Been binging ZP episodes all week, and it's extremely impressive how Yahtzee has kept the superb quaility of the writing and delivery consistently on a weekely show for over a decade straight.
You can watch any old episode and then his most recent and it'll be just as entertaining and clever as ever, while having well formed critiques (even if overly nit picky)
The only quaility changes are the mic quaility, the episodes being in 720p even though the style never suffered from 240p anyways (especially if you're watching on your phone), and the intro music
@@SunlitSonata14272 That's to be expected as the industry has changed drastically since he started. But Yahtzee's general opinions haven't change as much as what he's commenting on has changed.
If lootboxes were a thing back in '07 I'm sure he'd have hated them as much then
@@SunlitSonata14272 Yah it's pretty fascinating. Just rewatched the oroginal one and it's hilarious how he praises it for being something different and unique.
I do miss the end credits puns, though...
even if overly nitpicky? which game of yours did he dump shade on?
@@bigmeknurgle Just his style in general, I have no problem with it, in fact I appreciate it. Half the time I know I'll enjoy a game due to what he dislikes about it
Wow, I can't believe the developers of Outward made an intro based on my life!
Literally me
A game where you could explore the world in a moving house that would go raar, that actually sounds amazing!
Baba Yaga: The Game
Mortal Engines: The Movie Tie-In Game?
Howl’s Moving Castle: the movie: the game
@@Ajehy this is what came to mind lol
New game idea, you have a pet mimic that's really small and can only mimic ringboxes and bottles and need to feed it until it can mimic houses and scyscrapers
Admittedly, Outward is not for everyone, but if that sort of experience appeals to you, it's worth the ride.
Also, it has split screen and online coop for PC(!) out of the box. That sold it for me.
40 bucks, made by 10 people. Worth it, if only to see what they will do next.
A game by Deep Silver, unless an Epic Games casul user, is never worth it (from the betrayers of Metro: Exodus).
There are a plethora of previous generation games you'll never have the time to play that surely has more to offer than Awkward.
(EG: Vagrant Story for PSX)
When I found out the game had split screen I couldn't believe it. The most genius thing I've seen in years
@@Changetheling its a damn good game tho
I fully expect next week's upload to feature a Notre dame joke every few minutes
@@SunlitSonata14272 Ok then next upload on the escapist website perhaps
Yahtzee makes his videos a few weeks in advance.
Or a Sri Lanka bombing joke :P
@@crimsonstrykr
Yeah religious people dying is absolutely hilarious.
*Outward* sounds like a more aggressive Animal Crossing
Yeah, I can see it
@@sanctumsomega Yes
You know... I played through outward... And thats not that far off...
I actually want a Pokemon game to cold open in a world where everyone is pissed off at you. It would make the reasons for battles more personal than just ritualistic chicken brawling m
Two years later Legends: Arceus releases, where you start the game and the townspeople tell you to be useful or else they will explicitly leave you to die.
I mean it's not the same, but it's way fucking closer than anyone expected.
That Piers Morgan joke literally had me on the floor.
@@darthkek1953 This is the best thread on CZcams. QED.
@Et Leva He's the left-wing version of Bill O'Reilly
@Et Leva sounds like solid reasoning to me. Call in the firing squad.
@@Ishpeck If you think piers is left wing, there's something seriously wrong with your political analysis.
He's just a dickhead and a bully, who says too little of substance to place him in either direction.
Unless you got a decent quote/party membership to back up your assertion?
Darran Kern exactly. You literally can’t back up your claim because it’s completely false. The dude is just a jackass. He’s apolitical but most educated folks (if you HAD to pick) would most certainly lump him on the right.
I played Outward with my girlfriend locally and a pretty good story came out of it. (As this was the first time both of us played Outward.)
We grab some things from the starting town and decide to go outside to find the money to pay off the debt. We go like 50 steps out of the gate, I notice this large bird thing stalking me. I'm protective, I draw my weapon and wait for it, it just runs whenever I approach it but closes in whenever I move away. I'm skeptical so I keep a close watch on it for like 5 minutes. Then we find a wolf and decide to go fight that. I fight the wolf only for 1 more to come into play. But that's fine. 2 v 2, we're faring nicely, then I get hit by an arrow or something. I look over and 2 bandits dropped by attacking us while we're fighting the wolves. This clusterfuck grows ever less manageable every second. So I rush over to dispose of the ranged enemies since that's just free hits if we don't deal with them. The wolves follow along and just as we get most of the enemies down to pretty low health, kinda getting a grip on the situation, that fucking bird attacks me from the back. Quite a bit of fighting later. I'm outright a dead man walking while my girlfriend isn't doing too well either but she's at maybe 1/3 health. Then we had an option to continue the adventure, or accept that we went 50 feet out of the safe town, got our asses handed to us so we immediately ran back home. We used up all of our healing items, which didn't fully heal us but we continued the adventure carefully along a path which lead us to a cave where we were fighting mushroom people. We managed to tactically clear the dungeon and had a great time because we geared up a bit from the mushroom folk.
