Reminder re: divorce rate, that only because people didn't divorce legally doesn't mean they were happy or even together. Just talk to any older person, especially older women. I've met widows who don't miss their husbands at all and are in fact happier now they're gone. A coworker of mine's been together with her partner for +20 years, even has a child with him, all while he was married to someone else -- the wife was aware, they were separated in reality but not legally. So yeah, divorce rates being higher isn't in and of itself a bad thing, not without context.

My grandmother was married until her death, in her 50s... to a man who gambled most of their income away, keeping them in abject poverty, a man who was with another woman 7 days after her burial. Of all my grandparents, only one was unable to hold down a relationship. The others had really good happy marriages... However, I feel like they were the exception. Divorce rate for their generation was low, but there were a lot of relationships where tvwrything was through the man, and women were often held hostage and felt like they didn't have a real choice in their partner for a whole litany of social and financial reasons.
My parents generation was the transition where when they got married a lot of the same social norms forced women into marriage, but as things changed and as women became capable of independence, they took advantage of it.
With my generation, I feel like a lot of people still felt pressure to get married for love, and then when they fell out of love there wasn't much to keep them together, so the divorce rate spiked a bit.
But now... Divorce rates are down. Most don't feel the need to get hitched, so those who do tend to get married with clearer heads and more commitment to each other rather than a commitment to benefits of the marriage, or commitment to the idea of marriage, or commitment to their religion as a primary reason to get married.

The divorce rate going up/being high is a good thing actually. It means people aren't staying in crappy marriages that make them miserable. My parents got divorced and it was probably the best thing that they could have done. Now I have 2 loving bio parents, and 2 loving step parents.

    • @Stefisgarden
      @Stefisgarden Před měsícem +53

I think both can be true at once. The divorce rate spike in the past was a really good sign because it meant that people were more able to leave unhappy or abusive relationships. But at the same time, the divorce rate going down may(emphasis on MAY) be indicative of happier and healthier relationships overall, or indicative of people taking longer to decide if marriage is something they truly want and if they and their partner are compatible long term. It could even be indicative of both. So while I'm not going to jump anywhere near "divorce bad!" territory, I would like to view it was a tentative win until evidence shows a regression into the old ways of unhappy marriages.

It's important to remember that the man who has never felt pain will struggle to cope when he gets a papercut. And that should be expected, he is still in pain, the worst pain of his life. He is no less strong or less important than the person who gets a papercut everyday.
I'm chronically ill, in chronic pain everyday, have been since I was child, but that shouldn't make me unsympathetic to the average pain of others. It's important to feel grateful you're not in pain everyday, but when you are pain it still sucks

Empathy is important to me. Humans are pack animals, and we're built for community. If a friend or family member- hell, a random stranger! - is in pain (whether physical or emotional), I want them to feel better and understand how sucky that is.
And for the former, it's also important for those of us with chronic illness/pain to remember that having a flare is valid, and we shouldn't minimize our own pain due to thinking less of it or something, simply bc we're always in pain. It's still not fun, and it's okay to need help or extra support from people close by.

The impact of laundry machines is often underestimated.
It took away do much work from the house hold, made clothing and fabrics longer useable and thus cheaper.
Not to mention, it increased hygenes and thus health.
And of course, it opened up the once laundry occupied workforce to go to other workplaces and be productive and innovative (yes mostly women).
The laundry machine is among the very top of humanity's most impactfull inventions. Together with things like fire, the wheel, writing, antibiotics, vaccines, printing, steam/electricity/combustion engines, and the internet.

From rope to yarn to thread, string is used in so many places in modern life, and filled so many roles in the past as well that it was surprising I had spent so long not thinking of it at this great invention similar to the wheel. We even use string WITH the wheel to make the pulley, which helps so much in leverage and moving heavier items!

      @@joybailey7254 good point actually.
Rope was especially crucial back before things like proper glue and metal nails were common place.
      Same with string.
Also, fabrics were woven from it.
And the amount of work to make rope back then is effectivly forgotten today.
Personally I wouldnt put it to one of the most impactfull inventions.
Sinue from animals were just left over when you ate it. Plant matter is very string-y by nature. And well... hair in a mammal dominated world is everywhere.
Its in a similar position as the wheel.
I personally dont think the wheel is that impactfull an invention.
More impactfull are machines using wheels, like wind/water mills, gears, steam engines, powered vehicles like trains and cars, etc.
The wheen is not that revolutionary. Personally I think its importance is inflated due to children cartoons and the car industry's advertisement.
      Either way.

