I think I speak for the majority when I say that we don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a 'dream shop' when we'd rather spend it on useful tools! This is so much better, too, than someone else's idea of how to organize my shop (or in my case, craft room.) Thanks!

I was expecting you to use the three strands of copper wire still inside all the plastic sheathing. Much more durable. Thank you for sharing though. You got everything very well organised. Am definitely jealous. All my tools are scattered in drawers and other random places.
While watching the part about hanging the nutdrivers I noticed that sometimes the magnets will come off with the nutddriver instead of staying on the hook. You mentioned that you had tried putting a screw through the magnet to attach it directly to the board but it did not hold the nutdriver securely. I had an idea on how to tweak that to give you the best of both methods. Put a screw through the magnet and then put a few washers on the screw. Use however many washers you need to give the same spacing as when the magnets are on the hooks. This way your magnets will stay put and still have the full holding power to keep the nutdrivers in place. Thanks for the great video!

@@herrickkimball Ah, yes - the true secret to life! Fancy cars and nice houses are just icing on the cake, but a good partner in life is a reward all its own. For a man to find the right woman is no easy task (can be enjoyable!!) but well worth the effort. But the biggest problem I have with my tool collection is my dang son - he never puts stuff back! But it least I'll know what's missing and where it goes. You know, this sounds like an excellent Father-Son project. And with all the new house-building going on I think I have a great supply of free Romex. Now if the temps just drop below 100* I'd have it made - one of the drawbacks to living in CA's Great Central Valley.

The key mechanical feature in this system is that the screw fixes the hook from rotating, wobbling etc. Pegboards inherently have that issue. Great work and thanks for sharing!
Actual pegboard hooks are rather expensive and don't often exactly fit your purpose.
Also, around here 7/16" OSB is half the price of actual pegboard HDF/Masonite
and is much more robust. I covered 3 walls of my shop (256 sq.ft.) with 7/16" OSB
for $160.
This is by far the most creative tool wall organization video I have ever come across. Most of the videos nowadays are using $$$$ worth of power tools and accesssories to create an organized wall. A quick tip that a roll of rebar wire ties is an affordable alternative to stripping Romex for copper wire. Thanks for the inspiration, my shop has never been so functional!
Aren’t the ties thinner gauge than the copper he’s using?
Definitely a thinner gauge. I do think the ties can be and are useful. However, my experience is rebar ties want to rust with any elevated moisture in the air. 🤷🏼♂️

My grandfather’s given name was Luke. No middle name. Died in the mid ‘60’s. He was often referred to as ‘Lukie’ with affection by my father. And like you, Luke was creative and invariably made things work. I have inherited a smidgeon of Luke’s creativity and when I come up with something I consider a stroke of genius, I announce to my wife…….’Honey…..I’ve just done a Lukie’. She always knows what I mean. Your creativity reminded me of that wonderful guy.

My wife thinks i spend more time organizing than doing, but I love to be organized. In my sleep i know where everything is located. I have hung chicken wire on every wall of my shop. My tools hang on the chicken wire. Very easy to reorganize, add, and well add, never delete. I hate boxes and drawers because I hate opening and closing while hunting. I like to see everything on walls. Nice video.

To me - this is a dream shop. Why? Because it's obviously well thought out, well loved and well used. What more could a man want? AND I love using inexpensive parts to make something so useful and helpful. Tool organization can be such a pain at times but I love that your solution is not only inexpensive, but also very flexible and easily changed to fit your changing needs/wants/whatever. I've saved this video for over a year. And now finally after we've moved to a different house I've got a small corner of the shed to store my tools. Great idea and a great video. One suggestion for you, I use Zip-loc freezer bags with a 1/4" hole punched in the top section (with a regular paper hole punch) to hang my zip-loc bags on hooks, that way they are easy to take off the wall, open & close using the zipper closure and then using the punched hole hang the bag back on the hook.

