    Having worked in the aircraft industry, I was exposed to 5S and Lean Manufacturing. I brought some of it home with me and all I can say is it's a constant work in progress. I set something up and organize it only to change it later to make it more efficient. But it does make for a better work environment. I sometimes look around and realize I have way too many tools out and I take a minute to sort through them and put them back in the tool box before I lose something. Also for me keeping the floor swept is THE most important thing I do. I work with a lot of small parts and when you launch a detent or spring across the shop a clean floor makes recovery easier.

    Doug I think you need to do a "Shop Rescue" show. Taking other people's trashed shops and garages back to a well organized working space. I started reorganizing my sockets. Between my stuff and the stuff I inherited form my Grandfather, i found multiples of a number of Sockets. Of course not enough to have another full set.... So what do you do with Extraneous stuff?

    You're 100% correct in your assessment of keeping things organized. I was raised that way by my Pop and grandfather. I worked in a speed shop for years and then a 40+ year career in aviation. Keeping things in an organized method is extremely important. Leaving a tool someplace on an aircraft is definitely not acceptable. When practical I have always put a tool away as soon as I'm finished using it. Everything has a designated place to live and locations are labeled so it's easy to see if there's something missing.

Im so bad that every tool has its place in my box and when i put my screwdrivers back even the writing on the screwdriver has to be turned up so it can be read. Back when adam posted the video i even showed it to my wife. She said he must be kin to you. Lol . I've been working towards this, and I'll tell you it was a big step to get from "where did I use that last?" to "I keep that in "x" drawer". I would love to have for instance a screwdriver drawer like you show, but I struggle with the value of that vs all screwdrivers in a drawer or two. Simply because of the cost of tool storage. Tool boxes are damn expensive!

    • @OneEyeCustoms
      @OneEyeCustoms  Před rokem +1

      @J Bondioli I agree with you on the costs of tool storage these days. Maybe look outside the box and just create a place that each screwdriver has its own spot. Maybe on a peg board or something that works for you. Separate out the useless ones and don’t organize them. Sell them or give them away. Once you organize tools, you will find you don’t buy more because the old ones were lost and then found. It takes a while to get there, but we’ll worth the effort once done. Good luck and thanks for watching!

It’s fun to see other people’s opinions. I also like to know what tools people keep in their vehicles and how do you organize them? After a project, I am usually satisfied and tired as hell. So the next day, it is cleaned up and start a new project. Tool box has labels. Most of my tools are my Dads when he passed.
    I spent all summer, cleaning shed and garage after a divorce of 18 years, among other daily projects. I am almost done. I like organizing sockets all in a drawer and heavy, can't find nothing. In the winter it is organizing my office, which is the last room to organize and the biggest.
    SILVERWARE: SMALL DRAWER. 1 for each wooden spoons, knives, spatulas, pot holders, LARGE drawer for special occasion buffet supplies and all that is, all in sections. Silverware organized by dividers. Everything its place. Most used, closest to stove or dinnerware.

      I believe it is cheaper all around to do it out of PVC.

    Doug, I had watched Adams video of your workshop earlier and am now on your channel. One thing I have been plagued with in my garage is the dust from angle grinders since I also do some welding. Do you do all of your angle grinding outside or do you have any suggestions on controlling the dust in your shop?

    • @OneEyeCustoms
      @OneEyeCustoms  Před 9 měsíci

      Here is a link to a video I did on my dust collection.

    Hello sir, love the garage/shop info! What bench/tabletop height(s) do you prefer?

    • @OneEyeCustoms
      @OneEyeCustoms  Před rokem +1

      @cheech911 I like a bit taller bench height because I’m usually standing when working on something. It reduces the amount of “bent over” time and sore back. If I do sit, I have a bar height stool I use. It really depends on how tall you are and what feels comfortable to you. A taller bench also gives you more storage space under it.
      Thanks for watching and the comment!!

    X3M, nice ride! Do you have a separate wood shop? I didn't see a table saw in there.

      @@OneEyeCustoms I'd love to see a tour of that, especially how you're handling lumber storage. I'm in the process of organizing my garage and it's a challenge to find storage options (particularly for sheet goods) that are both space efficient and easily accessible. Unless the wood is so warped it's unusable, I tend to hoard everything since I'll be able to use it on a project one day.

    What socket organizers do you use? I have used Hansen's and harbor freight plastic pin ones and they skip certain sockets and the pins break.

    • @OneEyeCustoms
      @OneEyeCustoms  Před rokem +1

      I use those as well. No one seams to make a good complete set that doesn’t skip or isn’t a lot of $$$
      I made a magnetic one for my favorite full set.

    As I watch this, I remember the other video you did talking about your eye injury. I have a permanent injury of my own, so I say this with all sincerity to others watching the video, please notice that Doug has lots of pairs of safety glasses throughout his shop. I keep a pair of safety glasses on top of my table saw when it is not in use so I remember to use them everytime, as well as on top of or near several tools and pieces of equipment.

    Hey Doug, do you have a recommendation for a tool bag? I find that I need something to help me schlep a bunch of power tools across the lot to different projects. Thanks

    • @OneEyeCustoms
      @OneEyeCustoms  Před rokem +1

      I like the Husky brand bags. I like ones that batteries fit in the side pouches as well as hand tools. Then everything else goes into the center of the bag. My bag has eight pouches around it on the outside and some pocket pouches on the inside as well as the big center pocket or pouch.

    Hey Doug, I have a question: how would you move all of your snap on drawers with the screw drivers etc. as in, move to another residence. They’re obviously firm in place, thanks to the work you’ve done to them. But would you gather the loose items and put them in a box?

    • @OneEyeCustoms
      @OneEyeCustoms  Před rokem +2

      @Michael Chilton I would absolutely move those boxes as is. All the tools left in the drawers. They are all very well contained. I would load the box on a truck or trailer, strap it down real good and have at it. Might need a quick adjustment when it gets to the now spot, but would save a ton of time rather than removing everything.

    • @OneEyeCustoms
      @OneEyeCustoms  Před rokem

      @Python 357 it was the very first time my father flew his ultralight aircraft. He was taxiing down his grass runway and it lifted about 15’ It scared him and he pushed down a little to quick and flexed the suspension enough that the prop hit and broke the tip off. It was a pterodactyl model ultralight. Look it up if you have time.

    This is a standard method of organization for shops or manufacturing facilities or even offices. Saying this is "OCD" is the dumbest remark. Do you have all your kitchen utensils simply on the floor or on the table all the time ? No of course you don´t you have drawers and cabinets filled with like items, same applies here. In Germany this is what a call a man kitchen in the US you call it man cave.