Be careful on that poverty number, the World Bank (where that statistic usually comes from) lowered the poverty line for extreme poverty during the 2000s, and then raised it with inflation since, which "raised people out of poverty" by changing the definition of poverty rather than any actual improvement to their living situation.

When I learned about statistics my teacher told me " never trust a statistic you didn't temper with yourself" which sound highly cynical XD
But honestly when you have a set of data yourself and play around with the parameters (such as the limit of what would fall in a category like "extreme poverty") you realize how important it is to have the right background information when seeing a statistic.
Especially with something as prone to change as poverty because it has to be adjusted to time (with inflation and cost of living etc) and you can't simply take the same value for it as you would have taken some years ago.

People lived and died, went to war with the feds, pushed back against a racist supermajority, pushed back against homophobia, etc, for us to enjoy simple things like weekends off and wearing a short skirt regardless of gender. Trivial now, but requiring the back-breaking labors of countless throughout their entire lives.
Get involved in politics, get involved in your community, make connections, organize efforts to make and advocate for changing broken parts of the world. Rome wasn't built in a day, but by a cobblestone at a time.

Then when I made it into my early twenties the average life span was 35 to 37 years, with the majority still dying in the their teens. Once Trikafta was created they called it a miracle drug and even approved it for use early because of how well the medication was working. I went on it at the end of 2019 and the results were significant. It really is a miracle for people like me, who never planned to live into their thirties at all and never even made plans for college because of it. However as recently as the 1950s the average was around 30 deaths per 1000 live births. And the rate for black women's babies in the 1950 & 1960s was about 43 & 44 deaths per 1000 per live births. So even more specific data points like this have improved. As said we need to continue the work as medical bias is not fair & can cause preventable deaths, but it's important that people don't end up feeling like nothing ever gets better & that it's pointless to try.

Hey, I'm writing this as an ad plays on the background. I normally use an ad blocker but I like to turn it off for your videos. I don't even know how to give this comment a funny twist or anything. I just genuinely appreciate you putting out so much positivity. Not just this video. When I first found your channel, I was suicidal after just having realised I'm a gay trans man, being diagnosed with autism and depression, and just having gotten out of a horrible relationship. Long story short, I've gotten better. I can't believe I'm saying that, but I've gotten better and you made me want to get better at the time I needed it the most. It inspires me how compassionate and supportive you are of the gay folk, trans folk, neurodivergent folk, etc. even if you aren't necessarily part of those communities. I quite literally owe allies like you with my life. And these days I strive to put out that same kindness back into the world.
I don't know what to add here at the end. Maybe just that I was a furry before I started watching you, but when my mental health plummeted and I was struggling with my at the time undiagnosed autistic identity, I was desperate to fit in and just be normal and have normal hobbies. Ever since I've gotten better, I've sort of began gravitating back towards the furry community and your videos played a pretty major role in all that, so you could say you made me a furry.
    Thanks, Click. ❤

I'm old (50s) and when I was growing up in the UK we had the Falklands War, IRA blowing up cities near me, Maggie Thatcher and all the things she did - anti LGBT bills, privatisation, destroying the miners, etc. , and threat of nuclear war. My dad grew up with the end of rationing and having to catch rabbits to eat. India was still fighting for independence after their horrendous treatment by Britain, and the start of the cold war. My Grandad fought in the war, my other grandad was an evacuee and my gran was a kid in London, playing in bomb craters. These are the "good old days" that some people want to go back to. So while there are problems today, and progress isn't a straight line, things do get better. It might not feel like it sometimes and there are still battles to be won, I have faith that the younger generations are going to make the world a much better place, given time.

Also, the world is not going to get better in the slightest unless people like you and me get involved in politics and our local communities to drive changes towards a better world. Enjoy holidays and/or weekends? People literally lived, went to war with the federal and state government and contractors, and died so we could enjoy shit like that. We won't ever have it that hard but we have to fight like hell to keep shit like that from happening again and then bestowing privileges on future generations.