This, this right here is what makes Outward so special and playing with a friend/partner is clearly the way it was meant to be played in my opinion. I do wish they implemented more co op features like sharing all progression, but still amazing.
Outward really shines because of it's co-op. And on top of the written story it has really goods ingredients for dynamic stories to form. Such as getting knocked out in the wrong place and waking up imprisoned somewhere and having to find a way out. I'm suprised Yahtzee considered that as a negative.
"... and travelling by night is as advisable as bobbing for Hairdryers" Best comment in ages... TY Yahtzee
just go ahead and bloody marry Obra Dinn
He would if he could
He'd have to get divorced from Saints Row 2 first.
Though the polygamy route works too, I suppose.
@@Tunaria there's also psychonauts and portal 1
Oh! Oh! and Silent hill 2
Dont forget dark souls!
I wish more comedy was so tightly written. There are very few wasted sentences and frankly I quite appreciate that.
Joshua Zane the fact that it’s actually one huge run on sentence means nothing is wasted which is awesome
"Anime dubs" and "softcore porn." I gotta tell you, as an anime fan, there's definitely some overlap.
"Bobbing for hair dryers" is the line that set me off, and I have no idea why.
Hell ya! This was my favorite zero Punctuation in years! I don't know how to put it into word, but it's just got all the right jokes and at the right time like I remember seeing practically every episode, a few years back.
GJ Yahtzee! Whatever you're doing, keep doing it, this video was great!
Just finished your book, bloody loved it - you've really hit your stride. Thank you
Tried outward, finished it 3 times. Fucking wonderful game if you can deal with the tedium
"...and then becomes little more than a very atmospheric Corpse Party".
GUYS, it's time to unite and force Yatzee to review Corpse Party!!!!
This guy is incredibly entertaining. I must have seen all his ZPs more than once by now lol
I really need a ZP episode for Chrono Trigger. The few times Yahtzee's mentioned it have been more neutral than anything so I think it would be a very interesting episode to see what exactly he finds are the positives and negatives of the flawless masterp- I mean, the game.
I really like outward but i feel like the combat is a bit clunky and it would be better with some more freedom to approaching builds, but other than that i like it quite a bit. Nice to finally have a game that doesn't have fast traveling and making the concept of a big open world a real thing.
Glad someone else here is enjoying the game. I'm just excited to see what Nine Dots does next!
Really the combat could be greatly improved by simply shortening(or speeding up) the animations and removing breakthrough points.
That's why I can't wait for Scrap Mechanic's survival mode to launch.
_You can build a house that you can _*_drive around in._*
4:09 Kratos has no need of such a feature.
Edit: And Bayonetta sorta already has one...
That jab at the Simpsons was so perfect.
Seems like he mentions Obradinn in every video and livestream. I haven't heard him gush like this since the Portal review.
The way you described Unheard reminds me of Ghost Trick.
There's another game where you go about the last few moments of a person's life, except in THAT case you're doing it so you can change how things happened, with the intent of keeping the dead person from dying in the first place!
Ghost Trick is one of my top ten faves ever
Outward is a classic in the making
Aw, I miss James Gandolfini. :( Superbly phrased conclusion by the way!
This was a nice review Yahtz.
I think there might be an opening in the market for crafting games where you get to build houses that go "rawr"
In Ark:Survival Evolved, you can build structures on the back of a brontosaurus. And it goes "rawr".
Watching this in class!
He really said all that I've been thinking about unheard.
Yahtzee reviewing Outward how Unheard of!
4:10 *stolen from GHOST N GOBLINS* you strip when you hit the wrong button just once ;p
Would love to see a Beat Cop review in the future :3
Unheard sounds like my english course listenings
If you're looking for more games to tide you over, Antichamber is a great puzzle game that likes to play with non Euclidean geometry.
