I ordered an older Chevy pickup print. I am persistent if anything I keep moving from making furniture to making stainless core wood rings to wooden Indian baskets to segmented bowls now I am loving what I see with Toy and Joy and your videos.

Years ago David, this channel was a designate scrolling channel with nothing but scrolling but I was really limiting myself and my viewers, so I changed it up to include a little of everything. I'm glad to hear that you enjoy this type of show and I hope that you will enjoy the series.

Perfect timing Kenny! I ordered the plans a week ago and was wondering how to approach my first model build, and now I find this great tutorial for the build. Invaluable guide, many thanks! Could you provide a link to (or brand/model details) of the calculator you mentioned? I constantly need to switch between metric and imperial measurements. Cheers, John (Australia)
I would love to provide a link for my calculator John but I believe it has been discontinued. It is a simple woodworkers calculator and I'm sure that if you google that, you will be able to find one for your use. Good luck on your build and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Being one one those that asked for this type of build video, I really appreciate the tips along the way. When you find a discrepancy do you bring it to the attention of the plan maker? Might avoid a problem for a future first time builder. Look forward to the next episode. You might want to set up links to where people can buy some of the specialty tools make a couple dollars from the retailers, seems all the rage amongst CZcams makers. ;-) Lumberjocks rule!!
Well I hope that you enjoy the series Pat. It's an 8 part one all in all. As for me making money from the retailers, I really have no interest in making money from my hobby and while most other youtube channels seem to monetize and subject their viewers to all kinds of advertisement in the name of making a dollar, I don't. I produce this channel because I like to help people and I love what I do. I don't make a dime from this channel and all the cost for it comes directly out of my pocket and that's the way I like it. The day that I don't enjoy it anymore is that day that I move on and do something else but for now, I'm still loving it and I still don't make a dime from it. I got so hung up on not making money on the show, that I didn't answer your question. It depends on the amount of discrepancies. If there are blatant mistakes as there was in the roll top desk plans, then I will contact the manufacturer and bring them to their attention but I have never contact toys n joys over these because although they can be frustrating, there is almost always a way to find the dimension because of the plans being full sized. I just don't think that they would change it over one guys complaint. That's a lot of expense to go through, especially when people are still buying the plans.
I to make toys&joys and I am hook on your shows,I wondering if you thought about building half track truck. Just keep up the great work 👍

I know this video is super old but do you think I could build a model of this complexity or even harder with a pre-cut wood like popsicle sticks or coffee stirring sticks? I bought two thousand popsicle sticks for a project a while ago and I have more than half of them left. So do you think I could use them to build a truck like this or are these plans meant for someone who has a lot of wood at their disposal?
I think that you have a very interesting idea. After all, what are stir sticks, but larger pieces of wood that are cut into smaller pieces. So I don't see any reason why you couldn't glue pieces together to get the thicknesses and sizes that you want and cut your pieces from there. It would definitely be challenging and the final look of the model would be interesting to say the least. Heck, I'm tempted to try it myself and source some large stir sticks. I say, go for it. What brand of brad point bits do you use that come in such small sizes?
It's not a matter of the brand Barbara. It's a matter of the supplier. I find that Lee Valley pretty much has every size imaginable for brad point bits and they are available in sets or in singles. Your choice.

This issue was already addressed in an earlier comment Thomas, but I will say to you, the same thing that I said to the viewer that mentioned it earlier.....while the 60 degree angle was mentioned on the 2nd page of the plans, it was not mentioned on the piece that we were cutting. With folks that have the experience to know how these plans work and know how to reference other sections of the drawing, it would be a simple thing to look around and discover the measurements elsewhere. However, I feel that for pieces that are completely separate from each other, each individual piece should be fully dimensioned and this includes the angles needed to complete the construction of each and every piece. Leaving out angles on some pieces, while providing them for others can be a confusing thing for some, especially if they are new to model building or print reading. Thanks for tuning in. @@acutabove_woodworkings Will be watching this build video soon; my theory is that if the plan maker ( manufacturer, etc ) really wanted repeat business from newbies, they really need to hit the details...It baffles me that this simple business concept is missed by so many companies. One exception to this is perhaps advanced patterns, but they need to create products that a new person to the hobby can be successful or why would that person want to order something else; just how many companies can survive without getting new customers to reorder ( plans, kits, etc : this is a common problem in scale model wood boats as well and some manufacturers at least try to let the customers know which are considered beginner level vs advanced level). I agree with both of your points, ie, put all the measurements where truly applicable and that these are plans and not instructions - I've been frustrated with no instructions on plans at times, so manufacturers should provide more detail on their beginner kits to ensure success.
@@OlderThanFire Providing "instructions" for woodworking plans is a difficult thing to do Jeff as for every process, there are dozens of ways to achieve that process. This is mostly caused by the different tools in different shops and the different ways that woodworkers approach their problem solving. As long as the plans sell, and no one reports the issues, these companies won't bother to fix the plan issues. It's a good thing that videos like mine are out there to help those who need it. I hope you enjoy the series and that you have a successful model build.
@@acutabove_woodworkings What you say is true, but to me it is more of a mindset of a business, even if not always completely practical to do so ! I just finished the TnJ 1933 Seagram Firetruck (plan 59) and will work on the 1929 truck you recently did and look at how you accomplished some of those task whilst thunking about it for a way I can do the same. Likely I haven't said thank you for ALL of these videos you've produced, let alone taking the actual time to respond.