While losing my friend at such a young age is still incredibly sad, my mom had to watch parents lose children so much younger to the disease (my mom was a high-risk obstetrics nurse practitioner in the 70's-late 90's). I provide a place to rest for my friends who are burnt out. I teach people to cook. I make local immigrants food akin to what they eat from their homelands. I use my strong body to carry furniture and backpacks and suitcases and whatever else for community members and homeless wanderers all the same. I help average people learn to take care of themselves. I learned first aid and wound care. I don't even have a degree or training in any of it. Something for amercians to keep in mind about midcentury housing: 1. rooms were SMALL your average collage dorm room was about the size of the largest room in the house. 2. when you bought a house unless you were super wealthy you really had two options: a. government funded mass housing projects where the houses were built quick and cheaply and had a lot of problems b. getting a kit house from sears (like, they send by mail truck loads of boxes with everything measured out to build the house and ikea instructions on how to do it) and essentially building it yourself with a few friends, maybe some specialists for plumbing and electricity and then the guy from sears who came and installed your boiler as a complementary bonus for buying a boiler with your house and a government inspection guy to make sure you aren't going to be a danger to yourself and others once everything is done.
your options very much were: shoddy craftsman's ship thats gonna need to be renovated in ten years time or do it yourself. its part why you dont see a lot of 1950s homes lately.

I know I can certainly do that, but with some positive changes getting rolled back, like Texas going back on abortion laws and making it illegal again (not sure if that's still an issue or was a short lived decision) at least there is one positive we can hold onto: we've already tasted that victory. Sure, it might've been snatched back from us be we now know the taste and like sharks with seal blood in the water... Nothing is going to stop that hunt now until it's done and we've got our teeth sunk solidly in that prize, so the positive changes will continue because they must. The floodgate has already been cracked open and there's only a matter of time until it breaks under the pressure of a whole generation demanding change. In percentages, it feels like less people starve to death, but more people struggle to get out of poverty. I don't mean actual poverty, more like how it's seems like in America that far too many have to work themselves to death for a liveable wage, meaning parents spend too little time with their children and stuff like that. Don't know how true this is on a global scale, and it's not like I've spent hours going over the topic, but it certainly feels that way.

28:37 about the divorse rates. Rachel Oates always points out that it's presented as a bad thing, but no one says why it's bad. Like, now women have a choice and a possibility to divorse, without stigma or starvation, as they are not completely depending on men. Anyone in an unhappy relationship can get out and move on and maybe remain friends and effective co-parents. Where is that bad?

    • @insertianameia2224
      @insertianameia2224 Před měsícem +16

Divorce rates are lower. They're only still high in what's called "Grey divorce" or divorce of the elderly. It's mostly gen xers, with a chunk of boomers, that are divorcing at heavy rates. Millenials amd gen Zers have more independent stability which means they can more easily prioritize finding and staying with partners that they have healthy, and at least fairly stable, relationships with. They cam choose someome because they WANT to be with them not becauae they feel they have to be with them. Which leads to better rates.
Grey divorces tend to lead both sides off financially worse, from what I have found, is that regardless of whether she was a traditional stay at home or the bread winner, the wives tend to come out having and keeping better overall happiness (take this one with a grain of salt. Someone else might find more hutni could only find a couple things on this specifically and they weren't firsthand sources.)
Now women DO initiate divorce more, but again, as you stated, it's often due to the fact that they aren't forced to stay with abusive, toxic, man-babies that don't want to do anything around the house, with the kids, or show affection/appreciation. They can get a job, even if it isn't much, on their own and live on their own much better and more easily. They aren't dependent on legally and socially having to have a man around. Amd single women, divorced or never married, are consistently the happiest adult demographic with single women, divorced or never married, with kids coming in at second. They also live much longer. Meanwhile single men, either divorced or never married are the most miserable and unhappy.

