    Let's do the math. Let's say Grimmel is 40 and he started hunting when he was 15. Indeed, that's 25 years of him hunting night furies. But that means Toothless would've been around 5 years old when Grimmel started hunting. So not only did this guy miss killing Toothless through out his youth (after age 5), he likely missed killing Toothless's parents!
    It's conceivable that Grimmel did kill his parents later, but Toothless managed to avoid him and take care of himself in the wild, suggesting that his parents probably taught him everything he needed to know before he reached maturity (assuming age 15). So if Grimmel did kill his parents, it was likely after Toothless had already left the family flock.
    Plus, I don't think Toothless would've trusted Hiccup the way he did if he'd witnessed his parents being killed by Grimmel (as popular fan theories seem to suggest). I'm not saying it's impossible, but the evidence doesn't seem to quite add up.

    • @Alteori
      @Alteori  Před 5 lety +52

      Totally plausible :D I love it! Also, remember though that Toothless did NOT trust Hiccup in the beginning. He didn't trust any human and the reason he didn't kill him is because Hiccup chose not to kill him and then helped him. Toothless realized not all humans are bad. The dragons in HTTYD are VERY intelligent so Toothless would have known the difference between a bad human and a good one

      grimmel is not 40. he's at least 50 and probably 60. however, when he meets toothless he doesn't seem to have hunted night furies in a long time "i've missed this". also, he's from the continent and doesn't appear to have been to the archipelago before the third movie, so it's no surprise that he didn't kill toothless. night furies would naturally be big game animals and apex predators so they would naturally be targeted by hunters, even hundreds of years before grimmel was even born. I also think night furies are pack animals(their high intelligence and complex facial expressions suggest this) and toothless most likely learnt what he did by surviving in the wild growing up. humans are an oddity in placental mammals, because babies are born extremely undeveloped. most grazing animals can stand withing a few hours after birth, and most reptiles hatch as miniature versions of their parents, fully independent and developed from birth. I think its possible that toothless raised himself, although it is unlikely.

    I totally believe that Night Furies are alive and well, but just simply well hidden. Now its been a bit since i last watch the final movie in theaters when it came out so forgive me if i am mistaken but, I believe that when Grimmel was asked about the Night Furies and said that they were extinct, the other person in the conversation asked about a possible location where they can still be. And his response was a very smug "but they NEVER go that far..." i forget if it was north or south. Most likely referring to one of the poles. And he hints that they can't handle the cold weather. However how would he truly know that. Smart animals when pushed further away from there original homes can sometimes adapt and even thrive one the threat is gone. What are your thoughts on this? Please correct me if I am wrong here but I really think they are out there. Possibly where we would least expect to see them!

      I have headcannon about that. I'm not done with it yet, but you can read.
      Once upon a time, in a far away land, there were dragons. We lived freely and peacefully with each other, but a bit too peacefully, one might think. I lived a life that any Dragon would want. I had a sibling called Sweetlitter. She lived with me along with our mom and dad. And we all lived together, but we're protected by one mighty beast, or the king of beasts even. He was... our alpha.
      Most Other Dragons said I was a wee Dragon when I hatched, about half the size of my mom's head. However, what I lacked in size, I made up for in heart.
      I was told that although I couldn't fly yet, I was so full of adventure. I would always go to our alpha, and ask questions about the outside world. I was told "Gripper, you're too young to understand the outside world, you're better off here, where its safer". My sister Littersweet and I said otherwise and she would often follow me on our "adventures" in the cave.
      As a wyrmling, I always wanted to be an alpha, and protect all dragons, including furies from any dangers, but I knew that would never happen. One time, when I could fly, I ventured a little too far from the cave. I saw something I had never seen before. It had the front of a dragon and wings, but its wings were square shaped and also layered on top of each other, as if to catch the wind. It's body was made of perfectly symmetrical trees, and on its back which I flew only a few metres to see, it had some strange creatures with dead grass on their head, no wings or tail, and walked on two legs. This was the start of something that would change my life.
      Predictably, Sweetlitter went and told mom and dad. Let's just say, they were not happy. My mom told the alpha, and he had a certain look on his face, like he knew those creatures.
      "Retreat into all of your dens, we can't let them see us" he said urgently.
      I had just brought us one step closer to finding our terrible fate.
      All but two dragons had taken cover, they were death grippers,who had those strange creatures on them. Turned out they could magically grow scales and wings, or at least make them. A few moments later, I heard terrified screeches. They captured and slaughtered us, and although we could take them, the Alpha had ordered one thing. Fly.
      We all tried to fly away, but got shot. They would tranquilize some dragons, leaving them to fall and drown. Despite attacking every dragon, they seemed to really want Furies. It was every dragon for itself, and I watched everything, and everyone I loved vanished. I was the last nightfury in my nest, and it seemed like I would never see another ever again. As I flew miles, my wings were sore and couldn't take it anymore, I stopped to rest, and out of nowhere, a massive flock of dragons flew above me with food in their mouth. I was hungry and desperate but had just travelled a long journey.
      A deadly nadder came down to me. I didn't know her, but she seemed welcoming enough for me to trust her. She took me on her back and took me to a mountain. It was another dragon nest, however with a not so protective alpha. It was tyrannical, and unlike my alpha, it ate other dragons instead of protecting us. She was a red death.

