    There is something about your videos that makes me fall in love with books. A year ago, I was just a movie fan of Tolkien's adaptations but now I am more aware of his works and I remember it was one of your videos (LotR Alan Lee illustrated) that got me into reading. Thank you for making such videos and I hope you continue to do so. 🙏

      So glad you have realized that reading the trilogy is a very different experience from the movies. The movies were as good as it gets, but the books are... well, superlatives fail.

    I'm getting the standard edition for Christmas. I already have an old cheap paperback edition which I find absolutely invaluable, but nothing beats the experience of using a good quality hardback. The deluxe editions do look fantastic admittedly, but I've already started down the route of the standard editions.

    I absorbed this as a teenager in the early eighties. Note that it covers the Hobbit, LotR and Silmarillion primarily, with other works published up to 1978 only. Unfinished Tales onwards is therefore not covered and you'd do better with one of the online repositories if you need that.

    That is magnificent. I've got one ... a guide ,I mean, from a very long time ago.. "A Tolkien Bestiary" by David Day. Copyright 1979! I love the art of the book. When I first read the books, I needed to feed my imagination with other people's artwork. Some things I could not imagine.. I needed pictures.
    I need a librarian to help me organize the mass of books I've collected over my lifetime. That book is glorious.

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  Před rokem +2

      This is different from Hammond & Scull’s books, in that it’s not academic in nature. Its main purpose is to compile all the names and words referring to any aspect of Tolkien’s works in an encyclopedic format. Hammond & Scull’s take a more of an analytical approach and the scope of their books is different from Foster’s 🙂

    All these deluxe editions from this series have one problem. Illustrations should be printed on glossy paper to really stand out. Printed on same matte paper as text really don`t do them justice. Especially for the price as you can get standard edition for 3x less and it is totally the same paper. Also Foster is working on the update at the moment so there is really no reason to buy this if you have any previous edition.

    Hello! Is there a difference between Unfinished Tales deluxe from Harper Colins and Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth Deluxe apart from the fact that the last is illustrated by Allan Lee ? Thank you

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  Před rokem +1

      Hi there! Technically yes. Unfinished Tales contains several fragments of stories and essays from the First, Second and Third Ages. Whilst The Fall of Numenor replicates only the second portion of Unfinished Tales (besides other material from the LOTR appendices). So in essence, any Tolkien reader who wants to have at his or her disposal all the information, would be better off with both books 🙂

    This deluxe edition is gorgeous, however is the context of this book assembled from other Tolkien books, where they usually have this information at the end or is this something from Robert Foster exclusively?

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  Před rokem +3

      It’s Robert Foster’s own writing. The Silmarillion does have a short index at the end of the book but it’s not elaborate as this book. This book’s sole intent is to provide as much detail on each entry as possible, something which Tolkien books cannot possibly do given the nature of said books. Which makes this work quite a feat in its own right methinks 🙂

      I've got a boxed The Hobbit. It's cover is green, gold and red. You might want to look for it. I've got ancient hard cover copies of the Lord of the Rings that are boxed, but not so fancy. I've always had an impossible time getting all three books in the box. My husband bought them for me for one of my first birthdays (maybe my first birthday? So circa 1975 -77 ) as his wife.. We both loved Lord of the Rings from before we met! There is a very fancy edition of the Lord of the Rings in red cover, all three books together. I never bought it because I didn't know how i would read such a huge book (every time I've bought a 'collected works' edition of anyone, I've regretted it.
