I don't know what's funnier, Yathzee's intentions for the tie breaker or the fact Sucker Punch and Radical actually went through with it.
+Werezilla I think its the latter lol
The funniest thing was Yahtzee's reaction. He genuinely didn't think anyone would take him up for it.
Probably the second.
Also, does anyone have a link to where I can find out what happened? I kind of missed it.
Wait.
You mean to tell me that they actually did that? Was someone drunk?
@@drakefire6675 Given that both pictures had unicorns and rainbows in them...
Yeah, probably. I'm guessing absinthe or Listerine myself.
So much respect for both Radical and Sucker Punch for actually doing Yahtzee's challenge, I can't think of many developers who would even consider such a request.
Wait, they actually did that? Wholly fuck...
+ManiacX1999 www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/extra-punctuation/6228-Yahtzee-s-Prototype-vs-InFamous-Challenge.4
+Patterned Pike this made my day
yeah, when i found out they did it really made my day.
+Kolbe Howard Oh damn, I did not expect that
10/10
See, this is why I love gaming. You can give 2 devs a challenge so stupid they both participate and that's acceptable. Mad props to radical and sucker punch for being good sports, cause if this were between EA and activision or Ubisoft they'd probably file a copyright strike.
And then they would charge you for the ''challenge results DLC bundle'' when they were done.
Both Radical and Sucker Punch actually drew the competitor's protagonist in a dress, as a princess. Sucker Punch won by drawing Mercer as a sweet princess on a unicorn. Radical Entertainment lost by drawing Cole as a dirty Vegas showgirl.
wow. yep unicorns win it for sure but since both featured one, the pink dress was the deciding factor. You could maybe bring home Mercer to meet the parents and be ok but Cole is the one you fuck and never speak of again.
Actually the victory went to Sucker Punch because they gave Alex Mercer breasts.
Links. Now
@@TheCorrodedMan yes please!
they posted the pictures in an old escapistmagazine article
I wonder if the game developers actually sent him that shit.
They did! Type it into google images. They are great.
Painted Dead that's just hilarious
and now a quote form the article:
"Thanks to Radical Entertainment and Sucker Punch Productions for being such good sports. You sick, sick fucks."
-YZ
Painted Dead i dont even ... im tempted to call bullshit but i think its legit
Fuzzy Greens it is...
I genuinely love the fact that both of the devs went to the trouble of accepting Yahtzee's challenge. I mean…let's be honest here, it was supposed to be a joke, Yahtzee didn't think they'd actually do it - or, in all likelihood, even SEE it. I wonder how they could pay enough attention to ZP to receive the challenge and yet still not have made a game lacking everything Yahzee hates…Anyway, I think the thing I love is that Yahtzee's opinion is so highly respected that two triple-A game developers would go so far out of their way to win his approval without actually doing the thing Yahtzee's supposed to approve of. Why not, say, make fantastic games to win his approval, if it's that important? XD
Wait, when did this happen?
DaMaster012 I dunno, the answer's somewhere in the comments. I just know it happened and that I've read the articles about it on Extra Punctuation. XD
#DaMaster012
www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/extra-punctuation/6228-Yahtzee-s-Prototype-vs-InFamous-Challenge
Thomas Chitham Thanks.
The best part is the article was ended with "You sick, sick fucks."
Prototype is just more "fun", cuz you can just fuck around and go crazy, shooting random civilians, blow up a ton of crap, throw cars and tanks. In inFamous you definitely have less freedom, but it has a more interesting story and character ,etc.
Zecobellic Agreed, prototype is better gameplay wise, infamous is better story and character wise, both are equally great.
i used the claws for most of the game, i like using the jump kick to fly towards groups, fuck them up with claws, and repeat
And then they actually bloody did it
God bless you, 2011 games industry, and bless you Suckerpunch and Radical, even if you’re not making Prototype or Infamous 3(s).