I actually get laughed at by men because I encourage them to love themsleves and be happy single, then try and look for a relationship (if they want one.) It always winds up with then saying I'm single because no guy wants me, even though over the yrs I've had a couple guys want to be in a serious relationship but I chose not to, because at the time, I just didn't have the time or energy for a relationship. I got two kids and life is rough. And it always winds yo the same. You try to help them and you get personally attacked. They also refuse to believe that women are happy being single. When it's generally the opposite.
I wish more men were like you and were happy being single. Too much pressure is put on all genders to base their entire self worth on their relationship status. Spinster is a term that applies to unmarried women at 21. 21 is when society has deemed women old and used up. Meanwhile if men aren't sleeping with anything and everything, they're worthless. If they aren't dating a girl that's between 12 and 19, they're dating something worthless, thus they're just a beta cuck.

So my mother grew up in a 90m² apartment, 4 rooms + kitchen + bathroom. 4 boys in one room, 4 girls in the other, 1 bedroom for my grandparents, a living room. There was a cellar (about 12m² for their apartment), and a washing room in the cellar (with a giant washtub, because nobody could afford the first washing machines). I grew up in that same apartment, with my grandparents, youngest aunt and my mother. It was great! A garden around the house, we were practically outside all summer, our own veggie patch was there as well - I loved it, and when everybody came to visit, we still felt like there was enough room (everybody meaning all my aunts and uncles with their spouses and own kids). So yes, I can imagine living on 90m2 with 10 people, it is very much possible!

I live in an area with some rent stabilization laws, and they still allow rents to increase 10% a year on older buildings. (New buildings can raise rents freely). Who can afford annual rent increases potentially well over $100/month? I could make peace with never having my own house but the alternative needs to be affordable.

I can't express how much relief this gives me. The really hyped up stuff and internet makes me feel full on existential dread from how easy it is to find people who think we're doomed. When really, it's just the extremes. Mindfulness and radical acceptance have been tools I learned in therapy that are very helpful sometimes. And I say that as someone who only less than a year ago was _convinced_ I was never gonna heal. And I still worry sometimes, but I try to remember to keep my world small. To focus on right now, and not the future or past.
There's a lot more kindness and positivity in the world when you start focusing on it. Focusing on the darkest things & living in fear are only gonna make things feel worse. It makes it harder to be rational/ see the realistic view. And once you improve on that, then you won't have so many internal "false alarms" and become more able to handle difficult situations when they do arise. I partly say this in order to help train my mind to revert to positive thoughts more :)

On the "I'm 19 and live in Blahblah Dakota" post, the kid also needs to learn that different States have different rates. This is something even people who live in this country don't understand in regards to the separation of federal and state government.
So judging that he splits rent 50/50 with his roommate, that would mean the rent for a standard 2 bed room apartment is $1000. His area also has good public transport that goes everywhere he needs and based on what he said his pay is, a higher State minimum then the federal issued minimum.
In the State I live in what he described is literally an impossiblity. The minimum wage is the Federal $7.25, that job he has would never pay $19/h, a tiny and rundown 2 bedroom apartment costs $1400 on average, $1800 for a nicer one or that allows pets and $2100 if you live in a city, which a city is where you're going to have to live because no where else has public transit. This isn't even touching how States control what taxes apply and what they're set at, State wide health insurance rates, etc.
Its always bothered me how people will sit there and act like every place in the USA is the same and its only the BIG cities like NYC that are way more expensive to live in.

SSI covers my rent but not a ton more and I keep a couple cats and some fish I gotta feed to because they're cheaper then of I had to pay outta pocket for anxiety and antidepressant meds. No clue how the local minimum wage is here though, I'm 25 and gave up trying to get a job around 22 because I couldn't get one fresh outta highschool on account of my comprehension issues making instructions worse then the advanced math class I failed

But the main reason its frustrating, is because we were raised in the time house ownership peaked.
Thus our parenrs expect us to buy a house, like they did. And we expect to be able to work towards buying one.
    But we cant.
So not only are we disapointed, but we're also scolded by the generation before us, which was the generation at the peak of house ownership percentage.