The show came into being because of a want to help people with woodworking and it's pretty hard to do that unless you produce videos and interact with your audience. I've had these plans sitting in a bag, unused, having been a bit intimidated by the parts involved. Your videos will go a long way to demystifying the build process. Thanks! Quick question: What did you use to round the edges of the axles? I'm assuming a router? But any memory of what size?
I'm going by memory here Matthew but I'm pretty sure that the axles were rounded over with a 1/4" round-over bit on the router table. I only really use two sizes in these model builds. 1/8" and 1/4" so the 1/4" would be more fitting to this part of the model. I hope this helps. The 60° was on the plan on page 1
Thanks for the input Michael, it's appreciated. Page one of the plans shows no dimensions at all and is nothing more than a parts list, general instruction page and drawings of the finished products. Page two, however is where the measurements start. I'm not being a smart ass, I'm just clarifying for others who might be reading this so that they can reference the correct prints, which would be page 2 of 9. The 60 degree angle that I am referring to being missing, is the angle on the frame pieces, not the angle on the rear chassis spacer which does show the angle. And while we know that these pieces go together and share the same angle, there are those who might not know that and might not put that information together so I it was more of a lesson of referencing other parts of the drawing to get missing dimensions. For pieces that are completely different, each piece (in my opinion) should be properly dimensioned. Working on assumptions is a dangerous thing when working with plans and for my liking, I would have liked to see each piece with it's own measurements and angles for those who are not as fluent in reading plans as you and I are. Wow! What basic mistakes been made by the plans. Actually, not the first time I have noticed these basic mistakes as I have plans for a Stagecoach which leaves you up in the air to what the whole build is about. It's like they give you a set of plans and don't really give you any ideas how to go about a certain part being built. So I have no clues to how to make the build but using my imagination.
I don't think I have ever had a set of plans where I didn't find mistakes Gary. One has to remember though that they are plans, not instructions. I quite enjoy trying to figure out the best method of making the pieces. It can be a challenge at times but it's one that I like. Thanks for tuning in to the show. I truly appreciate it.
Why do you not email them with all there mistakes. So that other people can build with no problems
While this company is quite responsive to customer complaints and concerns, they are not about to reprint and entire run of a pattern because one or two woodworkers point out some flaws or missing measurements, especially when he measurements are able to be obtained by scaling from the full size drawings that they provide. It can be a challenge with these plans but a little persistence and some thought will get your through them just fine. I kind of like the challenge as well sometimes, even though it frustrates me. The thought of reprinting never crossed my mind, but to pay 11$ or so for a pattern that you have to basically work out for yourself is a bit of a joke. I am not a wealthy person by any means but on a few occasions watching your video, you have came back and said if you head froward to such a page and do this this way you will save a lot of trouble. The problem with this is for people on my earnings every piece of wood that I purchase has to be hard earned . So for example the bit on where you say that the drive shaft that goes under the carriage do not glue up the mounts as you will not get the drive shaft in. This is ok but the problem comes to whenever for example I go to buy another plan. And now having the same insight that you have with plans, what am I supposed to do email you them and ask you to do another video on them. otherwise I will be putting a lot of time and money into something that needs a degree to work out. A more simple solution of putting a guide to what parts need put together first would have been more of game changer .
I see your point Paul. A good idea with any project, whether it be small like a model build, or large like a desk, is to perform dry fits of all your parts before you ever apply any adhesive to the parts. If you are unsure about the measurements, always check and double check and be sure that you are completely aware of where the parts have to fit and what other parts are required to fit around them. A little forward thinking will always go a long way to helping you figure out these plans. Now don't kid yourself, these plans are not necessarily for new woodworkers, but with a little foresight and some careful checking, I fully believe that any level of woodworker could complete these model builds to a quality that they would be proud of. Don't let one or two missing measurements deter you from trying something that you want to try. The process for all of these models is pretty much the same and there are plenty of online resources (myself included) that would be more than happy to help out if you got stuck with not knowing what to do with a model. Start simple and work your way up Paul and I think that you will surprise yourself.
Well no matter what keep up the great work Kenny. Your video's without doubt have to be in the top ten of describing the project in such detail it is amazing , thanks for your time. And maybe someday you will do another great model of a truck or Car. Keep up the amazing work.