Who else Googled "10/29/2008 Zero Punctuation" to see what Yahtzee was referring to when he claimed to come up with the supervillain sandbox idea first? (btw it was his Saints' Row 2 review)
Crackdown would like to have a word with both of you.
inFamous development began in 2006
Playing Prototype felt like playing The Incredible hulk but with different attacks and a hell of a lot bloodier.
Wow thats ....too accurate
I saw it as basically a Venom game.
Radical also made Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, which is the best Hulk game.
"...while alex can shoot blood out of his hands at jet velocity and fly, like emo peter pan" lol, absolutely brilliant line.
I love how this is considered to be a tie. Apparently no one was paying attention to where Yahtzee said "Prototype loses several million points right out of the gate by being about a man with amnesia" while the "several million" was clearly a hyperbole on Yahtzee's part the point still stands and Prototype should've started at -1. Thus putting Infamous as the winner
Holy shit, I cannot stop laughing
I can't believe they actually went with it, that's beautiful.
The fact that both studios actually responded to Yahtzee's challenge proved two things for me:
1) That Yahtzee was growing in popularity and influence at that time (especially when he did the Painkiller review and Steam sales for it rose over 500%).
2) That I would forever support both studios because they were okay with having a little bit of fun at their own expense. Sadly, the developer for Prototype has shut down after disappointing sales of Prototype 2.
Infamous is more about story, and balanced game play
Prototype is about MURDER MURDER MURDER, MURDER EVERYTHING
Don't forget to eat them too.
I played both games, both are equally fun.
Where is the bra ? I don't see no bra. So until i see a bra, i will not belive you.
bra
MadlyPumpkin
Both developers participated in the contest. Infamous won because they sent in a big breasted Alex Mercer riding a unicorn.
Tabula Rasa Gaming where?! pics or it didn't happen
www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/6228-Yahtzees-Prototype-vs-InFamous-Challenge
Definitely didn't seem like whipfist was the best. Definitely useful, especially for taking out helicopters, but not the most powerful of his powers. The sword seemed the best general purpose ability, and claws had the advantage of speed. Hammerfist was great for tanks. The higher difficulty setting encourages you to mix it up a bit.
JustAnotherGaian even the gun was fun since it automatically locks on, fun to look at. My favourite is actually muscle mass
I mean it takes a while before you realise it's potential , it lets you one hit helicopters, break tanks in a few hits, throw cars really far, every car you punch explodes, when you punch a person they explode and the damage increase is awesome
I would say that Prototype is better than inFamous,
but inFamous 2 is way better than Prototype 2.
Anything is better than Prototype 2.
+Roggi Eh..... I liked Prototype 2.
Thankfully it had no bullshit online or multiplayer achievements, thus making it the only game I've ever gotten all the achievements for.
So props for that.
anything is better than heller actually, they could expand mercer but they just had to fuck him up...
Still.... I love Prototype 2.... such a great sandbox, so... visceral.
Literal and metaphorical.
Esekiel Kleyer agreed.
It's in the top comments, but people still ask, so I'll save them a couple clicks and say go here for the bra-picture contest: www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/extra-punctuation/6228-Yahtzee-s-Prototype-vs-InFamous-Challenge
Who won the picture contest, you know just because you said there'd be one and not for any other reason...just....curious..
Infamous
Ok everyone we all can agree prototype is better....because it won the bikini contest
Franklin Bern Actually the infamous guys sent in the better picture, i.e. alex mercer with boobs on a unicorn, so infamous must be better
legion999
but...dat unicorn
Franklin Bern It's a nice unicorn, and an attratctive gender-flipped alex but the InFamous artist did it, so...they win. Thems the rules. However note that yahtzee said "Therefore InFamous must be the better game. Buy InFamous. Prototype's still good, though. Buy it as well."
legion999
Technically though....yahtzee ran the contest and he said prototype won the contest even without bikini. But yeah I know infamous is probably better I've played it for a few hours but nothing beats running around and murdering entire blocks of people in prototype without consequence
Wait they actually took part in this? Give me dat link now.
Best idea ever, a cross over of infamous and prototype.
