and you don’t have a dead line for paying the feas so it’s kinda nice and also if you think about it ton nook had nothing and went back to the city to complete his goal and finally came back and got money and helped you complete the goal so maybe sometimes he’s nice but remember he may still be a crook.

I always assumed bells were equivalent to Yen, not dollars (since, ya know, it's a Japanese made game). 113.76 Yen is equal to 1 US dollar, so if Tom Nook charges you 2,498,000 bells for one of your housing upgrades (which he does, that's they last loan amount), that's equal to $21,958.51 (rounded up), which isn't that bad considering he's retroactively fitting your house with a basement at that point. You also gotta keep in mind how easy it is to earn bells. I payed off the first couple of loans within a day each because I started playing during summer and sharks sell for a ton of bells. But even when the big earning fish are out of season, you can make a fair bit by playing the stalk market, or if you don't wanna gamble on the stalk market, buy a ton of pumpkin plants from Leif and make sure to water them every day (including days you pick the plants) so you turn a huge profit when all those pumpkin plants give you 3 pumpkins, which sell for 350 bells each. I think the longest it took me to pay off a loan (not including time I spent not playing the game) was maybe a week at most (and that's a generous estimate), and I only used fishing, bug catching and diving for sea creatures to earn bells. If Tom Nook was really greedy, he'd add an interest rate or a deadline to pay him back. But if you don't mind not getting the storage upgrade, you can technically never pay off that last loan at all.

The part about Isabelle drinking comes from western players seeing her with a cup with a brownish liquid in it and thought it was whiskey. Japanese players laughed at the west, because she was drinking barley tea. A common drink in Japan, drank cold, like Western Ice Tea.

People go all over the general idea that Tom Nook is a crook, but as someone who has been playing this game for literally 20 years (that's when the 1st AC game was released) I can tell you he's not a crook. Nobody else would just sit and wait as long as it takes for you to pay off your mortgage and never charge you a late fee on your rent.

so, I do like the song, but Tom is actually a great guy! You don't have to pay him if you don't want to. And he doesn't break down your door asking for the pay. He doesn't force you to do anything, you decided to upgrade your house, you decided to you wanted something and he is just informing you of its cost which he lets you pay when ever you want, no intrest.
Sorry, it just bugs me when people call Tom a Crook. He's not even a sneaky Raccoon! He's an adorable and cuddly Tanooki! (I feel like part of why so many people think he's bad is the mix up of what his species is).