Where you could afford to OWN a home, with kids, and a car, on one working family member, my household gets income from one worker and one person on disability. We're struggling to make ends meet, keep bills paid, pay rent. And we're doing better than a lot of people because we can actually build up savings, and we keep dipping into them. Things are fucking rough financially.
Like, yeah, a lot of things have absolutely gotten better. I in no way want to turn back the clock, I'm trans. As bad as things are now from politicians, I have more support today than I would when the economy was better, if things go full fascism against me I'll have a lot of people who will keep me safe. But I talk to plenty of older folks who can tell me in great detail how much harder it is on my generation economically, how fucked I am and how unfair it is that this is the situation I'm in. In fact $19/hr is considered the minimum “livable wage” in Connecticut, which has the 10th highest cost of living in the US. So I don’t think OP’s making as strong a case as they think. Realistically, we should acknowledge that some states are doing quite well and admit that life everywhere doesn't suck for everyone. But we should also acknowledge that there are still states where the legal minimum wage is below $10/hour, and places where housing costs are spiking into five digits for something as small as a two-bedroom micro-apartment.
It's easy to say that everything is garbage or that everything is great, but optimism can only take you so far. Realism is still required to understand statistics and prevent a graph from showing something excessively positive that's used to devalue people's struggles. To deny that people are struggling in the moment because the modern day is vastly better than it once was is arguably just as harmful to public perception as extreme pessimism, as it can lead to stagnation on efforts to improve these issues. We actually see this in several of the graphs, where our most recent peak is incredibly high, but where we *are* in a sudden downturn as of the last 5-ish years, which is still something we should avoid if we can.

As a student of psychology, I noticed there is some important context is missing in the whole optimist/pessimist discussion. Firstly, optimism and pessimism aren't opposites from the perspective of psychology (nor are they directly related to neuroticism, or negative emotionality). The constructs have a lot more to do with comparative evaluations than absolute evaluations. For instance, a "brooding intellectual" who thinks things are bad BUT that things are improving is an optimist. A person who thinks they're well off BUT they're doing better than most people is an optimist (they have an optimistic outlook on their own circumstances combined with a pessimistic outlook on others' circumstances). This is important to keep in mind when considering the studies. Also important to keep in mind is that most of the relationship between optimism and positive biopsychosocial health outcomes is moderated by coping; it is true that positive outlook, high self-esteem, and high perceived control (of which some, all, or other items may be included under "dispositional optimism") are related on the whole to better outcomes. This is likely because the kinds of stressors commonly experienced by most people most frequently are the ones for which those traits lead to adaptive coping behaviors, but that is not to say that pessimism (which may not exclude high levels of any of those things) cannot lead to adaptive coping behaviors in other circumstances or lead to maladaptive coping behaviors in those circumstances. It's nuanced (just like those extreme poverty figures, as many other commenters have pointed out)!

@@aNoisyPlatypus Well from my own personal experience with past Trauma, I can tell you it absolutely effects how I think of human beings as a whole.
The most untrustworthy, despicable, and worst living species on this planet.
Only the tiniest miniscule of the human population seem to have a tiny bit of good in them.
Which is an improvement on how I used to perceive humans as generally.

That 1990 spike in crime statistics is thought to be a result of leaded fuels literally poisoning everyone breathing in the exhaust. Especially children's brains can be extremely susceptible to the results. Switching to unleaded and the slow lowering of lead content in the air correlated pretty well with crime statistics later when babies growing up breathing less lead became old enough to be able to do some of that law-breaking stuff.

This. Ready access to contraception and pregnancy termination also has a big impact on crime rates about 15 years after any significant change in that access. It turns out that people who don't think they're in a good place to be raising a child actually know what they're doing, and children whose mothers would have used contraception or aborted the pregnancy if they could, are statistically more likely to experience childhood disadvantage, poorer educational outcomes, and teenage criminality.

crime statistics in general are just worthless to look at because there are SO many factors that can contribute to an increased crime rate, the government websites that give you the data literally say this and warn you to not use it to make decisions about anything. you have to really delve into the specific locations and types of crimes, and think about what else is going on at the time? most are petty commercial property crimes or theft, and violent crimes are often family disputes. usually intersections of poverty, education, race, political climate are huge factors, but there are so many other things too like this lead poisoning!