      Technically the Light Fury also came to trust Hiccup rather quickly as well, and she was actually caught and abused. So...there’s really nothing saying that Toothless hadn’t already encountered Grimmel in the past when he was MUCH younger before getting enthralled by the alpha in Httyd1. (Toothless’s eyes were enthralled-dialated when he randomly flew off to the Nest as he flew in formation with the other dragons. What I don’t quite get is...why the Alpha didn’t just enthrall Toothless and the other newly-partnered dragons again to keep them from attacking him. And also in the hidden world there was 2 other night fury, most likely females so toothless couldve added those to his breedable females. since he is the Alpha of the hidden world.

    While I love the idea of other Night Furies existing, I believe the creators of the movie trilogy confirmed that Toothless is in fact the last of his kind. In an interview discussing the Light Fury, the director states that: "The Light Fury is a variation of Toothless’ species, the Night Fury. She is not the last of her kind, unlike Toothless."
    The line, "She is not the last of her kind, unlike Toothless." Is a clear indicator that the director has confirmed that the Night Fury species apart from Toothless is extinct and will become completely extinct when Toothless passes. Yes, the Night Lights exist, and whilst they will have Night Fury DNA it doesn't make them a complete Night Fury. The pure Night Fury genome will be no more. Let us not forget that others would have followed Grimmels example, probably helping him in wiping out their species. Night Furys may have fled to colder regions but unfortunately evolution takes a very long time so therefore these dragons would not have had a chance to adapt quick enough, some may have been strong enough to possibly survive in colder climates but will also come to a much shorter demise than a Night Fury that lives in its natural ecosystem.
    We are getting a Christmas special, and whilst I would love to see more Night furys I don't think the director is quick to go back on his word, although there is a very very slim chance that maybe he will change his mind and introduce us to more. But I highly doubt that. Having other Night Furys I think would just take some spark away from how important Toothless is.

      night furies might be a tropical species or a species that migrates long long distances very far south to mate. So if they were hunted in the north what if they just decided to stick to more southern/tropical areas instead of heading back north? It would be smarter since they aren't very big dragons they can find more food in tropical areas and they already have many traits that make adapting to such environmental conditions really easy. (ex: echolocation, dark coloring and nocturnal habits, flexible/really agile fliers., etc) All these traits add up to being able to live in forests, mountains sea stacks on the coast, (anywhere in the tropics really).

    Night furies were hunted to near extinction. That's discussed in the movies. There are several light furies though which are clearly seen in the scene when Toothless and his new lady love are front and center among the dragons of the hidden world. The camera pans over them in the audience. It's never actually confirmed, however, that Toothless truly is the ONLY night fury.

    I think that there must be more Night Fury dragons out there (it's just that the director of the HTTYD trilogy just wanted to end the series rather than drag it on. Which, is understandable.) The reason I believe this is because Valka in HTTYD 2, when she was gawking over Toothless after reuniting with Hiccup, offhandedly says that she has "...never seen one *this close.* " this comment implies that Valka must have seen a Night Fury (or even possibly a few Night Furies) in her dragon sanctuary at one point in time prior to the events of the 2nd movie, but either at a distance or because she accidentally scared them off when she tried to approach one. However, what *DOESN'T* make sense about that theory is that Valka knew about the secret 'Night Fury Back Spines' trick. So, if she only saw a Night Fury(ies?) at a distance, how exactly *DID* Valka know about unlocking that secret trick that not even Toothless knew about, assuming that she couldn't get close enough to the nameless wild Night Fury(ies?) that she maybe had spotted in her dragon sanctuary one day sometime in the past?

    • @popsicIes
      @popsicIes Před rokem

      Wasn't it said that night furies -- before they were hunted to near extinction -- would attack Berk? Valka very well could have, uh, witnessed the trick during the raids. I'm not a HTTYD theorist, though, so take it with a grain of salt