23:31 - those are called 'Lineman's Pliers'. They probably had insulation (the older-style translucent red type that feels like hard polyurethane or bakelite) when they were manufactured, but it only holds up for so many decades and then slips off.

I think screws alone work as well on plywood painted white. Then outline each tool with pencil to know where it goes and when it is missing. Add little “shelves” with drilled holes for screwdrivers etc.
This reminds me so much of my father and how he organized his tools, I still have several of his tool cabinets and shelves employing so many of these techniques. I see some new ones I'll need to incorporate. I just love this, thank you so much for sharing this!

This is the best example of using what you have laying about and making it work for you. I haven't built a shop for myself yet. I have been collecting ideas for organization and storage because like all workers in the shop, I hate not being able to quickly find the right tool!

Great timing for me for this video. I've been building a house and shop for almost three years and my tools are chaos. I also have a ton of wire scraps as I've been doing most of my own electric. This is such a great way to organize your shop when you don't have a bunch of fancy woodworking tools. Some of the videos need a great deal of skill and time and special equipment only found in a dedicated woodworking shop.
In high school shop all the tools had a painted outline on the wall clearly indicating where the tool belongs when done using it. I thought it was silly at the time but now know how critical it is for everyone to know where things are and where they go back to.
Scrap wire is indispensable around the farm and cuts down on the use of zip ties which have their place but usually can not be reused. If you use "flush cut" cutters you wont get cut by the wire as easily.
I like seeing someone else using "Through the roof". Its the best and does not get hard in the tube very quickly. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve done the French cleat for a few years and for the most part, was a labor intensive pain-in-the-neck. I love speed and versatility of this!
Inspired? Inspired? Inspired to say the least!! This is the greatest tool organization and mounting/ storing tutorial by far. Fantastic ideas too numerous to list. But ALL important, even vital.
I've watched this twice now, and still learning more tricks to organize my space. I really struggle with finding my tools when I need them, and this is brilliant! and cheap!

I seem to be a naturally unorganized person and have been looking for good ideas for shop organization for a long time but it seems to me that every video/example of an organization method that I come across involves an expensive proprietary system or requires spending an inordinate amount of time working up custom jigs, tool-holding cradles and specialty construction. Your approach uses simple materials, plain common sense and is broadly applicable to almost every hand tool you can imagine, although with the price of copper these days I might use a different wire. I believe that the ideas you displayed in this video will suite my needs perfectly and can't wait to implement them in my own space. Thank you for sharing this fantastic and simple method with us all!
Wire clothes hangers are almost always free -- and who doesn't already have too many! Most are stiffer than 12 gauge copper wire, so they will hold their shape under greater stress.

I did the same thing years ago but I use finish nails of varying lengths. Seems faster than custom making hangers. I also made custom screw driver holders that are nothing more than a small shelf with holes drilled in it.

This looks great and I have something similar for a lot of my tools but it does leave them exposed to the atmosphere and consequential corrosion. I keep all my socket/spanner/screwdrivers etc in a number of large metal roller cabinets/drawers with silica bags on each level inside. This minimises metal tools the exposure to moisture in the air. Good tools will last over your lifetime so protecting them requires a bit of thought.
a dehumidifier in the summer and a space heater in the winter works for me

Good Stuff! A lot of really good ideas there. In my shop, instead of using EMT, I use the plastic version, heat the end with a heat gun, then push into a ball peen hammer to create a funnel top. To capture those little straws on lube tins, strap a drinking straw to the side of it with good tape.
I don't use drinking straws. I use coffee stirrers that are just a bit larger than the red lube straws I was always losing

I recently retired, built a house, moved across the state and I have what is left of my General Contractors life in my 17 foot trailer and part of my garage. Needless to say, every time I need a tool I can't find it so I have to borrow one or buy a cheap version to finish the job. I have been trying to come up with an idea to have my tools accessible and your ideas are perfect. I love it. Thank you.

This is the most effective solution to garage wall storage i have yet seen - and also the most cost effective. Well done and thanks for sharing!
This is an interesting solution. I repurpose nails from pallets that I disassemble, the healthy and straight-ish ones. I nail them at an angle and according to each tool's shape and they do this job perfectly well, they're quite solid.