I started watching this video in a playlist, threw my hand up in the air, thinking "I just watched this one", then Yahtzee pulled the carpet from under my feet and all that and I was sufficiently entertained.
Alex can just turn into a woman, so Prototype wins.
I'm pretty sure Yahtzee said "the other game's protagonist" so by your logic Infamous would win. And Infamous did end up winning when Yahtzee saw the pictures.
NubPS3 I thought he said Prototype wins without the Bikini?
I think InFAMOUS is a better game, though.
wait what!
Yeah, you can't really call it a competition when you have a shapeshifting dude as an advantage to draw whatever you want.
Radical tried, but their picture gave me nightmares for years.
No Cole can’t see throw people
Prototype was made by the people who made Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (back in the game cube era), which is a game that inFAMOUS rips off to no end.
And they actually send in the pictures my gawd!
yes he did. this show premiers on the escapist and he did a writen article.... and actualy picked a winner based on the pictures. I think we was all shocked to see the creators actually decided ya know what lets play Yahtzees game.
Emo Peter Pan.. for fucks sake how does he always get his joked
Heres the end result of the challenge www.kotaku.com.au/2009/07/infamous-defeats-prototype-in-cross-dressing-playoff/
Wow...
Weird...
"Like an emo Peter Pan" - I lost it ahahaa
I can't believe both development parties actually participated in this little contest Crowshaw came up with on a whim. I seriously wonder if he was laughing his ass off out of sheer confusion and embarrassment after receiving each entry. I get the feeling if there ever is a prototype 3 along with infamous 3, we might be returning to his little contest again.
Actually, Yahtsee, Alex in game has no real amnesia. In game Alex is the actual virus, confusing as it may be. You can't forget what you never saw. Also, pre-game Alex released the virus. Blackwatch was against the virus this whole time, and was not advocating for it.
Also, Musclemass = best power, if you bought all combat upgrades. Whipfist's damage can't compare in terms of effectiveness. If you want long-range, using maxed Musclemass to air kick, and then cannonball if you still didn't reach the target
Yeah, but that's a revelation that doesn't come up until later. At very least the first half of the game (not including the flash forwards I think) Alex in the game thinks that he is Alex Mercer but is having memory trouble. So initially it's a "guy with amnesia" even thought that's not how it works out in the end.
Yeaaaah but theres still the fact that Gentek was weaponizing the virus and Blackwatch deciding that "gee that sounds great" allowing for the super soldiers to be formed to fight you.
But if the virus can gain the memories of anyone it eats, and it eats mercer, why does he have amnesia?
PiecesMissing
Well he does get the memories back, so it could be that the trauma of Alex dying somehow disrupted the virus from accessing all of Alex's memories at the start.
hunterofyou He knows. he wrote an entire Extra Punctuation about how Prototype 2 fucks up that awesome twist.
Prototype is still a fun game
i didn't use the whipfist at all because it takes ages to charge and you're better off with the claws or the blade anyway
+timebomb456 ikr, for me it was useless until I got the grabbing power and even then I only used it when I wanted to grab something or someone that was a fair distance away. Or if I was bored. Like REALLY bored.
LOL at the funny parts, especially with the main character and the end credits.
Haven't played Infamous yet, but Prototype is quite fun (even though its performance is shit on modern PCs) - very few games match the amount of different movement and killing options the Prototype gives you - the devastator attacks, grabbing and throwing cars on the run, etc. Everything Yahtzee said at 3:31 is actually doable in the game)
The funny thing is, when I played Prototype all I kept on thinking was,
"Man, Spider-man has really gone full out with being Venom... oh, wait... I'm not playing Spider-man Web of Shadows..."
Because there level design is so damn similar.
***** I get what you're trying to do, but you failed to see what I was getting at. Apart from the look of the character and the general fighting moves, both of them move roughly the same and you move through the levels in almost the same manner. Either game felt like a mod to the other.
They did, I forget which one was the winner but you can google it quick if you're interested.
Why thanks, talking cloud! This is the best trip ever.
