Trial Tube - Honda Montesa 315r Project Bike Review. Or is it?

  • This week we have decided to do something a little bit different and review a bike that has always been a legend in its own right.
The Montesa 315r was a completely incredible machine with pilots like Doug Lampkin, Marc Colomer and of course the mighty FUJIGAS!!!
So we thought after having the incredible dream build on the channel maybe it was time to create something very special next! The only way to find out what that bike is though is to once again get involved.
    Because this....is TRIALTUBE!
Ps for the new merch check out the website - www.trialtube.co.uk

Things I remember about the montesa 315r
the power unbelievable for a 250
    easy to work on
    bullet proof
    rides well
    heavy like really heavy
But a dam good bike which I regret selling, but I found out recently that parts are becoming an issue on them gearbox, cdi ect. The only other issue is with Honda for not making them anymore can you imagine a fuel injected honda 2 stroke trials bike vertigo would be scared lol

    • @TrialTube
      @TrialTube  Před 2 lety +1

I completely agree. They are so far advanced for the age of the machine.
I guess Honda were in it for the long haul. Maybe how they look at it from the 4RT’s perspective 👍

Just bought a 20 year old 315r to get into trials riding. It does feel heavier than others I looked at, and there is so much compression I have to jump on the kick starter.

Fork and shock valving on the 315R's is slow in comparison to almost all modern bikes, best thing you can do is to get them serviced with thinner oil front and rear or have it re-valved. Its why they feel so much heaver than the modern bikes more so than anything else. My 2 cents. Looking forward to the progress on this project...

I'm really looking forward to following this resto. That bike sounds mint mate!
I was lucky enough to pick up a '97 Cota 315r two years back, which I probably overpaid for at the time, but as it was local to me it didn't cost me much in diesel to bring home anyway.
Like your RTL it's been a bit (ab)used -mine had a former life as a farm bike- and needs a good bit doing to it, it actually came complete with a bit of beaten copper tube attached in place of the rubber kick start grip 😀 which makes it interesting to start with wet feet, and probably says a lot about how well used it's been, but it is a runner, at least for now. Figure it'll probably need a full engine rebuild at some point, but I'm kinda looking forward to doing that actually.
Yours definitely sounds and looks better though. Even your tyres are in better nick 🙃😅
Unfortunately I fell ill shortly after buying it so it's still in the shed waiting for parts and attention at the moment, but I really want to refurb it when I'm back earning again, and then use it to (re)learn some trials skills on. It's only been just over 40 years since I last rode the Yam TY80 that I first learnt to ride on as a nipper, so I'm sure it'll all come flooding back 😂
Anyway you've just earned my subscription sir, looking forward to seeing your progress on this project and also checking out your previous content.