"Like a rowboat on a ball pit" xD
2:48 I'm pleasantly tickled at the fact that I was actually doing that as he described it
For an actual good game with a single word titel ending in "ard": downward. A first person platform game that manages to avoid being terrible for being in first person by a kind of respawn mechanic in your control. Remember how you create you own respawn points in ori and the blind forest? Yea, like that but at the press of a button you teleport back. See a tricky jump? Place your mark and you can repeat trying it 10 times in 10 seconds. The story is also quite good and becomes clearer the more you play as more information about the world is revealed. And i have even talked about how each stage opens up indifferent ways depending on what planet you choose or an i think time slowing mechanic that is just so natural that i just forgot about it or the combat that doesn't make you a fighter but a nimble twat that has to outmanover things that would overpower you easily if you let them hit you.
Unheard sounds nice im starved for detectivey games so ill take even medicore ones and outward sounds pretty nice too
that unheard boxart... my first question was "who would call their game Unitard" ?
Lol that's how I saw it as well.
I saw an interesting new game on Steam (though it's reviews were mixed), it's called Generation Zero.
“anime voice acting or softcore porn”
i believe the youngsters call it “ecchi.”
And it's art.
Take a shot every time he says Obra Dinn
I'm glad that I'm not the only one that feels this way about outward, The opening is strong, some of the mechanics especially the backpack stuff are cool, and I enjoyed the combat. But I eventually put it down after realizing I A. Suck at the combat after 7 hours B. Maybe I dont want to walk for 20 minutes everytime I die just to get to the same combat I died at.
I'm certain that more than 60% of my playtime was uneventful walking from A to B. I wouldn't mind the lack of fast travel or mounts if they had just let us reload a save rather then kick us back to town or someplace in the middle of bumblefuck nowhere. I like big Oblivion-esq worlds where traveling takes time, I like Darksouls where it retains what you have done and boots you back to a spawn point. You cannot have both of these things. Darksoul's death system works because at the end of the day you usually dont have too far to go to get back where you were or at minimum there are still enemies to fight. Bethesda-likes work because you really have to do the traveling once and if you fuck up you reload as opposed to booting you all the way back to the Imperial City.
TLDR: I really wanted to like this game and I wanted to get a rant out about it.
I'm liking it. The walking is a bit annoying, but figuring out that you can click in on the left thumbstick to autowalk was a lifesaver.
If you're frustrated with the combat btw: tripwire traps. I ignored them at first and then I started using them, and dangggg... You see two bandits in the distance. Set up four of those traps in a row. Hit them with a few arrows to lure them in and bam. First guy's dead and the second guy is probably half dead by the time he gets to you.
Also, unlike Darksouls, shields are OP. No damage gets through if your stability is up. Just sit there and let them swing away until you see an opening.
Yeah the issue with lack of fast travel/mounts is that in order to not make it a walking simulator you need to localize content. With Outward there is way to much go all the way across the map to another zone, do 1 quest which sends you to the other side of the map, only to be told to go all the way back. The death/no reloading system doesn't bother me outside of it being lackluster, random spawn across the map, and the inevitable run and tent . Most scenarios lack depth to make the system interesting, like one I was imprisoned in a mine and thought I would have to find a clever way to get out... Nope just slept, told the guard I didn't want to mine, and all my shit was in the next room.
Still like the game, interesting concepts but mediocre execution.
Where is the huniepop guy? He always filled me with determination
Maybe he's cutting down to once a month?
Yahtzee, you might be interested in Analogue: A Hate Story. It came out about 7 years ago, but has a similar style of storytelling to Obra Dinn. The story centers around a generation ship in the distant future that went extinct before it reached its destination, and the player character interacts with the onboard AI to determine what happened to it. It's more of a visual novel than a game, so it probably wouldn't be very good for Zero Punctuation, but you may want to take a look at it regardless since you seem to like that style
Very good
Strip down to your pants in Dark Souls? Hang on, that's the Darksign, isn't it?
Outwards amazing ifffff youve got a friend to play it with you can pseudo fast travel and lack of plot doesnt matter so much you can just Skyrim it also sad he didnt touch on the unique approach to magic in this game runic mage is one of my favorite builds really cool shit
Guess he didn't play outward long enough to experience the seasons. I'm minding my own business farming fish and potions to get good armor cuz I'm a coward, then all of a sudden I wake up to snow outside my house and have to deal with the cold.
If you want something to fill the release gap here are 3 ideas:
1: Kenshi: the sims meets dark souls
2: Space station 13: you have to google it and it is multiplayer but just give it a chance because it’s the kind of game where you can force feed other players lasagnas where the main ingredient is LSD.