"...wearing a woman's bra."
As opposed to wearing a man's bra, I suppose.
You mean "the bro?"
Loved inFamous way more than PROTOTYPE...
Loved inFamous 2 way more than PROTOTYPE 2..
To settle this I need to play inFamous 3 and PROTO.. wait nvm inFamous won Fatality.
There is a post called "Yahtzee's Prototype vs. InFamous Challenge" at the Escapist.
I love Prototype. I may get it again. I loved Infoumous too.
Prototype should automatically win cuz it goes windows, ps3 and 360 while fucking Infamous is a ps3 exclusive
No, that is stupid.
pikachulover2000 You might as well be saying "Toilet Tycoon is better than Uncharted 3 because it's on PC," game play and design actually has to take place for a game to be considered good.
Also, yes...Toilet Tycoon is an actual game.
TLB95Switchblade I didn't think about the fact Sony helped develop it, my apologies for such an ignorant comment. I don't know about Microsoft's dealings with gears of war or Halo but I do know that Titan fall became a Xbox exclusive after Microsoft paid a large sum (Do you know why it was still released on the PC?) and that is still ridiculous when a company does that. I do not however see how Sony should be "commended" for having creative control of a company. To be able to change the final product of a game someone else created seems wrong on the basis of taking someone else hard work and doing what you want with it. I have no idea how Sony handles their creative control but I still feel that a company should not be praised for having it.
"infamous picked the dick path and became an exclusive".... You mean the game developed by a subsidiary of Sony, published by Sony and marketted by Sony? It didn't become an exclusive, it was an exclusive by design. Sony and Microsoft have never shared their software and likely never will.
Gears of War and TitanFall are perfect examples of what you speak of, Microsoft just doing what they can to buy their way into the people's good books because they would otherwise only have Halo to hold hostage, a series that has staganated since Halo 3.Infamous shouldn't be ostracised because of who developed it, Sony should be commended for having creative control of Team ICO, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch and Guerilla Games.
*****
Right? The scary thing is that there are people who agree.@.@;
InFamous wins of course because InFamous was an actual good game.
and they had the better bra photo
Prototype was a fun game, if nothing for the superpowered parkour and the fact that you can flying kick helicopters out of the sky.
Penningtontj And you can clap so hard that you blow off upper torso of people in front of you.
First time I saw this at the whole 200 story elbow drop I nearly died laughing it was so funny imagining an old man elbow dropping from up high.
Infamous, both devs did send in pics. It's somewhere on the escapist website.
wait, infamous won because mercer sounds like if mister bean were a mass murderer? yahtzee, why wouldnt you give them a point? mass murderer mister bean is awesome!
Now I want to know if either developer did send that pic to him.
i like using the blade arm
I remember seeing the images in a gaming magazine some time back. They're more funny than disturbing.
whats funny is the side missions part, Cole actually does take photos at one point.
Accually they did release those. it was brilliant!
Sniper later died. It was a quick funeral. His coffin contained an iPod that played the audios of all of Yahtzee's videos. When the audio finally ends, it is rumored that Sniper's corpse will come back to life to scream out Yahtzee's full name before exploding because of the gaseous pressure.
Made my day.
OMG that is how I take out bases in prototype all the time >=D
Thanks dude!
Have to say, in terms of brooding antiheroes, the one thing that I liked more about Prototype is how you find out that "Zombified murderhobo virus that thinks it's Alex Mercer" turns out to be a far better person than the original Alex Mercer, and that while Alex's sister Dana recoils from him when she first sees him, and his ex-girlfriend was a terrified corporate plant, by the end of the game Dana actually like the viral spaghetti monster far more than her original brother.
Virus Lives Matter!
Wait, they actually do in his case, and isn't spreading toxicity, unlike the rest if the viruses sprouting that!
i can't belive i took the time to find the pictures...
AND NOT MAKE A LINK!!!
