  • Welcome to my small workshop! These shop organization ideas can help you work more efficiently, and my workshop layout ideas may inspire you to make the most of your small workshop or tiny DIY work space. It might not be the prettiest shop, but it’s well organized and flexible enough to adapt to a wide range of projects. I also love my wall-mounted small shop dust collection and air filtration setup, which takes up no floor space, but provides major personal safety and cleanliness benefits.
    I posted a PDF document with all my organization & storage labels that’s free to download, so you can copy and paste to create your own shop label system… fyxdt.com/docs/Shop-Labels-Mi...

    Really nice setup Mike! Reminds me of my grandfather's old shop. He crammed everything in a 10'x5' utility closet next to the carport at his house in New Orleans. He drug everything out when he wanted to use it, including a full size table saw, router table, and many other full size tools on wheels. Then he packed it all back up when he was done. He made some great pieces of furniture and crafts from that little shop!

      Hi Thomas, it sounds like your grandfather’s shop was a Swiss Army knife that opened up when it was time to play! I also take tools outside when needed, like my chop saw (so much sawdust!). It’s great that you have fond memories of your grandfather and his shop. Do you have any of the furniture or crafts that he made?

      @@MikeFyxdt that sounds like a good description of it, but it was not nearly as clean as yours! Yes, we have a few things still in the family. He assembled Emperor grandfather clocks for all his kids and grandkids, and he made a buffet for my mom, cradles for the great grandkids, quilt racks, and various other things. I inherited most of his tools but had to sell his Unisaw and ended up selling his bandsaw, planer, and a few other things that I never used. I still have the radial arm, drill press, miter saw, all his manual hand tools, old power tools, clamps, and misc stuff. One of these days I'll get it more organized, but I need to get my 87 Mustang running again so I can move it out of the way!

      @@trbstang That’s awesome! Getting your Mustang running and having access to garage/tool space sounds like a win+win. Easies said than done, right? 😁

    Nice Mike. We still have my Electrolux too (same model and color) from 1981ish. It’s like a Timex. It has bested everything else vac related in the family. The wife hates it even though it cleans the carpet after her new toy ones haven’t.

      Duane - I agree with everything you are saying! My wife shuns ours because it is 'old'. We have gone through 1 Hoover and 2 Kenmore's in the last 15 years...the Electrolux still beats them all! :)

      @1D10CRACY - Thanks! It has definitely been a work in progress, and I'm really happy where it has evolved to. BTW, I've really been enjoying your truck renovation videos. Now I want to wig-wag the lights on my Mustang! :)

    Wow I wish I was half as organized as you! Nice shop!!! Great organization. I also like how you make use of stuff no longer needed from the house. Wow that old vacuum is a classic. The curtain was the icing on the cake - I have decided your shop is the best I've ever seen. :o)

      Hi Al! I do have a a college size refrigerator down in the basement. It is packed with beer and hard cider, with very little room for peanut butter cups. But your suggestion is a good one, so this weekend I will make some room… 😁

    Nice layout and thanks for extra effort to film and post. I work in a micro shop also but I covered all the walls with French cleats. I also like to recycle things and seem like if you keep something long enough you will find the perfect use for it. I obtained several heavy duty metal filing cabinets that are perfect for storage of lots of things. Even built a metal lateral filing cabinet into my primary work bench.

      @Rusty Guy - thank you for watching! I think that being frugal and recycling are at the core of all great home workshops. Metal filing cabinets are a great idea for storage… I think I have one that’s not being used in another part of the basement. I’ll bet I could find a use for it! 😁

    So iif you work on your cars do you have to run up and down from the basement to the garage to get a tool?

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před 2 lety

      Hi Tom! I will pack a tote with the tools I think I’ll need before a garage project. It’s inevitable that I will still need to make a trip or two to the basement shop though. As I build out the garage space hopefully I’ll have storage for the garage-specific tools. Until then I get my exercise! 😁