3: A retro review on Duke Nukem 3D. Just because.
Fuckin hell Yahtzee, you really destroyed Piers Morgan there.
I approve.
When Yahtzee described replays of _Return of the Obra Dinn_ as being "little more than a very atmospheric corpse party" I have to wonder... was he actually referring to the atmospheric Japanese horror game series _Corpse Party...?_
He’s talking about the drought already when “Days Gone” is coming out this week - makes me curious if he’s actually gonna play it?
0:30 I swear to god I read Cuntheard
"Unheard and Outward" sounds like one video game title lol
He said Chrono Trigger woo!
Got here so early there is no dislikes, as it should be.
I disliked it juuuuust to spite you.
Me and my wife have been playing outward and I do agree with Yahtzee for the first segment of the game the story is incredibly bare bones, but there is a story it just requires a bit more investment than he probably had time for in his review. There is a very deep interesting game here that you can couch coop. It just takes some time to get rolling.
Katana ZERO is what he needs to review. it's fun and I think he will have fun with it
The day Yahtzee reviews Roller Coaster Tycoon
Marks the day I sold my soul for a cupcake.
Just Monika...
“have a nice weekend, jackass!”
guys, huniepop 2 was announced. It is time for Yahtzee to do the review
You're not Paradox Acres, so shut up.
Unheard sounds like a PSVR game which is also a murder mystery where you listen to everyone talking separately.
Another week , Another group of Indie games
Indie.
The front cover of unheard looks like it says unitard
A thought just crossed my mind, anyone who hasn't played Obra Dinn should play Unheard first, since it's similar but worst. They'd probably like Unheard since it seems like a good introduction to this style of narrative game, then be blown away by Obra Dinn.
That piers morgan burn
Hey yahtzee when are you going to review night in the woods?
Is he ever going to review Apex Legends? Or should I stitch his Overwatch, PUBG and Fortnite reviews together?
Yes.
Cool video!
Yahtzee, please review Onimusha warlords, it was remastered and released this January but went under the radar, it was one of my favorites on ps2 and would love to hear you bashing it
Weeaboo resident evil with swords. Done.
Corpse Party is already pretty atmospheric.
You should review Kenshi if you need some more indies
Try ark. You can bild a house on top of giant sea monster. It will move and it will bite
An idea given you have few games to review. Have you looked into Mechanicum? Give us a 40k review man!
Youre awake he isn't that much a 40k fan?
at least agony lived up to its name
0:44 Oh, I like Corpse Party.
When you’re so early there are no comments to read
TheOneAndOnlyMuffinCat that’s why we proofread
Review Tales of Berseria!
Remember when G4 would occasionally play these? Neither do i.
Would Yahtzee want to try Kerbal Space Program?
Dishwasher: Vampire Smile review please?
3:35 *wait- isn't that ANIMAL CROSSING* ??? Oo one of those guys didn't happen to be a raccoon?
Give Earth Defense Force 5 a look you might hate to like it.
These game titles sound like they could be one game when listed.
I was interested in Outward, but the Steam reviews had me questioning it's quality, so I moved my attention toward other things. This review convinces me that wasn't a bad idea.
It was more bug infested than a fucking wasp nest at launch.
During its first full week, it was almost objectively unplayable, until they rushed to fix the most hazardous bugs.
To give a reference point: A major bug was that your inventory would partially wipe for no reason, and it is obviously an RPG in wish even "trashy" loot is important.
To be fair, it was only made by ten people (yes I’m using that excuse, sue me) but it’s really turned up now with DLC on the way. If you have the opportunity, I would take it up.
Unheard sounds distinctly like Danganropa.
Perhaps Ace Combat 7 just in case of a deeper drought period this year. Came out in January after a long 12 year wait.
Hello arw you using data?
So we're not gonna talk about how Pregame Discharge is linked in the end card? All right then
I'd like to submit for your review in these trying times, Deep Rock Galactic.
Having recently discovered Deep Rock Galactic, I would strongly agree.
Got back into space station 13 to combat the drought.
I recomended Yahzee play Kenshi..........This is a TRUE EMPTY PLOT GAME XD
Outward was made by deep silver? The ones who made the dead island games, thats one thing i noticed in this video
Published by Deep Silver. IE, they funded it. It was developed by Nine Dots, a small company of about 10 people.
CHRONO TRIGGER IS PERFECT TAKE THAT BACK!!!
outward is good in co op
I thought Yahtzee was making a joke about the title of one of these games... then I realised my speakers were fcuked
Oh dear