No, the contest was that the creators of one game sent in a picture of the OPPOSING game. Alex Mercer is the main character of Prototype, which means the creators of infamous sent in the picture :P
Yes
Next time, you should say the tiebreaker is whoever bribes the best :P
ok i really want to get prototype now
And so it begins, my plan to stir controversy has succeeded, Thanks you catz for the assistant...
Would someone give me a link to the pictures, because I would love to see that!
Here you go:
www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/extra-punctuation/6228-Yahtzee-s-Prototype-vs-InFamous-Challenge
Thanks
how about a link to the video where he pitches his idea of a sandbox game? 0:37
This was a really fun game to play
I enjoyed prototype for it's diverse method of attack, thou my prefered attack style was boulderfist jumping into random helicopters while wearing an exoskeleton armor.
If only they added a combat style meter for bonus xp, where you get rewarded for using diverse attack methods in short time.
I would love to see a video of the two protagonists fighting, like that "Skyrim vs Fallout" video.
nice ending
I feel you bro...
So this was where the legend actually happened..
That was a damn good one.
honestly its really fun jumping up from a tall building and extendo tentacling a helicopter out of exxistence
Thanks man! I just laughed my arse off :D
Rewatching this 11 years later (not sure why) and it's interesting in hindsight which one is better. I'd say back then I liked Infamous a lot more but Prototype aged better (partially due to having a PC port).
But Infamous 2 imo is the best out of all 5 games (3 infamous and 2 prototype). As great as many licensed superhero games have been since the 2010s, I'd love to see more like these that aren't tied to existing IPs.
wait wait wait, you only used the extendo tentacle? I loved going around in the civilian areas with normal cops and punting civilians into other civilians.
Have you gotten the pictures yet?
0:40 HEY THAT WAS MY EIGHTH BIRTHDAY!!!!
They had me at tentacles
where can I see them? :D
Thank you I was about to say, I always got infamous and prototype confused I always assumed they were all the sane
I actually clicked on Infamous, thinking it was the Prototype review, and I didn't realize until about a minute in when he flashed the box art. Yeah, they're a bit similar.
@SH1KAKA You do. You can see it on The Escapist, via Yahtzee's column, Extra Punctuation.
Did they ever sent those pictures. If so I would really like to see them
he nailed this one
THat actually happened? *looks up article* HOLY CRAP THAT PICTURE IS AMAZING! XD
whats the intro song? if you don't mind me asking
I liked the reference to his Saints Row 2 review. "Mankind Has Yet to Recognise my Genius. The Game"
The article on the winning pictures is on the escapist magazine website!
www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/extra-punctuation/6228-Yahtzees-Prototype-vs-InFamous-Challenge
Thank you for sparing me the time to search for it. I don't know if I would see it otherwise :)
did you evre get the picture
"Emo peter pan" XD Hoy shit thats funny!
@Catastrogue Agreed, befor I got the best of my upgrades. I just stuck with picking up weapons and shooting people or rocket lauchers, I just liked using the weapons for some reason
Haha, you saw the pictures then. I'm having trouble removing those images from my head... especially when I'm playing InFamous
I think the parkour was better in Prototype, but the gameplay could get so hectic and button-mashing that sometimes I'd die without knowing what happened. Infamous I like better all around, because I always knew what was going on and I what I had to do in combat. Prototype, I always thought 'I could die just because I frantically tried to do the wrong move of my overly huge list of options, or SOMEHOW missed that tiny blue light that means a rocket is about to hit my face in the middle of this clusterfuck'. Infamous is like carefully doing one thing very well, and Prototype is like running around trying to do ten things at once and hoping you're lucky enough to get one of them done.
My favorite way to kill in Prototype is picking up a car and then running in to people. And I like to take the appearance of the guy who looks like Mr. Rodgers and sing "It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood" while I'm doing it.
wheres the link tho
that is quite simply amazing XD
Wow. That was certainly interesting. I didn't know that existed and I'm not sure I want to thank you for pointing it out. :P I never thought to check the extra punctuation archives for that. So now I have closure on the matter but saw what I cannot unsee. T_T
