Drew himself in his initial presser stated that he was told and understands that he was brought in as a backup QB and Jones was the starter. Why would you assume that he was lying? Of course, if Lock catches fire or Jones looks really rusty then a possibility is always on the table, but no one in the Giants organization has suggested that they were anticipating a mano a mano QB competition for who would be the starting QB. Until I hear otherwise, I have no reason to disbelieve what Lock stated.
He signed in NY because it more than just a 'be the backup' opportunity. As Joe Schoen likes to say, 'the expectation' is he'll be the backup. But this regime's articulated 'expectations' aren't guaranteed to come true, as we have learned

Obviously everyone in the Giants org is going to say that he is the backup to DJ. The Seattle GM has no reason to lie as he has no stake in the Giants. The Giants front office on the other hand needs to maintain a certain image and not create hostility and if DJ IS replaced it was because he was outplayed and not bc the Giants have no faith in him anymore. It’s more just an effort to make DJ still feel wanted and they don’t want to create bitterness in the locker room.

On the Daniel Jones rehab topic… IMHO his limitations to run effectively in September could be a blessing in disguise. He used to run “prematurely” on occasions. Perhaps that situation enables him to refocus on the reads and throwing the football!? Keep up the great work PL!

I think Jones still has a chance to succeed AND I'm also glad that they signed Lock. There doesn't need to be any controversy about who starts. When Schoen and/or Daboll state that Daniel Jones IS the starting QB it is exactly what they should say(imo). Drew Lock didn't need to be told that he would be competing for the starting job, it's just common sense. Jones just came off a disastrous season where he was beaten mercilessly and lost after six games and he has the task of getting ready physically for August. He may be up to it or he may not. As a competitor, Lock naturally knows that he may have an opportunity to play. From the Giants point of view, Daboll knows that Lock has a similar experience to Jones in that has played both poorly and played well at times and probably looks forward to seeing if he can help Lock improve his game. Naturally the Giants would LOVE to see Jones ready for opening day(after giving him that contract) and ready to take advantage of an improved supporting cast but if for any reason he can't do that, there is a plan B. I don't see a problem there for the coaches, plan A.....or plan B...... GoGiants!!!

Put jones on a decent team behind an offensive line that can actually block and receivers that can get open and actually catch the ball. He would be a top qb hard to throw when u have 300 lbs lineman around your neck
Drew Lock will give Daboll a more clear idea of what the giants offense is capable of compared to Daniel Jones.
Drew lock is one of 11 QB from 2019 draft where only few remains or better.
This is how I see the qb thing. Play whoever is better period. Idc who it is. If it's Jones great, if it's Lock great, if it's Tommy or the undrafted kid great.
Remember Matt Flynn. Seattle paid him a lot of money. However he got beat out by a guy names Russell Wilson. That certainly worked out for them. Just cause you paid a guy money doesn't mean you play him if he's not the best guy. Doubling down on a mistake isn't good business. Take for example Erik flowers. Did he bust as a tackle yes. After year 3 instead of trying to force tackle should we of tried him at guard yes. Would of it helped the team to have an average guard even tho it's not what you envisioned him being, yes. But they double down on their mistake and missed out on a cheap starting guard. Don't double down just play the best guy whoever that is.

DJ must be on a short leash if Shoen was willing to move up for Maye. But Lock has to prove he can cut down the Ints. Lock looked better with Seahawks last year, but he still threw too many ints.

I think the praise of what Lock could be for the Giants is grounded more in people's information and belief that he'll get an actual opportunity in New York (coming off playing some good ball in a quick spurt in Seattle), rather than a belief that he's elite and untapped
@@PLonNFL Makes sense more sense. Just funny, there’s not many elite QBs, so sometimes you have to hope for the 2nd tier guy with grit and gamer ability in the 4th while building around that guy. As giants fans we seem to be complaining about not having an elite guy, but we really haven’t ever had that. It’s always been very solid qbs who are tough and play in big spots (Eli and Simms basically, maybe through hostetler in there too).

I don’t know understand what you’re talking about how the Giants can make any acquisitions when they’re almost -24,000,000 with the cap- they’re gonna have to restructure Thomases contract and possibly Daniel Jones. God help us. If you remember last year, Joe Shoen didn’t control the cap and when the Giants needed to sign DeVito they had to trade Williams to the Seahawks for cap relief. Of course the Giants front office lied and tried to paint it as William was asked if he wanted to go there. Lots of the same bullshit from the Giants, front office and ownership. Giants are not making any big acquisitions. Let’s try to understand how football works.
You always have the ability to structure contracts to push money down the road and reduce current cap hits. It's just a question of where the organization is and what they're willing to do for short-term vs. long

Daniel Jones is the luckiest qb in the NFL- keeping his job 6 yrs with mid play -love how you Giants keep pushing the narrative that he’s a functional nfl qb- really disappointed in you Pat - believing that Jones is an NFL qb- I know you watch film but if you don’t see that Jones can’t process plays and has zero pocket presence I’m sorry for you - He won a playoff game vs a terrible Minn secondary . I think you're misinterpreting my evaluation of his play. I would have been in the QB market this offseason and taken more action than the Giants did. I could see Daniel having success on his next team after this with a better supporting cast, though, too.