I would love to be that 19yo North Dakota kid. Living outside of a major city (an hour away) rent is $1,700 for a one bedroom, not including utilities and trash. There is no public transportation, not even side walks. The average job pays $10 minimum, but majority of them only offer part time, no full time. Pay almost $500 in insurance (health) for myself, husband, son and dog every two weeks. Gas is $6 a gallon. Groceries for two weeks cost us about $300, that’s just for meat, fruits/veggies, starches, etc. not even anything fun. Child care averages about $850 a week. Husband and I both work full time, go to school full time, save as much as we can, don’t go out, nothing and we stillll can barely afford to just exist. 😭

I hope y'all stay safe and your situation has/does improve soon, everyone deserves a roof over their head and it's sad it's still almost unachievable in any areas of the world because, sure, that statistic might be overally better these days, but anything is better then rock bottom so I still think the numbers aren't great ir quite enough to celebrate yet. Some of this I must disagree with. From 2019 to 2021 I was homeless in the US. I tried to get a cheap one bedroom apartment in slum areas and the minimum rent for this was $800 to $1,000 per month no bills included. A few short years before that such an apartment was going for $400 to $600 a month. This doesn't include the fact that they want you to be earning 2 to 5 times that amount as provable income. So to get into the cheapest slum apartment we would have to make $1,600 to $3,000 per month. At a minimum wage job that would be impossible for any worker. Conversely in the past I was able to work for minimum wage at 40 hours a week and afford a two bedroom apartment plus utilities and food. What I'm trying to point out is the stats don't take in account for the homeless, because no one is polling them. You are not going to see someone asking a homeless/low income person about the state of the housing market. They are going to talk to people who one have time to discuss these topics and two are in a more developed and less crime ridden area.

    • @tealkerberus748
      @tealkerberus748 Před měsícem +8

You're completely correct. The statistics about "the economy" measure the total amount of money moving around in a country. They don't measure how much of that is in the pockets of the rich vs the pockets of the poor. What we've seen in recent decades is a sharp transfer of wealth from the lowest 70% to the top 1%, and the poorer you were to start, the more badly affected you're likely to be. "The economy" these days measures the wealth of the big corporations and the billionaires, not the wellbeing of the ordinary people.
What we really need are studies of the wellbeing of the poorest 10% to get a genuine measure of economic progress. If the bottom 10% have secure housing, sufficient good-quality food, adequate clothing, footwear, health care, education, clean air and water, and all the other necessities, then it's a pretty safe assumption that everyone else in that country is doing fine too. You can't make any such assumption from seeing the rich get richer!
I hope you're able to get into a better situation. These necessities are human rights - you don't have to be deserving or work hard or anything else to have a right to them, they are your rights simply because you're a human being.

The issue with the statistics that say Americans spend a lower percentage on groceries is that we spend more on housing and healthcare, which have skyrocketed over the decades. I'm sure that 19 y/o redditor got torn apart for this, but there is so much wrong with them using their highly circumstancial experience of living with a roommate in a low cost area to extrapolate that the cost of living is not worse for most Americans. As you mentioned, wages have not kept up with inflation, and it's even worse when you compare wages to housing and healthcare.
This is similarly an issue with the studies that claim global poverty has greatly dropped over the years. The issue is how they measure poverty vs. cost of living. Studies on "extreme poverty" often use the metric of people living on "less than $1 a day" which completely negates the rising cost of living. Also, if you remove China from those studies, you will find that global poverty has gone up. China skews it for the rest of the world, mostly because their population is so large, and they had such bad poverty rates in the 20th century. I recommend looking into economist Richard Wolff's work on the true rates of global poverty.

What's tricky about inflation statistics is they don't account for the increase in people's expected standard of living. Technically, it probably is as affordable to live a 1950s lifestyle now as it was in the 1950s, but we want something better than that in 2024.
The average employee works fewer hours per week, which decreases income even though wages have kept up with inflation. More people live alone, which costs more per person than living with a partner. Homeowners have been buying bigger houses, so even though housing costs per sq. ft. have been consistent with overall inflation, housing is overall more expensive.
To be clear, we absolutely should expect a better standard of living as technology improves, and we should have a society that allows people to obtain that better standard of living rather than funneling all the extra wealth to billionaires. I also want to acknowledge that for like half of Americans, it is legitimately hard to afford stuff, because of how unequal our system is. I just think it's important to keep in mind that inflation doesn't tell the whole story.