Regarding the magnets (with the holes in them) you could omit the hooks and just screw them into the wall with a spacer. The spacer is key as you pointed out so that you get the proper magnet surface area.
This is a great idea. I’m definitely going to employ this in my shop. Currently I hang most of my tools with 1/4” dowel glued into the plywood which works great for most things and I can flush cut them off if I change placement. Thanks for the video!

On a side note, I have a number of my grandfather’s hand tools from the 1940s-70s (he had a side business working on televisions in his basement) that I have on my wall along with my assortment. It’s cool to readily see those and on occasion use them as I’m in my workbench area.

I don’t have a wide wall like that, but I have a board on 2 walls with 2” wire nails or screws or custom Romex hooks that organize my tools. My shop is in my basement with a lower ceiling so I have the luxury of overhead storage in the ceiling joist spaces. I don’t think my family understands the joy and completeness that I get out of it 😉

Brilliant my shop teacher in high school used blocks of wood and screws on osb . Very nice and inexpensive way. True craftsmanship.
He then outline the tool with contract paint or marker .
I love the labeling where stuff was. This can be useful for really any tool wall system to save you countless time putting tools back after you've transferred them to a tool tote. Great stuff!
This is brilliant, and like most good ideas, it is simple. I’ve tried, shelves, peg board with hooks and all sorts but this is so much more versatile and easy to change. As I’m just moving my workshop I’ll give this a go if I can find the right gauge copper wire in the UK. Cheers for sharing. Andy UK

Much easier to navigate than having a drawer full of tools, I just did something like this with my power tools and chargers. 23:32 Those are 10 inch linesman's pliers. A must have tool if you are working as an electrician. The jaws are just the right size to twist wire together prior to installing the wire nut.
You can buy the insulating handles for the linemans pliers from Klien and probably other places. You put them in hot water till pliable then they will slide right on. Once they cool, they won't come off the tool.
I just discovered your channel through the magic of CZcams's algorithm that caters to my interests. When I saw those Picquic screwdrivers, my first thought was: "Ha, this guy must be Canadian!" :) We all use them up here, they're sold everywhere. They're not that well known in the US, but social media and CZcams videos like yours help spread the word around. I've seen a few videos from Americans raving about them. When I need to use screwdrivers for a particular job, I tend to prefer dedicated high quality screwdrivers; I have a nice Wera set. But when space is at a premium, there's no better multi-bit screwdriver than the Picquic. There's one in my miscellaneous kitchen drawer, car, a stubby in my daypack when I'm out and about, and in any portable toolbox.

Super 8 plus is my favorite as well. I’ve given them as gifts many times too. Great video. I’m still attached to various wooden holders but using other materials is great. Rubber bike tubes cut up and PVC tubes. I love that you’re lighting is strong too.

Excellent! My only suggestion for improvement would be to remake the nut-driver rack and fold the copper wire over the magnets so they can't come away when you lift down a tool.

Seems like you are using up a lot of wall space. The shelves help to “stack” things so more tools fit in less wall space. In my shop I use the French cleat system because things seem to change as my abilities and projects evolve.
Finally a solution that can be completed for free and without taking so much time. Thanks

Ton of GREAT ideas here. Low cost in both time and money. Durable setup that won't rust away. A few minor improvement suggestions.
1. If you need thicker wire anywhere, put two (or three) pieces of wire into a drill chuck, grab the opposite ends with a vice or locking pliers, hold it taut and twist the wire together with the drill to form a multi-strand wire. On top of being sturdier & thicker for heavier tools, twisted/braided wire can sustain far more bending before it work hardens and breaks so it is much better for wire that is regularly bent back and forth.
2. Add wire retainer, similar to the chisel setup, to prevent those cups from falling off that shelf when it inevitably gets bumped & destabilized. Few things more annoying than a cup full of loose parts scattered across the floor.