  • @sumanthganapathibasavapatn141

    I have another theory that might sound a little crazy, but here it is. Based on the relative ages of Grimmel, Drago, the warlords, or any other trappers interested in Night Furies, people have been hunting and persecuting these dragons for ages. Not many people evidently know of them (seeing as the Dragon Book says literally nothing about them), but people who want to find out will. Everyone is fascinated by Night Furies and want to hunt them down. Hiccup makes note of this in the opening of HTTYD 1, where he says the highest status comes from hunting Night Furies. This means two things- people have hunted them in the past, and there is a very large honor that comes from doing so. Usually, the honor and status thing comes from scarcity of the object in question or the dangers to be endured in order to get it. Why are Night Furies so rare, you ask? Here's my theory. Over time, the total-black Night Furies evolved into Light Furies which have inherent camouflage and a relatively smaller body size. Light Furies can also evidently fly around in daytime due to their coloration not giving them away. Therefore, as more and more Night Furies evolved over time into Light Furies, the latter's number increased while the former became rarer and rarer. Valka says Toothless may be the last of his kind, and we see an active Light Fury mating pair in the Hidden World (since there's a mum and a baby). Night Furies are bigger, bulkier, and less accustomed to camouflage than the Light Furies. This means that the Light Furies have a better survival advantage than their all-black cousins. Natural selection means that anything that gives survival advantage is selected for over time. It's not as though the Night Furies have any disadvantages, which is why their numbers still continued to exist but due to overhunting they almost went extinct. What do you guys think?

    Ok so i have a 3rd possibility:
    grimmel could have killed them all a few years ago. clearly, hiccup is about 20 (i know thats sounds too much but in httyd 2, his mother said about 20 years ago, the attack of the dragons happened and she ran.) the scene where hiccups father said "especially night furies" in hiccups flash backs was about when hiccup was 4 - 5. perhaps the "night furies" that his father was talking about had gotten old and easy to hunt. grimmel took that as an advantage. grimmel had possibly passed the hidden world when he was a boy, but his chief turned. as it was a huge dip. when berk flew away and grimmel was telling the others where they had went, he seemed to know alot about night furies. my other theory is that grimmel was lying about killing his first night fury. how would grimmel know all that about night furies if he killed them on the spot. and he couldnt have read a book as, in the story it explains there was no facts known of night furies.i think grimmel rode dragons and hiccup and him are VERY alike.
    anyway thats my possibility

    • @ruichirou8434
      @ruichirou8434 Před 2 lety +1

      While that's a good theory, I don't think Grimmel would ever ride dragons. See, Grimmel isn't exactly one to lie, or bluff, no he's got too huge of a pride and a love of hunt for that. He probably did kill a Night Fury, but not exactly on the spot. He hesitated, much like Hiccup, before thinking, maybe he could use this as an advantage to know the traits of night furies, and use it so that he can drive them into extinction.

    I agree that Toothless did have a family, but he lost them at a young age. I have this hypothesis because when he and the light fury first mated on the lake, he didn’t know the mating dance. I believe this is because Grimm killed Toothlesses family, so his parents weren’t able to teach him. But there may also be another reason. Since in most litters, there’s always a runt. And parents usually kill off or leave runts to protect the stronger ones. Toothless may have been a runt and his family left him. But he somehow survived and stayed with the nest in the first movie.

While we don't see any night furies, it's reasonable to assume they are there, somewhere. There's so much land still undiscovered by Hiccup that he can no longer explore without the aid of Toothless. In conclusion as of what everyone in the show and the audience knows with the evidence shown and given by the producers and the entire franchise of How To Train Your Dragon, Toothless is the last Night Fury and after he dies the Night Fury species will be forever extinct and until we are given definitive proof that Toothless is not the last Night Fury I will stand by this and will not change my mind no matter what theories arise from anyone in or out of the franchises fandom. After Grimmel started hunting the nightfuries, the hunters had a plan to hunt the nightfuries during the day so it’s easier, then when the nightfuries realized they were being hunted they traveled and adapted to having white scales and the power of disappearing to hide WAY better during the day where they used to be hunted, and they discovered the hidden world and lived in solitude there and every-so-often one of the “lightfuries” leaves the hidden world to seek out other nightfuries or “lightfuries” and take them back to their safe place known as the “hidden world” for dragons! If anyone is wondering why hiccup and astrid were flying right next to fireworms (classified as hotter than the sun) and not burning up, is because fireworms can control their bodyheat. They're only hotter than the sun when they need to be, it is shown when one of the characters in Race to the Edge or something idk was holding a fireworm and yknow, their hand didn't blow up.

    What if light furies *are* just female night furies? You also have to think that toothlesse's mom could have been a light fury, there may have been just a pure black variation. You just have to think about genes. There is always a chance that the offspring will be identical to the parents. Maybe toothless and the light fury just happened to have kids like that. You never know.

    In Riders of Berk in the episode hiccup goes thru Bork(or Borg i can't remember)'s notes it says that night furries don't like other dragons so maybe they have always lived in their own little place alone. maybe Toothless was taken away from his pack by the red death?

    The series focuses on a small part of the Scandinavian region in a time when days or weeks long travel overseas was not common enough for Vikings to realize the immensity of the world. Hence, dragon species seen in the series might cover most of the Scandinavian species but not all European species, and absolutely not the ones endemic to other parts of the world such as the Caribbean, arid deserts, steppes, mountain ranges, tropics, and so on.

    I wonder if perhaps the reason why nightfuries are so rare is because they themselves are a mutation of the lightfury. Sort of like how under certain circumstances animals in nature can be born as either albino or melanistic. So, perhaps, Toothless is a rarity among rarities, a melanistic lightfury.
